O soccer loving board people, I think I know even less about your "football" than I do about the royal family... Should we be excited about Beckham coming to play here in L.A.? They're sure paying him enough. |

Well, he'd probably be bringing the wifey (Posh Spice), if that's worth anything to you... |

Do you ever get the feeling everyone else has evacuated the message board and no one told us, LK? |

Don't get too excited LK. If she turns sideways there is every chance that you won't see her. |

Kurt, yup I think they all went to My Space... Michelle, too right. I was mainly overreacting to get a laugh outta Kurt. But honestly, despite obviously being a pretty woman, she seems way too plastic. And yeah too thin. It reminds me of Tom Wolfe's expression for starved, skeletal socialites: x-rays. |

It worked, LK. As long as we have the playground pretty much to ourselves (thanks for joining us, Michelle), we have to laugh at one other's jokes. Besides, you're more of a Sporty Spice guy, I can tell. Although I think she's going by "Chubby Spice" now. Not that talk about the Spice Girls has any merit, but I read that they're reforming (or maybe it's already happened) for a Princess Diana tribute concert. The news item I read referred to them as a "supergroup." Huh? Maybe Stephen Stills has joined them ("Fat Bald Cokehead Spice"). |

LK -I think a phrase that you might be familiar with sums this up. He has "jumped the shark" as far as cutting it at the top level of the game, hence he is dropping down a level. |

Interesting, Kev. Boy, were those people, the LA Galaxy, or whatever they're called, sold a bill of goods. And, I guess Beckham is laughing all the way to the bank...Seems fundamentally misguided. I could be wrong, but I just don't think soccer's ever going to catch on here, in the same way. |

Beckham has taken the easy option. He's basically opted out of fighting for his place in the England squad. Whether he's just not good enough is another matter. As for the pig-slut of a wife of his, I detest her more than the Royal Family. Is there anything worse than a social climbing no-talent with ideas above anyone's station, a nouveau riche tasteless trollop. |

LK- If soccer didnt catch on after the USA hosted the 1994 World Cup its not going to now just because one reasonably talented footballer moves to LA. If Beckham was bald and ugly he wouldnt be anything like the "superstar" he is, I reckon he is talented, but a guy like Paul Scholes is a far better footballer and guess what, he is just an ordinary guy with red hair - so no "celebrity" for him. Jerry - Posh wears the trousers in that relationship, this move is just as much for her benefit if you ask me. |

I suppose his presence will brighten up the Mexican waves in the stadium, a bit like Kevin keegan did 30 years ago when he went to the States to play, except I think it was the Coverdale style curly perm the people were slavering over!!! (NOT HIS LOOKS!) I may be wrong tho!... |

Could we send Barry Bonds? First busted for steroids, now for speed...he could become Britain's most pumped-up cricket star. |

Beckham's been a good footballer, and perhaps the lesser pace of the US game will help him for a couple of years. I don't know if Beckham will receive the media he gets over here. As far as I'm concerned they're not quite far enough away for me. Cheers Jon |

I remember back years ago when we Detroiters had the Express football team of the NASL. The star player was Trevor Francis. He was probably the greatest English footballer during that mid-lates 70's period. |

Michael, you weren't fortunate enough to see Gerry Francis & Stan Bowles in their prime. Is this the start of a renaissance like that period of the '70's when all the old timers postponed their retirement for the US Dollar. The only good that came from that was the plastic pitch at Loftus Road. |

Jerry Talking about plastic pitches, what about the one at Oldham. If the Goalkeeper kicked it and it bounced it would be in Rochdale by the time you caught up with it! I was never much of a fan of plastic pitches, supporting Liverpool we always seemed to struggle on them. Especially at Luton when they banned away fans. Oh the memories..... Cheers Jon |

The plastic pitch did help Rangers in the short term. Promotion, FA cup final & European qualification. But then we had to play UEFA cup home games at Arsenal. Everton didn't like the plastic in their mid '80's peak either. |

Jerry, love your description of Mrs Beckham. It's funny because it's true. Spence, I'm pretty sure Kevin Keegan never played in America. He left Liverpool to play in Germany and I cried that day as Liverpool FC was my life at that age (10, I think). LA Galaxy will sell a lot of replica jerseys with Beckham's name and number on it. Hard to see them getting full value for their investment though. His best days are long gone; though the opposition will not be as difficult in the US as in Spain. Kevin is exactly right that his presentable looks are the key to his continued success. His relentless media whoring has also kept him in the public eye. As has his wife's equally relentless media whoring. Her friendship with Mrs Cruise should bring out the wacko Scientologist fan base too. () |

Padraig, aye, he went to Hamburg, was it Best who did USA? Remember when Pele and others went over there to kick start soccer in the US? I too was a massive LFC fan, from the age of 8-13, the glory days too! I used to write to John Smith he was the chairman, and he used to send me all tyhese signed pics of Bob Paisley and Kenny and the boys! I was mad for em. They were so exciting, truly unstoppable. In an age too where football wasnt just about 11 overpaid, (questoionable talent) egocentrics fallng around the football pitch. |

Spence, have you read 'Margrave of the Marshes'? Peel describes going to see his first Liverpool game (1950s) and his favourite player from the team (can't remember who) gets on the same bus, on his way to the ground too. Wonder when Beckham last used public transport? But it makes the point that until the late 60s (?) players were paid peanuts... |
