Padraig, "Heigh Ho" is amazing! Now I see why Waits' name came up in a Captain Beefheart discussion. Favorite song for the week doesn't have to be a new one, does it? If I have to choose one for this week it's the Chills' "Wet Blanket." Hardin, I love "I am Waiting." It reflects well on Buckingham that he'd choose to cover it. |

I have gotta hear this new Hitchcock album! I love that earlier song he did about Seattle--I can't remember what it's called, but they play it on KEXP here a lot. And playing now (the iPod on shuffle): The Slits - FM Which followed: Delta 5 - Now That You've Gone The iPod is feeling inspired this morning. |

I've just lately been checking out Jens. He's excellent, isn't he? There was some discussion about him here a few mos. ago, but I'd not heard him at that point. But, in the past couple of weeks, I've downloaded some stuff by him and have been very impressed by what I've heard. And to see him with an all blond Swedish girl band...man! I think I'd rather see that than any band that springs to mind! On a related note, I hope to make it to see Los Straitjackets tomorrow night (if events allow)- they're playing in Solana Beach, close to San Diego. They're already quite cool, playing surf music wearing Mexican wrestling masks, with choreography, but adding to the coolness quotient, they'll have the World Famous Pontani Sisters, a popular (new) burlesque act, appearing with them as their go-go dancers. Go-go dancers rule. If I were King of the World, I'd make it mandatory that all groups, be they the Go-Betweens, Rapeman, Tortoise, or the Vienna Boys Choir, have go-go dancers. |

The Melvins, with 'luded-out go-go dancers with so much hair you can't see their faces! That Los Straitjackets/Pontani Sisters show should be a riot. I'm so out of touch with live music that I just discovered they played here about five days ago. Need to check those listings more than once every two months... |

Kurt, the earlier song about Seattle was Viva Sea Tac from the Jewels For Sophia album from 1999. Belltown Ramble is a much better song!! "Belltown Ramble" > and you wanna know what is > and also what is not > don't you girl? > it's an independant life > and you want to see your eyes > reflected in the world > so you go down Fourth to Blanchard That's "Fourth to Blanchard" As in Fourth Avenue in Seattle in the Belltown neighborhood. BTW this a much mouch cooler Seattle song than the rather embarassing Viva Sea Tac from Robyn's 1999 ablum Jewels For Sophia.. > and turn right on Roq la Rue That's Roq la Rue (http://www.roqlarue.com/)a pop art gallery on Second Ave a block up from as... > past the Crocodile ...the Crocodile Cafe http://www.thecrocodile.com/ Robyn plays there a lot. > then you slide down Fourth again where The Claremont used to be Again that's Fourth ave The Claremont used to be a hotel. Now its apartments or a retirement home or something. > say hello ariel (r.e.l.) onto C-L-A-R-E-M-O-N-T > then you find the uzbek warlord > you collide with tamerlane > his teeth are brown > oh he doesn't speak he prods you > then he says burning trains > back in your hometown > then you roll down Denny Way This is Denny Way which Fourth avenue runs into. > past the pink rotating elephant this is the sign for the Elephant Car Wash http://www.elephantcarwash.com/ >e.x.p. this either refers to the offices of KEXP (http://www.kexp.org) or the Experince Music Project Building both of which are close by http://www.emplive.org/ > and you say well come what may > now i'm in my element > i'm where i ought to be > but tamerlaine is hot > he's mounted on the elephant > the coffee's on the boil > and he says what have you got? > you say i don't have anything > he says you must have oil > so you wanna know what is > and also what is not > don't you girl? > it's an independant life > and you want to see your eyes > reflected in the world > look out baby > seven men are on their way > seven sets of appetites > have got to be appeased today > igornance comes first > then comes opportunism > greed is third > fundamental faith rides in > backwards with his eyes shut > listening for the word > in bowls number five > he needs a bit of elbow room > his name is haste > he fires off a slew of emails > and says put your hands together boys > for six eight k a waist For six 8k a waste? For six ok a waste? > the boys all look around > they look to number seven > reclining in his chair > he's got his headphones on > his head is full of paradise > he isn't there > and also what is not > don't you girl? > it's an independant life > and you want to see your eyes > reflected in the world > tamerline and i went to > The Two Bells The Two Bells Tavern a nice divey place Robyn often plays ecret shows at. > back on Fourth Fourth Ave again. > ken orders some wine > and we say how's it going > ken he said it's going north > to canada > it's going to canada > you can walk a square > you can walk an oblong > even just walk straight > you'll still be standing there > though you think you did the job wrong > you did it great |

