I'm in the mood - Jan Akkerman
I know the favour of the GoBetweens site is rightly towards singer-songwriting stuff with smart words and good tunes, but the Dutch guitarist some of you older folk may recall as the Messiahish-looking bloke who played with Focus is one of the few instrumentalists I really love listening to, and here he's wringing out a wonderful bluesy line with that unique guitar sound he has...lovely groove.

Used to have all the Focus records back in the day. I think someone stole them at a party once. Also think I had album called Tabernacle by said Akkerman. Would this be right Stuart?

Don't Go Home With Your Hard-On - David McComb & Adam Peters.

Yes, both songs from the 1991 Leonard Cohen covers comp I'm Your Fan. Also featuring Robert Forster of course.

Fave 2 songs, Glad its over & Sad and Blue - Stephen Harrison.

Great singer / songwriter from Edinburgh. Had stuff releases on Crepuscule, produced by Alan Rankine and Paul Haig.

Please be aware, this Myspace does NOT feature, any females completely covered in tatoos, nor chisel jaw dudes who have superior six packs on show, who happen to write great pop songs, shame eh?

In honor of their new record coming out today, "Impossible Germany", by Wilco. And, "1234" by Feist.

It's very cool, I think, though a lot of that has to do with the endlessly charming Feist. It doesn't hurt that she looks like Patti Smith, if Patti were, well, not so homely, and a bit younger.

It, the video, reminds me of some of Talking Heads artier video moments, in that it's an incredibly clever and creative use of relatively simple elements. Checking out her videos on YouTube, a lot of them are similarly witty and cool. The video for "Mushaboom", for instance, features flying toast, and a cameo by Peaches, who sadly, next to the flower that is Leslie Feist, looks like an onion.

"1234" is beyond cool. It reminds me of some of the free spirit aspects of Kate Bush's early/mid 80's video's. She even moves like Kate did.

David, is that the same Sweet old World as Emmylou? Haven't heard the Lucinda Williams one, but Emmylou's one breaks my heart every time. I could probably post this in the "Songs you can't listen to" thread also.

Catherine, it is indeed the same song that Lucinda penned. And it is indeed a heartbreaking song - supposedly based on real life events that happened in Lucinda's life.

Emmylou has covered other Lucinda tracks, as well, including notably, "Crescent City"...

Michael, funny you should mention that. Some person with waaaay too much free time altered Feist's vocals on "1234", changing the pitch, to where she sounds just like Kate Bush, and posted the results on YouTube.

If that's West, then yes - routinely acclaimed as another LW masterpiece here in Italy, but I find it a bit dreary, to be honest - too many retread tunes from previous albums & no really stand-out songs.

And getting back briefly to Akkerman: yes, Tabernacle was his first big solo album, Look Ma I'm an Artiste sort of thing, bit too much lute really. But he's produced a lot of great music over the years, and live he's wonderful - not just technique, speed and doodle, but melodic, witty and creative. Worth catching.

Thanks LK, did not know that... Must see if I can locate the Lucinda Williams version. I can't remember when I heard the Emmylou version first, but I always associate it with an ex of mine...

And favourite song of the week? If I can only pick one, it would have to be Providence - Jack Frost version. Up to now, I only had a version on a Steve Kilbey solo album, a glaring omission, which I corrected yesterday afternoon...

Leave me like you found me - Wilco.

Its genius from the 500 year old openings of Glenn's ride cymbal, to the soulful piano, to the phased 70's telecatser guitar backing, to Jeff, sorta chanting his soulful vocal style, with effortless display.

Wasn't he climbing the trees on Ghost is Born too?

A lovely instrumental break, reminiscent of some 70's English weird film about murderers, probably Michael Winner or similar.

Let me know if i am pissing you all off and i'l get me coat!!!

Her version is brilliant I agree. I didn't really get that song until now. I think I was put off by the sound of Street Legal. That coulda been a good album, but Bob didn't let the songs breathe, they got swamped in poor production etc. Some of the other covers I quite like Jerry, but COTG is the best.

There was a remastered version of Street Legal a couple of years back David and those who heard it say it was amazing. I was afraid to get it because I've always loved Street Legal anyway. I'll get it sometime though, no doubt.

By the way, David, Focus's "lead singer" - yodels and funny voices basically - after a dodgy & rather aimless solo career reformed the group with a bunch of youngsters and produced a surprisingly excellent 8th album. The group also apparently features in Sebastian Faulks's new novel as an example of how unreliable the main character's musical tastes are. So that's me telt.

Thanks Stuart. I'll keep an eye out for it. Must admit thier music doesn't do much for me now, just nostalgia for a time when I was hearing it for the first time, and did like Akkerman's guitar. Prog rock seems so ridiculous now, but still have all those Emerson, Lake & Palmer records.

