Hello All, I'm brand new to this message board thing, but have been a longtime fan since a friend turned me on to "Before Hollywood" way back in 1984. I just wanted to give a heads up for an upcoming show that my band is doing on friday, February 2nd at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis. It will be a tribute to Grant Mclennan and the Go-Betweens. We only get 30 minutes to perform, so it was tough whittling it down to 8 songs (3 grant solo tunes and 5 go-betweens). I live in Minneapolis/St.Paul Minnesota in the US, and it's great to see that there's such a loving worldwide fan base for a band that has always remained somewhat obscure. I had the great pleasure of meeting Grant briefly during his solo tour with Paul Kelly in the early or mid-90's (I think it was the Horsebreaker Star tour possibly?) He seemed like totally a great unpretentious guy. I also was delighted to catch the re-united go-betweens acoustic duo prior to their "comeback" album Friends of Rachel Worth. Sorry about the length of this post, it's not intended to be "all about me", just wanted to share my enthusiasm. As I've been working on some of these tunes, my 5-year old daughter has been getting into them and sometimes sings along.(They're not ALL downers!) Oh well, thanks for letting me participate and I'll let you know how the show goes. By the way, does anyone know exactly the words to Robert's spoken part on Cattle and Cane? I know I should post that on the Lyrics board, sorry! Bye for now. Terry |

Hey, Terry, MNPLS is a bit of a drive from Chicago, so I'll just wish you good luck Feb. 2. Hope your band converts some folks to the cause! What tracks are you doing, exactly? |

I'm always up for attempting to interpret lyrics. I am sure that the spoken content would have been changed over the years but I think the original may be something like: I recall a saying* (*not sure with that one) A reply A plan we once had From time down to mine That time was bad So I knew where I was Alone but so at home. |

Did I read this (possibly in the Nichols book), or did I dream, that Forster originally set out to sing it, but couldn't quite get the meter right. So, he opted to speak it, instead. And what a great choice that was...very evocative... Excellent decipherin', Michelle! |

Hey, thanks for the replys! My interpretation was almost identical, Michelle, except I came up with "I recall the same..." The songs we're doing are: Lighting Fires Easy Come Easy Go The Clock Right Here Bachelor Kisses Malibu 69 Was there anything I could do? Cattle and Cane I started out with about 20 song titles and had to eliminate many favorites. So many good ones! Hopefully we'll do it again sometime. Thanks all, terry |

Nice setlist, Terry, and welcome to the board. If you have any pics, audio clips, or a website for your band, we'd be interested in checking them out. Good luck with the show! |

Our set is scheduled to start at 10:45. Things should run fairly close to on time. It's one of these annual "cover song contests" that I've taken part in in the past few years. I hate to think of it as a contest, really it's a chance for local musicians to have some fun. I have no idea what the other bands are doing, there'll be like 4 or 5 other acts. It should be fun, but I'm a bit apprehensive after our first rehearsal -- cattle and cane was a little rough on our bassist and drummer! Elizabeth, I hope you can try to make it, or any other members within driving distance of the Twin Cities. And while I'm mentioning this, I'm still actually looking for a female vocalist who can perform Bachelor Kisses, Lighting Fires and Right Here! Anybody out there? I Intend to record the show and if it's any good I'll let you know and post it etc. cheers, terry |

More power to you Terry. Maybe somebody at the show will go "who is this person whose songs they're doing? they sound great." Welcome to the board. |

Regarding Robert's words on Cattle & Cane: I also thought the first line was "I recall the same" and the rest as Michelle heard it. Good luck with the show Terry. |

LK, David Nichols' book says the following about Robert's part: Forster had tried singing his small piece at the end of "Cattle and Cane" but couldn't make it work and so spoke it. |

Hello again, just wanted to say that our set went pretty good I think. My friend recorded it, but his computer crashed! I did see some other mics there, so I think it might be documented, I'm waiting to hear back from somebody. If I get anything decent sounding, I'll let you know and try to post it somewhere. For the record, we dropped Lighting Fires in favor of This Nights For You. We had a pretty good turn out and it went over quite well I think. Unfortunately I flubbed a few lines and there was a few bad notes, but all around the performance had a good energy to it. bye for now, terry |

Terry, Hope it was captured. Look forward to hearing it. Also, please send me the chords to those to songs when you have a chance. I am working up three songs that we've been arranging as well. |

Hey Matthias, turns out the set was indeed recorded, so I'll be getting a copy sometime. There's even a lo-grade video apparently. No prob about sending you the chords, just those two or the others? I've posted Lighting Fires in the tab section of the message board... |

Dear Terry - That is wonderful news! In better circumstances I would have taken a cab to First Avenue and stayed up late to see you play, and thought of you performing just the same. I hope some people did brave the cold and that they liked what they heard. |

Odd coincidence- I listened to a lot of Go-B's last night and also took a first listen to a recording of a Grant tribute show I played back in June. It was in San Francisco. Then today I visit this board for the first time in a while and found this thread at the top! For those interested, our set was this: 1. Two Steps, Step Out 2. Cattle & Cane 3. That Way 4. Bachelor Kisses 5. Unkind and Unwise 6. Apology Accepted 7. Right Here 8. Bye Bye Pride 9. Love Goes On 10. Quiet Heart 11. Streets Of Your Town 12. Easy Come, Easy Go 13. The Clock 14. Going Blind 15. Finding You It's so great to hear about people doing Grant McLennan/Go-Betweens tribute shows. Sean |