Beck - Think I'm In Love I don't have the new CD yet--will pick it up tomorrow, probably--but I heard about half of it yesterday and this track is stuck in my brain. As everyone is saying, the new stuff sounds great. It's the album I've been waiting for by him, I'm guessing...the one where he puts all of his musical sides together into one great, original whole, rather than a genre exercise. |

Denim, ah, there's a name, I remember receiving a plectrum from Lawrence in '90/'91 it was a really large plectrum and it had the Bell jeans logo on it, very unique at the time, that's our Lawrence!! Beck, Soldier Jane, I adore that song, love the end too. |

Kevin and Michael, would you say the reissued Coney Island Baby sounds as good or better than the original vinyl? The vocals seemed way too far in front of the music in the mix (usually true on Lou Reed albums, admittedly). I suppose it's still true on the new CD, unless it was remixed a bit. |

Kurt, because the original album was released mid70s I dont think the vinyl sound can be beaten here. For me, the mid 70s was vinyl prime time for 2 main reasons. The vinyl was still thick rather than those flimsy artefacts that appeared from the 80s onwards and therefore had great sound, and secondly studios were still geared up for that warm analogue sound that unfortunately gave way to the shiny, bright digitized abominations of the 80s and 90s. 2 things to ponder about this. Does anybody else think its a rip off that you have to pay extra for these 180g vinyl albums that are produced these days? back in the day it was the norm. Do you think kids prefer the brash digital sounds of today rather than the warm analogue sound that I (we?) prefer? I think that was one of the things I love about the Midlake album, it has a retro sound. |

Conspiracy theory alert! Yep, Kevin I remember being 'forced' into CD purchasing eventually by the incredibly crappy vinyl pressings that existed. After the 5th vinyl copy of 'Don't Try This AT Home' by Billy Bragg being returned to the shop (warped + pressed off centre) I succumbed. Apparently EMI used to press all classical records from virgin vinyl, whilst the Beatles albums (their cash cow) were made from recycled vinyl. It's funny that listening to records with clicks and scratches doesn't bother me so much now. Maybe my hearing is just gone?! |

Thanks, Kevin. It's true--my ancient vinyl copy of "Coney Island Baby" on RCA still sounds fine, not too scratchy or static-y. And you and Andrew make good points about later vinyl. I still remember having to take back Bowie's "Heroes" ('78) and Reed's "Legendary Hearts" ('83) three or four times each because the vinyl was warped or scratched beyond hope. And those were both on RCA, so their standards had dropped big time. Still, I think I'll pick up the CD reissue for the liner notes and bonus tracks. It has "Nowhere at All," right? And what else... "Downtown Dirt" and an earlier take of "Leave Me Alone"? |

Hi there, Randy! The Castaways and the Trashmen were two Twin Cities bands that first put us on the the pop music map here in the US. But 'a prophet is not without honor except in his own country.' In my kindergarten days I didn't know that they were local, I just knew that back then KDWB and WDGY played all the good music and that a lot of it did come from California. *S* I honestly can't say if there is a parallel to the Go-Betweens in Minnesota pop music, whether Soul Asylum, the now-forgotten Jayhawks, or the extraordinarily long-lived Del Counts even had half the musical gifts of RF/GMcL. |

I did not know that, Liz. Cool - it is truly an immortal song and is more fun than a barrel of rabid monkeys. Is there a lot of surfing in the Twin Cities? I do love the surf music - there are times when I consider throwing away all my other CDs and listening to it exclusively. Speaking of Minnesota, are you into the excellent Hold Steady? They hail from there, I believe. |

Jayhawks are not forgotten by me either Pádraig (apart from their awful last album) I missed out on seeing Mark Olsen's new band The Creedippers when they were in London about 6 months ago (guess I can't see every single I'd like to) I was listening to Xfm (here in London) sometime ago - The John Kennedy Show (he interviewed Grant and Robert prior to Oceans Apart). He asked listeners to namecheck their fave Minnesotta acts...we had Prince, and a Husker Du track, and many more acts I can't remember. I e-mailed him with Jayhawks, and he read it out on air. However, he didn't play my request - Take Me With YOu (When You Go) I wonder what Gary Louris is up to these days, he is one cool customer. |

