On Sunday I went to the Community Cup in St Kilda, Melbourne for the first time. It's an annual charity Aussie Rules footy game, in its 14th year now, with proceeds going to the Sacred Heart Mission in St Kilda. It's always the Espy Rockdogs (mostly musicians who cut their teeth playing at the Esplanade Hotel in St Kilda) versus the RRR/PBS Megahertz (mostly announcers from 3RRR or 3PBS, Melbounre public radio stations). There's always a great atmosphere and this year was no exception - 18,000 people and almost as many dogs. The football isn't up to much but it's a fun day. The umpires always wear different costumes - in the program there was a picture of them (from last year I think) wearing glasses and red plastic hats in their best Dvo "Whip-It" style. This year the umpires were dressed as Ramones, but with footy shorts instead of ripped jeans. There are a whole bunch of awards given to players who distinguish themselves during the game, and all the awards are named after late rock musicians (from Melbourne, mostly). But one of the categories this year was the Grant McLennan award for "Most Stylish Player". I think he would have liked that. |
