From the mouth of Russell Kilbey last night at the Church "Space-rock" thing at the Basement in Sydney....NEW GRANT TRIBUTE ALBUM. Steve Kilbey has, apparently, just finished recording "The Wrong Road", which he often sang a verse or more to when Jack Frost used to play. Jarvis Cocker was also named as a contributer to the album. Russel could provide no more details unfortuneately. |

Probably Bono will knock out Quiet Heart and we wont be able to listen to that again.Like the idea of Jarvis doing one, it may be all the usual suspects though. |

I'm hoping, as Andreas suggested a couple of months ago, that Neil Finn will get in before Bono and do Quiet Heart. |

Are we cynical or what?? I would like to see Robert "cover"/rework some of Grant's songs and do some of the ones they'd been working on |

I don't think it would be a bad idea to see 'Too Much of One Thing', the "ballad of the Go-Betweens" that was supposed to have been about Grant McLennan, done with lyrics reworked if necessary, by RF and Steve Kilbey. The people who deserve to be on that tribute album are those that really loved and supported Grant when he was alive and singing. What about Belle and Sebastian, incidentally? |

"The people who deserve to be on that tribute album are those that really loved and supported Grant when he was alive and singing" This is Dave from Rare Victory...I just stopped by and saw this thread. Elizabeth - that is exactly what we are aiming for with this tribute. We're inviting bands that shared a connection with Grant, and almost feel compelled to create an interpretation of his music. The results have been wonderful. By the way, Belle and Sebastian indicated back in September they wanted to participate, even had a song recorded already for the compilation. Yet, for whatever reason, they've been AWOL the past two months and have not returned our emails. |

I hope the project lives up to everyone's expectations, a real tribute... too many of these albums are something less than that. Belle & Sebastian are a solid choice, but I'm curious who else might be participating. At least some of the members of R.E.M. were big fans and The Go-Betweens did tour with them on at least one occasion in Australia. I'm listening to SHACK's 'The Corner of Miles and Gil' at the moment and they could do justice to a Grant song... not sure they qualify as being fans. Lloyd Cole should certainly participate. I always knew a Go-Betweens reunion would be in the works when Robert & Grant toured with him in support of their respective solo debuts. Stephen Duffy & Lilac Time maybe... he has a compatible, pastoral pop approach. I'd enjoy hearing Tim Keegan do one of Grant's songs too. Tim Keegan & Departure Lounge opened for Robert & Grant at Fez here in NYC on R&G's acoustic duo tour in 1999. Grant said some very complementary things about them from the stage and encouraged the audience to pick up their CD at the merchandise table... "very worthwhile" he said (I took his advice and he was right). Younger Australian bands like The Sleepy Jackson & Augie March... I'm sure there are others. Are the key players in NZ's Mutton Birds still active? What was the relationship like between The Go-Betweens and Kiwi rockers such as The Clean/David Kilgour? How about Dean & Britta? They'd do a nice job with just about anything they touched. Luna were labelmates with the G-B's on Jetset Records, the label Robert Vickers was involved with here in NYC. Maybe Dean could cajole Tom Verlaine to participate in the session... that would tickle Grant's spirit. Was there any mutual admiration between Tim Rogers/YOU AM I and the G-B's? It's hard for me to understand how that band is perceived downunder. Lisa Miller has certainly demonstrated a way with "cover" versions. Syd Straw worked with Grant on 'Horsebreaker Star' so she'd be a natural choice. Yo La Tengo? (another touring partner) Paul Westerberg? I hear Grant's songs being performed by 80's indies... I hope that mold can be stretched a bit. Well, good luck to all those involved. |

I second Randy's sentiment, and would toss in the names Edwyn Collins, Tracey Thorn, Roddy Frame, and even the ex members of Sleater-Kinney (Carrie Brownstein was a huge fan) as people I'd like to hear on the project. I realize several of you are vomiting at the thought of any S-K involvement, but trust me, they didn't scream and wail all the time. And they used to sing karaoke with Grant, so I'm sure they'd have his cosmic blessing. |

Well, certainly I can agree with Guy that living up to expectations is a nearly impossible task when it comes to a project involving the go-betweens. and for that reason I was very very reluctant to even attempt a tribute comp in the first place. how does one improve on the originals? Grant's passing hit us hard and the whole idea seemed out of place, at first, too soon and a tad cliche. Then after a few weeks of abject mourning (and serious drinking) we realized the obvious: sooner or later, somebody was going to do it. Go-Betweens music and history has been such a huge part of our lives for so long, maybe just maybe we're qualified in some sense to actually do this, and do it for the "right" reasons. Just as we're sure almost anybody on this board can understand, this is something that deserves to be treated reverentially; Grant and Robert (Lindy and Vickers, and Amanda for that matter) deserve at least that much. Despite the odds of it succeeding on anything more than an artistic level (this kind of project is a hell of a tough sell according to the distros) it needs to be done, and hopefully, done well. Sorry to ramble. Just know we understand the weight of expectations grows with each band that signs up, with each fan that hears from a friend what's happening. We're doing what we can, as soon as we can. It's a labor of love. The suggestions thrown up so far are very good ones! In fact, we've contacted several of the bands Kurt and Guy have kindly suggested - some respond right away, others not at all. And believe me, if anybody here has a direct line to R.E.M. or Tracey Thorn, let 'em know. For now, we're thrilled with Phil Wilson, The Clientele, The Orchids, to name just a few. Upwards and Onwards... |