Don't play it Pádraig. Not sure I dig Tim O'Reagan's vocals. Wedge Sound of Lies or Hollywood Town Hall into your CD player. Thanks Pádraig I didn't even know about that band - I'll check them out on allmusic.com. What are your thoughts on Jayhawks ever bringing out new material? the word is that they haven't spilt, but are on 'hiatous'. I've just found the following, just having posted elsewhere on Peter Buck... http://www.jayhawksfanpage.com/news/news.html |

Golden Smog are great Matt. Kind of an indie supergroup with members of Jayhawks, Wilco, Big Star, Run Westy Run, Soul Asylum and others. Their best is the 1998 album Weird Tales. The recent one is the first since that. Have a look here http://www.myspace.com/goldensmog http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Smog |

"Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)" by Looking Glass. An example of that genre of tune that experienced a major heyday in the 60s and 70s, the "I love ya babe, but the road/sea/cosmos is callin'" song. This one's a little more insidious because on the surface it acts like it's delving into the woman's point of view but you don't have to scratch very far to see that all we learn about Brandy is that she's a seaport barmaid and she's in love with a sailor. The rest of the song is taken up with (surprize!) the sailor and why he can't stay. The closest we get to her feelings on the subject are: "Brandy does her best to understand." Sheesh. Still, musically it's the nifty pop tune I fell for way back when, and I always liked the indolent hipster sound of the lead vocalist. |

This won't surprise LK, but... "Frontera" - Phil Manzanera And a Ron Wood solo reference! That's got to be a first for the board. I remember that song. It was at least as good as what the Stones were doing at the time, which isn't the highest praise in the world, I suppose. |

"All Over" - Phoebe Snow Her one hit, "Poetry Man" should be buried in a deep, deep hole somewhere, but I like quite a few other songs by this lady. There's some eccentricity in her vocal style, but it's only occasionally annoying...otherwise she projects a warm, complex, human personality. |

Thanks to LK's superior musical radar, my song of the moment is "Rehab" by Amy Winehouse. I'm sure you lot in the UK are sick of her, but she's new and novel here. A modern R&B song with live Motown-style drums instead of stupid drum machines? How can I resist? |

Yeah Astronaut does have a definite NO vibe to it, cracking song. The version on Rendezvous is slightly different to the one on CLose Cover Before Striking, think the former is the one on the Best Of... And speaking of the Best Of Luna album, those 18 or so songs would definitley not have been on my Best Of...they left out some gems and included some average songs.. |

Spence, I think it's supposed to be released in the US on May 15th, UK & Ireland should be soon after. The WilcoWorld website (http://www.wilcoworld.net/) has been streaming the album now and again, check it out there. Alternatively, check out the Wilco fan site Via Chicago (http://forums.viachicago.org/), they have some threads (see under 'Just A Fan') dedicated to the new album and some fans have posted links to songs etc. I'm old-fashioned so gonna wait till it comes out. Have booked flights to Berlin, my mate is to book the tickets for our gang. Via Chicago is where I got those YHF demo sessions Spence. I got a Demo session for Summerteeth as well by the way, if you want more info about that just say so... My favourite Luna album is Bewitched but popular opinion says Penthouse, easily available at good value prices in shops or the net, they would be good intros i think. |

Little Keith, compilations are aimed at the uninitiated i suppose so for people who have all the records they aren't going to do much, I bought it for the second disc of covers really. I do get kinda bored though with them always turning out Sideshow By The Seashore and 23 Minutes in Brussels, great songs but it's kinda like the way Sugar Mountain, The Needle and the Damage Done and Old Man are played by Neil Young on live albums and at his gigs. I think a few of these might have given the Best Of record an extra zing...Speedbumpss/Astronaut (both Rendezvous), Slide/Slash Your Tires (both Lunapark), Mermaid Eyes/Dizzy (with the hilarious lift of Van Halen's Jump words and tune)... Dean and Britta are starting a North American tour, might be worth checking out if they pass through your patch... |

