I tried to join the Four Ages of Robert Forster too but finally had to cancel the plans because my disc makes trouble again and I’ll probably have to spent some days in bed instead 25 hours in a plane…
I thought it might be a good idea to buy some DVDs in advance to travel Australia in bed but would need some recommendations for the topic:
Oz in the movies.
I know the likes of Mad Max, Priscilla, early Peter Weir, Werner Herzog’s Green Ants and McLeod's Daughters, but what are your favourite movies dealing with Australia – fiction or not, history or contemporary, located at a waterhole near Alice Springs or in the pits of Sydney or Melbourne – the more unknown (at least here in Europe) the better.
Thank you!

Bad Boy Bubby, it'll horrify you at the start and have you rolling around laughing at the end...

Wolfgang, do a search around the archives here. We had a big discussion about Australian films a couple of years ago. Maybe three years ago. God, have I been posting here that long? I guess I have.

Definitely on the light and dumb end of things but some friends and I were just talking about "Starstruck" at dinner last night. It's the stock wanna-be-a-star story set in Sydney in the early/mid 80s. Nice scenery.

Wolfgang, the shows are still nearly two months away. I hope your back isn't tormenting you that long!

I enjoyed 'Japanese Story' starring Toni Collette which was filmed in the Pilbara desert and 'The Dish' starring Sam Neill which was partly filmed in and around Parkes, New South Wales.

Also highly recommended is 'Proof' starring Hugo Weaving and Russell Crowe which has a marvellous soundtrack by Not Drowning Waving who formed in Melbourne in the early 1980's.

Don's Party. A sick f-in' movie, but you'll laugh till you cry...I think there are some political dimensions, but it's mainly about people drinking till they puke and trying to sleep with each other's wives.

The Devils Playground - Fred Schepisi superb 1976 semi-autobiographical film about going to school in Catholic seminary. A fascinating insight into sexual repression and the problems it causes. One of the best Aussie films from the 70's.

Set in South Africa, but filmed in Burra (South Australia) . If Wikipedia is correct...

Andrew,

Since it wasn't shot on the Veldt, then I'll boost 'The Breaker' up to #5. Now I'm wondering if On The Beach was shot in OZ.

Great work, thanks... Some of them are really hard to get around here but I'll do my best.

Randy: FC Avoiding Surgery beats Forster United (and you lucky bloke will be in that team! cheers...) 2:0. Maybe House MD would have encouraged me to go but not my gentle and careful rheumatologist. I'll buy me a good mattress instead and cry in my pillow.
Pádraig, I love sneaking through the Old Testament of the board but this time it was pure egoism, idle- and selfishness and I like what I've got.
