Anyone catch the induction ceremonies? R.E.M. and Patti Smith were on fire. It was great seeing Bill Berry back on drums with R.E.M., and I was transported back to the good old days when they were the best band in the world. Patti was an inspiration and gave me hope that the people can rise up and defeat ignorance, hate and war and that the power to do this is within us all. |

Patti performed "Because The Night" and "Rock N Roll Nigger"! She had her full band with Lenny as well as with her longtime drummer Jay Dee Daugherty. She gave a real nice touching speech, mentioning Fred numerous times. And why the f**k The Stooges aren't in the RARHOF is beyond any reason. They were twice the band that the Sex Pistols were. Speaking of The Stooges and Patti's dear departed husband Fred "Sonic" Smith: Lenny, Patti and R.E.M. performed The Stooges "I Wanna Be Your Dog" at the HOF ceremony. It's on YouTube. I would post the link, but it's blocked here at work. |

What did R.E.M. play? I wish they'd make their next album with Berry back in the fold. Leaving the touring to a guest drummer, but they need his creative input in the studio. |

Kurt, A great version of Gardening At Night! Also Begin the Begin, Stipe's voice a little on the froggy side. The third song was a nice version of Man On The Moon with Eddie Vedder and Scott McCaughey. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rl5TdBcAU ts http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4c098UVW fE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tt6FHFOeQ 58 |

Gardening at Night brought me out in goosebumps. They need to kidnap Berry and not release him till they have written and recorded an album. Otherwise break up. |

Kevin, I agree 100%. It's really not R.E.M. without Bill, and that's Bill as in Berry not Rieflin. Gardening at Night, Stumble, Wolves; Lower and the other songs on Chronic Town turned my whole perception of rock around in July of 1983. They became my favorite band overnight and Murmur only solidified it. |

Thanks for the YouTube links, Michael. Almost brought a tear to the eye, remembering the days when I loved them without qualification. With Berry on drums and with them playing a closed, non-stadium venue, they can still deliver (but geez, Stipe, can't you sing without all the arm and hand gestures?). I couldn't agree with Kevin more about making the next record with Berry, or no record at all. |

Watching "Gardening at Night" reminds me of a time long ago when I thought REM might be incapable of writing a bad song. They made (and in this clip, make) it look so easy. The fact they can even remember how to play "Gardening..." makes me wonder how albums like "Reveal" or "Around the Sun" ever got recorded. A suggestion: If they decide to take Berry hostage, maybe they should take copies of "Chronic Town" and "Murmur" along, too. |

Just the fact that they picked "Gardening at Night" and "Begin the Beguine," which are two of my faves but are hardly among their conventional-wisdom greatest hits, makes me think somewhere down deep, they still know what their great stuff is. "Man on the Moon" was the only obvious crowd-pleaser. I mean, they could have gotten away with playing "Everybody Hurts" and "Losing My Religion," which would thrill the respectable old farts in the RARHOF audience but not have done much for us long-time fans. |