Well, I'm seeing them in Seattle in about three weeks. I don't know if they'll have a band or what. It would be cool if Sonic Boom toured with them. Wonder if they'll do any Luna numbers? And I'm sure they'll be trekking up and down the West Coast, hitting all the usual hot spots. |

They're playing here, as well, in a free concert at the Getty Center. So, I'll probably have to go, if for no other reason, to see if Britta is as delectable in real life as she appears on their album covers... I kid - I actually like their new disc, so seeing them would be no hardship. I'll be curious to see if they actually have a band with them or if it's just them. |

yep they will have a band and do some Luna songs...here's a review of a recent Chicago gig... The band strode onstage at 10:15 sharp, and then beat a hasty retreat back to the wings having realized they'd broken one of the codes of rock showmanship. The second time, their drummer and keyboardist (the wonderful Lara Meyerratken) came onstage first and took their places, followed by Ms Phillips and then finally, Dean Wareham. They began appropriately with a set of the Dean & Britta material, benefiting from a terrific sound mix, bathed in warm coloured lights and with Wareham and Phillips trading vocals on "Singer Sing". "Night Nurse". But after Britta dazzled on "You Turned My Head Around", Dean began an unexpected and familiar guitar rhythm. "Moon Palace". I'd known they were going to be playing Luna material on this tour but I expected a token song or two from the later albums. Not "Moon Palace", and yet here it was - sounding slightly different, obviously, yet still amazing. Dean handled all the guitar solos himself and while I'd never say Sean Eden was unnecessary... on this night, his absence wasn't felt. After that unexpected visit from the past, they returned to the D&B repertoire with numbers like winesome "The Sun Is Still Sunny" and lush "Knives From Bavaria" and then, once again, bam. "Chinatown". Then "Tiger Lily", with Meyerratken handling rhyhtm guitar duties for what was probably the first time (she played fine but lookeed more than a bit nervous about the role). Then back into the Galaxie 500 songbook for "Strange" (so strange to hear Dean's older, more refined voice wrapping itself a song recorded so long ago) and the finale, expected but totally welcome, of "Bonnie & Clyde". A glorious, glorious set made more remarkable by the fact that they managed to time it for one hour exactly. The encore - there was no way this crowd of devotees was letting them go just yet - was Wareham's career in condensed form. Starting with "Ginger Snaps" from L'Avventura, then the title track from my favourite Luna album Bewitched, and finally with maybe the seminal G500 song, "Tugboat". And then a final wave and goodbye. Though Dean & Britta, the band, is unequivocally a partnership between Phillips and Wareham, the live show is still very much about Dean. The set lists they're choosing brings him up to the mic far more than he has been in their recent studio efforts, there's so much more guitarwork (and he's gotten himself some sharp new guitars, let me tell you) and the audience - well, let's just say they weren't johnny-come-latelies. It was so great to see and hear a band that's obviously not Luna, but also doesn't feel the need to prove it. Dean had a sense of pride in his body of work and appreciation for the fans that was obvious to everyone in attendance and while I don't know what anyone else's expectations were, I can say that mine were fairly high and were still exceeded many times over. It might well be the fanboy in me talking, but that was one of the absolute best nights of music I can remember for a long time. So. Best. Long live Luna. |

Yep, there's something about them that's definitely addictive. Some music is like that - it's not very similar to Luna, but I remember being unable to stop listening to the first Pretenders disc. Something about it was incredibly seductive, like a drug... With Luna I think it's that it's such simple music, with such pleasant surfaces...It's sort of like Mantovani for hipsters. |

"She's Lost Control" My favorite JD song. If you could harness the power of that bassline you could topple the Bush White House... |

Al Stwewart - Year of the cat. Its like Momus (Although Momus was never English whimsy) playing Nick Drake on a Dansette, whilst contemplatng swapping the disc for Nils Logfren. Allen tis a great bass line, full of mystery and power. It still amazes me. LK You got the new Wilco album? Do you like it? |

Spence, I have a CDR copy of the new Wilco obtained for me under, no doubt, dodgy circumstances by a friend. No worries though, because I'm definitely buying it when it comes out. I think it's great. I think my pal figured out how to burn it from the streamed copy they were offering on their website. Now, there's a band that's come to terms with all this downloading stuff, a band that has confidence. They know if you hear their stuff, there's a pretty good chance you're gonna wanna buy it. |

