In the interest of overseas sharing, here's a great article on my favorite political commentator on cable news here, Keith Olbermann, who's sort of like a cross between the crazy guy from Network and Edward R. Murrow, from whom he takes his sign-off phrase, in tribute ("Good night, and good luck"). What separates Keith from the rest of the pack is that he is completely partisan and unabashed about taking sides. Also included in the article are links to some of KO's best "special commentaries", wherein Keith really lets loose with the acid rhetoric and (righteous) moral outrage about stuff going on here. Liberals and right-thinking people across the land light up cigarettes and bathe in the afterglow after these satisfying and cathartic rants...Basically, Keith is mad as hell and he's not going to take it anymore, and for that, he seems downright heroic. http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/sto ry/13559914/the_most_honest_man_in_news |

Nice, LK. I wish I got to see KO more often; I'm cable-less over here so I only see him when he makes YouTube or HuffPo. Glad to hear he's doing well. The "left-wing media" the wingnuts complain about hasn't been in evidence much these recent years. |

LK, I have been hooked on Countdown with Keith Olbermann for 6 months or so. I love the way he presents facts that shoot holes in the retoric that spews forth from Bush & Company and Fox! His Thursday night comments are out of this world cool! He's more intense then the clips of Murrow i've seen. So your right when you add the crazy Howard Biel character element to describe Olbermann. George Clooney's movie of Murrow, "Good Night, Good Luck" is really well done and a great period piece with some thinly veiled shots that certainly apply to Bush and Company, or Bushco for short. |

I'm addicted, too, Michael. Many is the day where I'm breaking my ass speeding, flaunting traffic laws, etc, to get home for 5:00 to watch it. Rob, how can a good taste-havin', discerning dude such as yourself not have cable? You're missing all those great, addictive shows - not just Countdown, but Rome, Sopranos, Deadwood, etc...Not to mention Stewart and Colbert... |

I know, I know, I catch hell about it all the time. But you know, I just don't like TV. I'll watch the Bulls play, and I used to get my Stewart and Colbert fix from YouTube (damn you, Comedy Central!) but I try to avoid the Boob Tube by and large and cable makes that very hard. With broadcast TV, I'm never tempted to watch because there's never anything on. Except "Antiques Roadshow." For some reason I find that fascinating. |

And then, LK, there are those of us who don't have cable because we like our TV (to quote Letterman) "free, as God intended it!" Seriously, amazing how far KO has come, isn't it? From being one of those glib ESPN talking heads to one of the country's sharpist, bravest voices of political common sense. Quite unlike that Craig Kilborn guy. Whatever happened to him? Anyone even remember him? (The Daily Host show before Jon Stewart, if you need a hint.) |

You remind me, Herr Stephan, of Mojo Nixon's great song about stealing cable. I forget the name of it, but his justification is basically, "why should I pay? They just be suckin that stuff outta the sky!". KO has really arrived - good on him...I remember, and maybe this was just how I perceived it, but when Kilborn got the job hosting the Late Show (the one hosted by Ferguson now), it seemed like Stewart had inherited the booby prize, not scoring that gig, but landing the Daily Show, instead. If that's the case, he sure rode that booby prize to some pretty unparalled fame and success. I guess that he has talent, combined with some basic warmth, instead of just jerky snarkiness, like that nobody Kilborn, has something to do with it... And Rob, THAT explains how you're able to read all them books...you waste time on empty intellectual pursuits instead of scoring all that enriching boob tube time...No wonder I'm not able to make it all the way through TV Guide and People anymore... |

I didn't want to bring up the money angle for fear of being branded cheap, Kurt, but it's true: I have a problem paying for television that still forces me to sit through advertising. Craig Kilborn? Isn't he stranded on has-been island with Connie Chung and Arsenio Hall? |

See, I have no problem being branded "cheap," Rob. 'Cuz it's true! Also, I am aware the word is spelled "sharpest." Argh, re-reading one's posts is humbling. |

Kilborn's a prime example of the rule: those who live by the snark shall die by the snark. And he wasn't even any good at it...he just made you want to punch him really hard in the face. |

You know how the Onion has those little parodies of sidebars, you know, those "Statistics That Shape Our Lives" kind of things? A couple of years ago they had one called something like "People Most In Need of Cock Punching"...Kilborn should've been on that list, if he, in fact, wasn't... |
