Just read about this (on The Triffids board), four nights in Brisbane at the end of July: "Seminal Australian musician, singer and songwriter Robert Forster takes a deeply personal journey through his solo recording career of the 90s. Over three consecutive evenings Robert will reunite the original recording artists to perform three of his solo albums in their entirety. In what promises to be a landmark event he will complete the four ages of Robert Forster performing a selection of The Go-Betweens songs." http://www.queenslandmusicfestival.com.a u/02_cal/details.asp?ID=56 I wish I was in Brisbane. |

Let's see, what are the odds of my winning the lottery before late July? I could sell my house, but it likely wouldn't close by then. Due to an allergy to guns, bank robbery is out. And I don't know any rich old ladies I could swindle out of their millions. Ah, crap. |

I'm speechless... or am I? It's a good sign that Mr. Forster has unthawed enough to perform once again. Grant McLennan, of course, can never be replaced, and the lineup on that last night looks like a performing air squadron with a deliberately empty place in their formation - but a glorious flight planned anyway. |

Hmmm, very tempting. I wonder how much it'd cost to fly to Queensland. That is, at least, a lot of advance notice, which could be helpful in securing a deal. You probably wouldn't have to sell your house, Rob. Maybe an organ or two... I know which night I'd make MY priority. |

The only thing that would have been better save Grant still being alive would have been to include a 5th age, The G-B's 1982-89 with Lindy, Robert Vickers and Amanda. I wish that Rob and Lindy would forgive the hurt and settle things and get back together to record again with Amanda and Vickers. Adele could play keyboards and the G-B's could have a double trap drum set-up with Glen and Lindy! |

Oh God, I want to go!!! It's a toss-up between staying in the country illegally, hiding in the outback until end of July, or living on bread and water when I get home, to afford another visit so soon!!! |

I've known about this for sometime but seeing it in print today did make me pretty excited...The Danger in the Past night with Mic Harvey and Thomas Wydler, sure to be the highlight. My favourite Robert songs (in or out of the Gobs). To those who live on distant shores...haha...Its not often that people get jealous of us Brisbanites, and the Powerhouse is all of 500 metres from my house. July is a going to be a very special month, can't wait!! |

Randy, I am a vivid shade of green at your decision to make the show--budget, work demands, and my lack of a current passport keep me from making a similar "oh hell, life's too short" decision to go. Anyway, congrats--you're going to have the time of your life. A friend/coworker of mine went to Australia with her husband about a month ago and spent a day in Brisbane. Here are some pix as a teaser: http://www.dahmens.com/public/gallery10/ index1.htm |

Thanks for the photo link Kurt. Los Angeles has a lot of things going for it but it is utterly devoid of visual charisma. Brisbane seems to have lots of it. Yeah I'm looking forward to this. Btw, the passport issue is pretty easy to fix in the time frame but I suppose budget and work demands are the main problems for you. |

Apart from the fact that I've wanted to go for what LK might call a coon's age, I think this is an important time. These will be Robert's first shows since Grant's death, right? He has to have wondered many times over the past year whether he has any musical future. After all, neither his solo albums nor Grant's were what you could call commercial successes. And these shows are going to be priceless. I too hope that they're filmed. |

Since you are flying there at no small expense to yourself, sir, all the way from the States, I think the least you're due is an audience with Le Forster! I think we on the board should lobby for him to meet with you. Jonathan, are you listening? If you are, please pass that along, the supreme sacrifice one of our brethren is making! Be sure and take copious mental notes, Randy. |

Wow, Randy, that is wildly awesome that you're going! This really is a significant moment in Forster's career. I wish I could go, obviously, but having just returned from a 3 1/2 week vacation in Italy, there's no way my work (or the limited funds in my bank account) would let me. |

I'm going!!!! My flight is booked and paid for, before I had a chance to chicken out. I know I'd never forgive myself if I didn't go... The leaking roof is definitely waiting until next year. Until then, how many buckets can I buy for about €20 - which is all I'll have left, by early August!!! |