XY, I'd recommend "Hypnotised" by the Undertones. A terrific mix of power pop and post punk. |

Spence, I used to own 3 Al Stewart albums I was very fond of: "Year of the Cat" "24 Parrots" and "The Early Years," which collected his very nice "Love Chronicles" album complete, along with selections from his first three records. |

Oh, man, "The Electric Company." I haven't seen that show since it was on the air during my youth, but it's seared into memory (remember Easy Reader?). Watching it now would be like having an LSD flashback. Um, I assume. |

It certainly is an experience...more soon when I have a little more time and can sum up the right words. You do remember who played Easy Reader, right? |

Completely unrelated segue: do you live near that sandwich joint that a coyote wandered into yesterday, Rob? Cute story - they are great looking beasts, even if one apparently ate my friend's kitty that wandered out onto a golf course here...I just didn't realize they had 'em in Chi-town.... |

Not near in the sense of next door, LK. I think that sandwich shop is in the Loop, right downtown, which makes the presence of a coyote even stranger. It happens a lot, though. There are quite a few of the critters in the city proper and they capture about 10 to 15 a year. Sounds like this one was almost domesticated. Apparently he walked in and plopped down in front of the soda 'fridge. Just hangin' out. |

Indeed...showcasing not only Morgan Freeman but the incandescent Rita Moreno as well. I remember years back, when Conan O'Brien was still pretty new on the air, he had Freeman as a guest. He told Freeman the first place he remembered him from was EC and Freeman started doing that thing one does when one doesn't want to make a scene butdeeming any work they did in kid's entertainment there's no way you're going to answer a question: looking down embarrassedly, chuckling while saying "no, no way" over and over. He said it was kid stuff, not worth talking about. A fairly common response among actors, sadly...if what they did was junk I could understand, but I think we're certainly well past the point where it's indisputable that the best of children's entertainment is equal in artistic merit to the best grownup stuff... |

OK, I really have to work on my editing...I'm sure any readers have figured this out, but if not, delete that "deeming any work they did in kid's entertainment" while reading the third sentence. |

LK, to pick up on your unrelated segue from yesterday, you'll be happy to know the Quizno's coyote was released into the wild yesterday out in the 'burbs (he jumped out of his carrier, ran about 20 yards and ran into a pole). I'd say he was released "back" into the wild except that hanging out in downtown Chicago sandwich shops isn't exactly "the wild" in the first place. Unless there's some kind of E-coli scare afoot. |

That is great to know, Rob. I saw some footage of it being turned loose - that critter was definitely happy to be free... Like I said, they are great looking animals. I'd look into getting one for a pet if not for the minor detail that it would probably eat my cat for a midnight snack. Also, here in CA, there are probably laws against even thinking about having coyotes as pets... |

I feel a little guilty going back to the topic at hand because coyotes eating house pets is more interesting than what I'm about to say, but the song of the week for me is: Low - "Murderer" These are some seriously chilling, spooky Mormons, folks. Lou Reed never did scary this well. |

Jarvis Cocker - "I Will Kill Again" And he will, you know. Nice companion piece to Low's "Murderer." And Joni Mitchell's "Coyote" since I wronged the poor animal in my previous post. |

Great song, indeed, Herr Kurt. I think, if you added the line "check into the GBs message board", it would describe a lot of us, certainly me. And "Coyote" is a genius song, too. In addition to the great, jazzy music, I really like the lyrics, particularly for their rejection of traditional moral values. She knows the object of her affections is a complete and unrepentant womanizer, and that they are, in essence, just having a fling, but she doesn't care, because it's what she wants too. My song of the week, or last 48 hours or whatever, is "Blue Crystal Blue R.I.P." by Dean and Britta. |

Randy, all this Pale Fountains frenzy has forced me to search deep for my vinyl copy of Pacific Street, which I will stick on this weekend at some point. God only knows the last time I played it, maybe 20 years ago. I always thought the cover of this album was really cool. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pacific-Street-P ale-Fountains/dp/B000006TEC/ref=sr_1_2/2 03-9765531-3731119?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1 177147300&sr=8-2 as well as the "cool pic" there as some nice enthusiastic reviews from people who have bought the album in the link above |