David, thanks for all your effort on the tribute compilation--it sounds like it'll be great, even if you can't get the biggest of the big names. Anyway, the project is obviously in good hands. Good luck with it! Oh, by the way, at work, we do projects with a freelance photographer, David Belisle, who has done a lot of work with R.E.M. I don't know Belisle personally, but I can ask around and see if he can get an in with R.E.M. or its management. A longshot, but who knows? |

A female I'd love to hear sing "Quiet Heart": Georgia Hubley, from YLT. I think she could knock it out of the park and it strikes me as a perfect candidate for their slowcore treatment, a la "Pablo and Andrea". It's such a, well, quiet song... |

Look forward to hearing this. Having been given a cd of the recent Brisbane Grant tribute gig, I was amazed how good and different the songs sounded with the different artists involved. Being in UK, I hadn't heard of all of them but they did a fantastic job. Still seems terribly sad that we won't hear GBs songs played regularly live in future but it would be excellent to hear what other musicians can make of the songs. How about the Wedding Present - they have already covered Cattle and Cane - and might add a bit of noise to the cd. Teenage Fanclub? |

Kilbey's a bit patchy with covers. I'm sure the Wrong Road is great. Don't know if I like the Church's new cover of "Wide Open Road" though and " I am a Rock" was always a bit of a head scratching exercise. |

Tallulah having sprung I wait for you to come I am not sure if Robyn is referring to Grant, or if he ever mentioned the G-B's in one of his frequent interviews, but they were Yep Roc lablemates. I wonder what would happen if someone emailed the Yep Roc customer service email alias and asked about contacting RH or any other artists on the label. Back in the "OA distortion crisis" days, I had a few exchanges with customer service at Yep Roc and they were quite nice, though they didn't have any answers about the sound quality issues. (Sorry, everyone, for even mentioning this again.) I wonder if Kristin Hersh listened to the Go-Betweens at all? She's on Yep Roc now and has always been generous with her time and music for comps. I'd love to hear her take a stab at one of Grant's more "agitated" numbers, like "Apology Accepted" or "A Peaceful Wreck." |

I know that Ed Kuepper has completed his song for the tribute album but I'm not sure which one it is.I expect to receive it in the mail any day now. Grant was a great admirer of Ed's music and lifelong dedication to his art, as am I. Like the Go-Betweens, Kuepper is a genuine Brisbane original, whose art will stand the test of time. A whisper too...organisers are trying to get the Saints together for a reunion concert later this year. It's a tribute to Brisbane music. Wouldn't it be great if Rob Forster could be tempted to get up and sing although I believe this is low on his list of priorities at present. |

I had myself a bit of a brainstorm last night when listening to The Go-Betweens-Live in London. The triumphantly exuberant rendition of 'Love Goes On' gave me an idea along the lines of 'Free as a Bird' with its snippets of John Lennon. What about a few excerpts of Grant McLennan singing the verses from either this or another (recent bootleg?) recording being mixed in as seamlessly as possible with the entire lineup of this compilation belting out the chorus? It would become a real sing-along, in the spirit of the whole thing. |

Was Ed ever out? I've been patiently waiting and waiting and waiting for him to cut another record. I love the fact that he chose to do something of Grant's that is relatively new. None of that business of trapping an artist in his so-called "prime?" Concerning a reunion of the Saints, who needs it? As far as I'm concerned the Saints are where Ed started but nearly all of his best work was yet to come. What is it that must be in the Brisbane water (or the mosquitoes or whatever) for that town to produce the likes of Ed Kuepper, Robert Forster, Grant McLennan and Peter Milton Walsh all in such a tight time frame? What a miraculous legacy! And wouldn't it be nice if somehow somebody could coax out Walsh and get him to contribute to the album? He could complete a circle and do "That Way." |

Ed should have a new album out by the mid year, called JEAN LEE AND THE YELLOW DOG. From what I've heard so far, it's his best solo work yet. He's currently putting the finishing touches on it. Walsh doing a version of 'That Way' would be touching... |

Ed's recording of "Finding You" arrived in the mail yesterday...the name Jane Elliott appears on the disc - Ed Kuepper + Jane Elliott. I may be wrong but is she the cellist? It is a trademark Ed treatment of one of Grant's classics, just the beautiful clanging guitar (and the cello), unplugged if you will, above it Ed's melancholy drawl floating, the maestro paining over every word but sounding better than ever. (I'm not a rock critic in Rob Forster's league but I hope I've painted the picture for the punters). I really like what the artists at the triple J Tribute did with Go-Betweens songs and Ed's interpretation of FY is another wonderful addition. Grant would be so very thrilled to hear his fellow Brisbanite giving the song such a deft touch. |

Yes Steve, she's the cellist. I think Ed's a powerful interpreter of other people's songs, especially when he's putting a new spin on a song as opposed to doing a carbon copy of an original (which is what so many others do). |
