Interesting article, Jerry--thanks. Some of the recording experts on the board said similar things during the discussion about OA a couple of years ago. I guess this is why it's not just long running time that makes it so difficult to sit through most full-length CDs these days. |

Very interesting, especially about the on-line petition to re-master Californication. I want to start a new petition - Remaster the song so it doesn't plain suck - in other words, release a blank disc. |

Thanks for the article! This is clearly nothing new. This is *exactly* what I was complaining about in the epic thread on OA's LOUD, shitty, distorted quality. Over-compressed and cranked up volume at the mastering stage, resulting in LOUD, buzzing, headache-enducing sound. That, of course, was two years ago. People in the recording field have been complaining about this for quite some time. I'm glad this is finally being addressed and discussed in media that's not relegated to the elite world of record producers. I'd like to see some actual scientific studies done to show the brain fatigue and nausea brought on by LOUD mastering. That could strengthen the argument in favor of more natural and dynamic volume levels. |

Remaster "Californiacation"? How 'bout make the Peppers start the heck over with a whole new bunch of (decent) songs and - let's really make a wish here - a whole new band lineup! That'd fix the problem. Seriously, though, the article's pretty interesting. I most notice the "loudification" of new music when my iPod's hooked into my stereo and, in shuffle mode, the recent stuff abuts music from older CDs. Geez! It's like being on an aural tilt-a-whirl. It's actually become kind of a problem. You have to set the stereo volume for the loudest tracks so the "normal" ones end up getting the shaft. If I have people over and don't want to stand around adjusting the volume constantly some quieter tunes sound like nothing's playing at all. And they claim Oasis started this whole thing? Figures. |

The Artics album is mega loud, also I think a certain Dave Fridmann subscribes to this method. A listen to albums by Low, Flaming Lips, Sleater Kinney, in fact anybody the guy records, bears this out. |

about bloody time. especially while more and more of us poor suckers keep forking out money for deluxe ladeedah versions which sound terribly depleted. maybe we could start a petition to have californication deleted entirely? either that or i might have to move to california, take an overdose and inspire another batch of their purile efforts. |

I've never heard the Californication album but, um, I like the song itself... I'll get my coat. |

It's okay, I'm sure all of us have our dirty little musical secrets. I bought the first Thrills album for instance!! I feel much better now I've shared my shame. First step to recovery and all that... |

Don't get me wrong, I genuinely did like their first album. Problem is, I live in Ireland, where they were played TO DEATH on the radio, and I just got so sick of them. Now, when I hear them, I come out in a rash, very similar to the one I get when I hear James Blunt... |

Count me in for liking The Thrills too. I was playing the Cake Sale CD (Irish charity comp) this afternoon - my sister gave it to me at Christmas but this was my first time playing it - and heard a voice I recognised but couldn't quite place. I checked the credits and it the guy from The Thrills. It's been too long since I've played that first album obviously. Must play both their albums again soon. HAL do the posh Dublin Beach Boys thing even better than The Thrills though. |

Not living in Ireland I have not been subjected to the saturation problem, Catherine. There are a lot of records I can't listen to for the same reason. No one knows who the Thrills are here in Los Angeles. I saw them when they opened for the Pixies. The audience just blah-blah-blahed right through their set which I enjoyed far more than the headliners. A year or so before, I could have seen them in a tiny club down at the end of my street if I'd been paying more attention to my surroundings. |

Some tracks on the new White Stripes album suffer from this over loud distortion bollocks. In particular Icky Thump and Ice Cream Soda. |
