Ingmar Bergman, passed away at 89. He had a rep for telling stories that were dour and bleak, and there's certainly a basis for that sumup - but once one starts delving into his filmography (which to me sort of has the feel of a big fat anthology of interrelated cinematic stories and novels) it doesn't take long to discover that his tapestry and emotional range went far beyond that. | ||

I dated a woman once who used my love of Bergman films as a predictor of whether or not I'd be a adequate father and whether, in fact, I could be convinced to reproduce at all, given what she figured must be a deeply dark and fatalistic world view. I scoffed at her logic, and rebutted her every argument vigorously and skillfully. Lo and behold, she was right, the jerk. RIP, Ingmar. | ||

Yes, RIP Ingmar, I'm ashamed to admit it, but I have zippo Bergman films in my DVD collection. In fact, the only Swedish film I have is the Criterion edition of the original Insomnia with Stellen Skarsgard. I did see Cries and Whispers though in the theater 30 some years ago and rented Scenes From A Marriage. | ||

Michael, the original Insomnia film is excellent, really really good. Didn't see the American re-make (and there is absolutely no need to anyway, it would only annoy me) because I refuse to watch anything with Al Pacino in it anymore, I just can't take him playing the same role in each and every film. The last good thing he did was Carlito's Way in my opinion... | ||

Spending more time with Bergman & Antonioni over the past few days...one big thing that's come up for me is the huge disparity between the working style of the two: Bergman's meticulous preparation and execution vs. Antonioni's "let's just start filming and see what happens" attitude. Each producing amazing results due to the common thread, something that comes as close to a "rule" for creating true art as exists: intuition is the guide. If it doesn't feel right it probably isn't. | ||

XY765, I'll go one Al movie beyond Carlito's Way, and include Donnie Brasco as the last good thing he did. Al played a thick headed street level wise guy, his voice and mannerisms in DB were something he had never played before. The whole cast did a great job though in that movie. I just got the extended cut DVD that added some extra minutes into the movie that made a great movie even better. | ||
