Tomorrow night I will have my first alcoholic drink in 6 weeks. Unfortunately, because I am a heathen it was nothing to do with Lent, it was because I have worked the last 5 weekends in order to have more spondooliks to spend in Oz this summer, and also to fund a trip to Krakow for me and the mrs in a few weeks time.
Anybody else managed to stay on the wagon for as long as this, its the longest for me since I started drinking in the late 70s? Or, are there any christians amongst us who gave up drink, or some other pleasure, for Lent?

PS - tomorrow I shall be partaking of some Budvar, and whatever wine the wife cant finish :-)

I succesfully gave up sugar on my cornflakes and in my tea for Lent when I was 12 and have never returned to it. I haven't dared risk that success with any other abstinence since though. Elizabeth who uses this board mentioned not listening to music this Lent. I could never do that.

Yeah I saw that Padraig. I cannot imagine what it would be like not to play music for 1 day now. Pre portable music players it was easier, if thats the right expression, but now even if you go on holiday you can take an MP3 player stacked with more songs than you can conceivably play the whole holiday.
Are the Irish who have given up drink for Lent still "allowed" to have a few on Paddys day, or is than an urban myth?

My dear fellow Go-Betweens aficionados -

Believe me, it's been tough! I have had songs go through my head even though I'm not listening to them, and have kicked and screamed spiritually. Blessed are those that do not, and have a lot more patience than I. Looking forward to actually hearing some stuff in a few days! I have a fresh copy of 'Watershed' in my Easter basket along with the colored eggs and the Easter bread.

The usual practice in the Orthodox Church is to give up meat and dairy products throughout Lent and Holy Week, and priests suggest also that we give up TV, the Net, the CD player, etcetera.

A Happy Easter to all of you! Elizabeth

Actually the Budvar has had to take a back seat, to my great delight our local corner store had bottles of the Prague bottled beer Staropramen - 6 bottles for £5 - what a result.
Happy Easter everyone

The St Patrick's day thing was always nonsense Kevin. Up till the early 60s pubs in Ireland were all shut on St Patrick's day anyway. The whole notion of the Irish being drunk on St Patrick's day is an American thing. I've very rarely been drunk on St Patrick's day. I'd say about twice ever.

I've done periods without drink, have gone up to 3 or 4 months without one, I started drinking in '86/'87, kinda went on the wagon jan '97 after 2 years of heavy drinking, and since '97 i can take it or leace it. A glass of wine at home, i do tend to get smasehd when i goout though, i think coz my system isn't used to it, i probably go out on average only once a month, boring eh?

Had three beers at a friend's house warming yesterday afternoon and was half cut. I was drinking in the sun though. That always seems to multiply the effect of alcohol.

yes! i was at a wedding the other day and three or four glasses of cheap bubbly out in the autumn sun sure did the job alright.... i also came home with the most annoying little headache!

i'm thinking of giving up smoking (again) for lent. and yes, i'm aware it finished as of yesterday. but as irony would have it - i only "quit" two days ago....

I had one glass of wine yesterday at my sister's house for Easter, and ended up with a headache later on that night. That was the first alcohol I had in over two months.

Does crystal meth count?

That counts double, LK.

Actually, Michael, I'm envious of your restraint. I find it's far easier for me to do more of whatever it is I'm enjoying than less, and sometimes it takes a toll, especially as a float past the 40 mark. I'm going to have to invest in one of those tapes you put on while you're sleeping that repeats, "moderation is good, moderation is good..."

Ah, now you tell me...

I'm reminded of Denis Leary's bit about how "cutting back" in the 80's meant just having a case of beer and five or six joints a day...

I'll still drink some wine when I visit my best friends for long weekends that live in the beautiful Traverse City area in the NW lower peninsula area of Michigan. I bring up two bottles and between Suz, her husband Jim and I we polish them off pretty quick. We also go to wine festivals around TC, as they have over two dozen wineries in the area. Madonna's dad owns one, Ciccone Winery.

We used to share a bottle of wine over dinner until our daughter was born in 2002. Now we have the odd glass with the food, but with dinner at 630 pm instead of 9 as in the past the habits change. I know that many others here on the board have children, maybe someone agrees with this.

I do have the odd beer when i get home after work
and yes, Spence, going out these days can be dangerous.
