Well, LK, looks like I'm coming back April 22-27... Maybe we can grab a brew or 4 at the Roadhouse and sing praises to GM after all. You still in the area?

I plan on getting out a bit more this time around. Hoping to take the rental car down the coast or should I go up the coast? Ask suggestions out there. Top ten places to see around Long Beach?

Although I'm still wounded from your standing me up last time, absolutely. Perhaps we should draft Randy - he's in the area, too, if he's up for a beer.

Most of my suggestions would still revolve around the coast and PCH. Just find your way to the good old Coast Highway and head up or down. And, to give a little shout out to the beauty of OC, there are some stunningly beautimous coastal vistas if you head south, with one charming beach town after another...

Or, if you have an extra $50, take the ferry to Catalina Island for the day. Long Beach is one of the major points of departure for it...

The title of this thread has caused two songs to become lodged in my head today, one bleeding into the other: "Reasons to Be Cheerful, Part 3" and "Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead."

Well, yo' ass could well get itse'f killed in Long Beach, so the appropriate song might be be "Things to Do in Long Beach When You Daid"...not to scare Matthias, but there are some dodgy areas...

I'm crazy about Ian Dury, btw...I was listening to a Stiff Records box set and felt like cheering when "Razzle In My Pocket" came on...

Who knows how it'd be in real life, but in his music Ian comes off as the kinda chap you'd like to hang out with...warm, friendly and crazy as hell (in the best possible way).

It seems I've read that Dury was a difficult person, kind of testy even with his mates, but a loyal friend. Maybe not for the thin-skinned, though. Maybe like a more caustic Joe Strummer, who most people say was a great guy to have drinks with, even if he didn't know you from Adam.

I didn't realize that...his music and musical persona have/had such a great, positive energy, amidst all the wise-assness...

I should find a good comp by him - I just have odds and sods on various collections, like "Wake Up and Make Love to Me" and "Billericay Dickie"..

I think I'd start off with his first CD, LK, "New Boots and Panties!!!" It's as good as any of the comps. I also own "Juke Box Dury," which is a comp and is excellent.

Yeah, if you get "New Boots and Panties," you probably have about 75% of what belongs on a Dury best-of anyway. It did kind of tower over the albums that followed, though of course he did more good work for a long time.

Cool. I'll have to get 'em both, but start out with "New Boots and Panties!!!". Worth having just for the title - after all, what else is there in life?

I don't think "Jukebox Dury" is around any more...I used to own it on vinyl, but that's long gone. Of the three comps that Amazon offers, "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll" has by far the best to offer...all the songs from "Jukebox" plus more. "Reasons to be Cheerful" is two discs...perhaps more than you want/need, but packed with good stuff too.

And not to stress it unduly, but I really would get one of the comps...by my count there's at least eight indispensable songs that aren't on "New Boots."

So to get this thread back on track...

LK, Randy, perhaps we could pick a day to meet up at the Roadhouse. How about 4/24?

Also, anything else I should see in SOCAL. Got car. Will travel. LK, is Catalina worth an afternoon?

Spence, my vote is we meet at Ric's in Brisbane for our GoBees piss up.

I can do 4-24 Matthias. I cannot do the weekend immediately before that.

I don't know if piss ups are legal in the states, Matthias, but I'm game for one on 4/24, at the "Roadhouse" (I'm still fuzzy on what place you're talking about - you mean the Yard House, right?)....

Because it's an hour or so each way and $50-60 bucks for the ferry ride, Matthias, I would probably say Catalina was not a viable proposition for an afternoon. I'd probably want to stay at least a whole day if I were you. When I've gone, in fact, I've always stayed over. That said, it's really gorgeous. If you've seen the movie Chinatown, then you've seen it, btw.

Kevin, Randy, all right so The YARD House it is Tuesday, April 24th.

What time shall we begin? There are 250 draft beers there. That's 83 a piece. So we better get crackin'.

http://www.shorelinevillage.com/dYardHou se01.html

My presentation will end at 5:15. Figure 15 minutes of polite Q&A. 15 minutes to walk there. I could be there at 5:45 pm. Beer in hand by 6pm!

Now we just need some guitars and we could busk some Go-Bee tunes!