I've just done a bit of 'admin' on a possible first trip to Australia (I'm in London) - it's over £1,000 for a plane ticket. I haven't completely ruled it out yet. Weird to think that I saw the penultimate gig in Bilbao before Grant's death. Shame the Apartments are playing over a week before Robert's shows - catching both would mean me resigning from work (quite an appealing thought!) I'm shocked the Apartments are playing again and are even on Myspace. Does anybody know when they were in the UK last? I would hate to think that I missed them. |

Excellent, thanks Donat. It makes me feel better in one way - I was 10 years old in '87. Just researched that The Evening Visits... Came out in '85. I don't think there is much chance that they will come over to the UK. Ah well...maybe I can find some solace on a YouTube recording. |

Try flights to Sydney with an internal up to Brisbane. Mine clocked in at €500 cheaper (from Ireland), flying that way. |

Randy/ Catherine, I think Little Keith's idea of seeing whether Robert would be up for a little publicity with fans from Ireland and the US is a great idea. I work for a suburban newspaper and I can get a picture story done, no problems. It would be funny: people coming from across the world to hear songs of the Go-Betweens, a band most of Australia has probably never heard of. When I send a copy of my novel to Robert, I will mention what people have been saying. |

When in Brisbane, you should stay at Dahrl Court, the same flats Grant used to live in ca. 80/81 (where the video for Your Turn, My Turn was filmed). There's also a side-shot of the building (the one with the cactii) inside Send Me A Lullaby. http://www.dahrlcourt.com.au/welcome.htm l |

Bernie, with regard to your suggestion, not that I don't appreciate your efforts, but please don't include me in any plans. As much as it would make my day, year even, I'd prefer to forego ever meeting Robert, than have my picture taken, or be written about. The thought freaks me out completely. |

Fair enough, Catherine. What I might do, when I send him my novel today, is just mention to Robert someone is coming from Ireland and another from the US and see what he says. If he wants top meet you, your meeting him does not have to be tied to any ohoto or story |

I confess I pretty much share Catherine's view of things but was too wimpy to come out and say so. I also have someone very nicely offering to set up a solo gig for me while I'm there (as if I've ever done one!)and I'm still working out how to explain to him that I'm just a tosser (I think I'm using the word correctly, Kevin?) who records music in a bedroom and there's no way I want to face Australian beer bottles hurled at me while doing my stuff in public. I'm just looking forward to having a very nice visit to a city I've wanted to see for a long time now, watching Robert put on a series of shows nobody would ever imagine he would do and meeting a few of the wonderful folks from this terrific board. |

Some short news from Tuition website: Robert Forster performs four nights at the Queensland Music Festival at the end of July. The shows, entitled The Four Ages of Robert Forster, will be different each night and take place from 25th-28th July 2007 at the Brisbane Powerhouse, Australia. Robert takes a deeply personal journey through his solo recording career of the 90s. Over three consecutive evenings Robert will reunite the original recording artists to perform three of his solo albums in their entirety. Randy, I would never use the word tosser to describe you, certainly not the way it is used in Scotland. Up here it is very uncomplimentary and I'm far too polite to explain it here now that we have more ladies onboard. If I interpret your post correctly you are using it in a "low self esteem" kind of way. I'm sure the shy and retiring natives of Oz have an even more colourful word for tosser |

Catherine, even ladies gotta drop some colorful language here and there. There's a song by Usher (yes, hip hop) called Yeah (I'm stretching here but it was featured in Hitch which could be classified as a chick flick) where Ludacris sings the line, "We want a lady in the street but a freak in the bed..." And somehow I think this all ties together although it could have simply been the tall Blue Moon beer I had for lunch on a work day...Oi!....Next! |

I swear, I think the word "tosser" came into the American vocabulary because of the movie "The Commitments." They, uh, tossed it around quite a lot, so I think most Americans view it as analogous to idiot or dork or moron or some such put down. And Catherine, good for you. Ladies who think they're ladies usually aren't, and ladies who are ladies usually aren't very interesting - at least not interesting enough to spend their roof-repair money on a Go-Betweens tour of Australia. Cheers. |
