The Clientele - Losing Haringeygey

I really love spoken word, this remonds me of Dave Couse, the way he narrates a story or a feeling, really beautiful, very English also.

So far just got them from Napster Spence, lots of good singles and b side extras. The first 3 albums are of course wonderful, Magic Murder and The Weather was one album too far, minus the McGeoch magic

The Cowboy Junkies - Brand New World

Its a really, really lovely piece of music, its got everything that i aspire to in a piece, laid back, nice sounding tube amplifiers, 'live' sounding tight simple drums, simple bass, beautiful voice, understated, like June Tabor, McGarrigle's 9thanx Randy) clever, sincere string section, it actually reminds me of Television, in its arrangement, the guitar at the end is like a homage to Marquee Moon, the drums help, they sound like Billy Ficca aged 60 (oh he probably is!, 70 then!).

So, yes, I love this song, its soooooooong of the week and they are a great band!

shake some action - flamin groovies.
this lot sort of passed me by in the punk/new wave rush of the late 70s. just downloaded a double CD of the Sire years from the late 70s. Randy, I guess you like this kinda stuff - they started off as Beatlish British invasion kind of stuff didnt they? Does anybody rate this period in their back catalogue?

Kevin, the song "Shake Some Action" is excellent. I'm also keen on "You Tore Me Down" which was released as a single on music critic Greg Shaw's Bomp label in about 1976 or so. It's just about perfect as a pop song and especially remarkable for its era. But most of the "Shake Some Action" album suffers enormously from the "name that tune" crime and they desperately needed a real lead vocalist. It's this period when they copped the Beatles/Mersey sound shamelessly because that's what guitarist Cyril Jordan liked best. The earlier Groovies (before "Shake Some Action") were more like an idealized Beggars Banquet-era Rolling Stones. Jordan was in them at that time too, but the real force then was Roy Loney who actually had some vocal presence. Songs like "Teenage Head" (get your mind out of the gutter LK) and "Slow Death" are major trash rock classics.

The Groovies' claim to fame is that they made music that ran counter to the weight of just about everything else people were doing from 1970 or so through about 1976. And they came from San Francisco, no less. It was a real relief in those dark years. As I recall they still did some worthwhile things as late as 1978 or '79 but by then they were sinking into pure nostalgia. Punk rendered them unnecessary. And looking back today, I'd say that you could put together one single disc of solid music leaving behind an awful lot of what they originally did.

Ever since reading the above Flamin Groovies postings it's been "Laurie Did It," from the Supersnazz album.
