Browsing my bedtime reading "25,000 albums you have to own" - a book that is seriously damaging my bank account - I've come across another Great Australian Genius I've never heard of: Hugo Race. Anyone know anything about him and is Chemical Wedding really a masterpiece I absolutely have to have? Let me know, people. |

Hi Stuart, I've got two of his elder records with his Band True Spirit: Earl's World and Second Revelator, that was the time he lived in Berlin in the beginning of the 90's. Dark, slow blues, like Jon Spencer on Valium (and still some Nick Cave in it...Hugo played on the first Bad Seeds record)and a brilliant version of Marilyn's "River of no return" on Second Revelator. Back then I liked it but wasn't overwhelmed, so I didn't follow up to Chemical Wedding - but I could imagine he must have had the potential to make a really good record, maybe it's the Romance then... |

I have one of his albums on a Dutch label (I think). It's alright. Nothing too special. |
