I did post in Grants tribute thread. This is my first registered. Anyway, I was out with some friends recently and I mentioned I was listening to the Go-Betweens a lot lately. My friend mentioned that her 7yr old son said to her recently that he really likes the GBS. He had found an old tape with 16LL and LBATBDE on it. I thought "cool". She did too,but also thought that lyrically GB's stuff is quiet sad and dark and didn't want her son to become manic. So she challenged me to name 5 happy GB's songs. I guess "Lee Remick" and "Cattle And Cane" aren't sad songs(imho). Any thoughts. |

"Right Here" seems to my ears and psyche somewhat upbeat. "Love Goes On!", too, though it's plain that even the happiest GBs have a wistful element... Oh, and welcome, Eddie. |

She should just face it, the kid's a natural aesthete. |

Welcome, Eddie. Wow, that's a smart kid. Maybe he ought to start posting here...we could use an influx of youthful energy. Several of Grant's songs on 16LL are pretty happy, or at least they're about keeping the darkness at bay ("Devil's Eye," "Quiet Heart," "Love Goes On!"). Others that come to mind: "Surfing Magazines," "Magic in Here," "German Farmhouse," "Make Her Day," "This Night's for You, etc. |

How nice to see you on the board, Eddie! Not long ago I was very new to the Go-Betweens. FORW and Oceans Apart leave one with the happiest impressions by far - gotta love that Grant McLennan smile. The young lad has taste! I wouldn't worry too much about 'mania' or 'depression' - if anything the Go-B's are 'realist' and intelligent. Again, nice to read something from you! |

I'm new to this board myself, I think this is only number three for me, four if I count my goodbye to Grant. 'Spring Rain' is a happy song with a just-be-yourself message (as I understand it), which I imagine would be nice to hear for a unique kid growing up like I'm sure many of us were. |

Thanks for the welcome and the suggestions all. I agree with some of the suggestions although I find that even the sunny upbeat sounding tunes have a dark lyric. Regarding the young boy, he really is a smart one. Thanks everybody. |

Though the music doesn't completely reflect it, the lyrics to "Mountains Near Dellray" are quite positive. All about making wishes and getting them and not struggling. |