Thanks Padriag. Mayb I gotta dud CD, cos I don'tlike the sound. Mayb its all those female backing singers repeating every line Bob sings. Senor is standout track, but hints of conversion throughout.

David, I don't think you're hearing things. The CD version of "Street Legal" I have sounds like crap, too - muddy, sodden, no fun to listen to at all. I've heard people say, like Padraig, that the new re-master is a big improvement. It'd have to be.

"prog rock seems so ridiculous now.."
That's true I guess, but growing up when I did, it was hard to avoid - there was a real battle at our school to be the first person - well, boy, of course, girls didn't listen to prog, they listened to "crap" like Bolan & Bowie! - to stroll around dead cool like with Tales of Topographic Oceans hitched under their armpit! (one reason why I loved Coe's The Rotter's Club).
But I think there is actually a lot of good music and many good tunes buried under the noodling in 70s prog...also, it's a bit more respectable to like it here in Italy, where the Floyd is still just about everyone's favourite foreign band!

Fave songs so far this week have been 'Bros' and 'Good Girl/Carrots' from Person Pitch by Panda Bear.

Must remember not to make sweeping statements. I listen to just about anything- prog or not. Still remeber the day I first heard "Dark Side Of Moon" on my "hi-fi" as we called it, and thought that nothin could be better tan that.

But rock needed reaction against it - when your 18 making music in your garage, u can't sound like Pink Floyd. So it actually disengaged most of my crowd, who actually wanna make music not just listen to it. Can now listen to most of it from a distance without all that baggage. Mayb all music's ike that. Anyway I'm gettin off the thread. Don't wanna be stranded on my own!!

Sugar - If I Can't Change Your Mind. Just noticed for the first time ever - and I've adored this song since I first heard it 15 years ago - that it is essentially a girl band song! It could easly have been produced by Phil Spector in the 60s and sung by three girls in mini-skirts! Has anyone else ever noticed this about this glorious song?

I noticed while washing the dishes if that's any help!

A Sigh - Crowded House. A thing of great beauty from their new album Time on Earth.

Impossible Germany - Wilco. Wonderful song. The guitar workout at the end is just terrific - sort of a cross between Television, The Allman Bros, and - umm Wishbone Ash - without ever sounding self-indulgent!

"I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby" - Alison Krauss

Begins with that rickety storytelling cliche, the mistaken identity. Gains some power from setting it within a fearful dream. Gains even more with a lovely melody and a typically incandescent vocal performance by Krauss. Doesn't completely escape the gravitational pull of the cliche at the center, but comes close enough that I'll settle.

Padraig, wanted to check in and second your praise of "If I Can't Change Your Mind." I think during a lot of his Sugar phase Mould was really going through a Beach Boys/Phil Spector/60s Pop kind of thing. The buzzsaw guitars can mask it a bit, but listen to some of those tunes and you can hear it's essentially classic pop on amphetamines.

AB, I enjoy your fresh and eclectic take on music, as well as your championing of artists that might not otherwise get a lot of play here. And, "incandescent" is exactly the word I'd use to describe the talented and purty Ms. Krauss. I have a buttload of discs by her, but I'm not sure I have that song. What disc is it off of?

Me, I'm currently fixated on a couple of songs about life in So Cal:

California - Joni Mitchell

Grey in L.A. - Loudon Wainwright III

LK, The disc I have the Alison song on is a mid-90s, not-a-bum-cut-on-it compilation called "Now That I've Found You: A Collection," but as it's a comp the song must be on some other album as well...I don't have it in front of me at the moment, unfortunately...

Just checked lyrics.com, as I couldn't put my hand on my Sugar CD - I see what you mean about "If I can't change your mind", Padraig! I love that song, and hell, if you're going to write what reads like a slushy pop song, then wrap it in raucous guitars, in a "this is how I feel, but if you don't agree, then f*** you!" kind of way!!

Be careful where else you mention the girl-band reference though, it could end up as the Pussycat Dolls' new single!!!

Rob,

I listened to that record a lot when I was going through my divorce. "My Town" really hit home as well, although like you said it's an entire album of standouts.

Check out the spine tingling version of Mendocino on YouTube. I don't have access to the link here at work or else I would post it.

NP Tracey Thorn - Out Of The Woods
For sure to make an appearance on my Top 10 for 2007.

XY, Daft belongs to the "Fave song of the second part of the 20th century" thread. When I start to listen I always end up repeating it at least 5 or 6 times. Same with Pink Frost...

Still sounds great Wolfgang as does that whole record. Now I feel like listening to Seamonsters, was gonne play all the Smiths records this Bank Holiday weekend, might try and squeeze in some Weddoes too now....

Wolfgang, do you have some special insider knowledge as to whether Baerbatov is going to Man Utd (judging from your username)?

“He is a player that fellow players admire. It was his first season and he deserves the accolades he's been given – now we're all looking FORWARD TO NEXT SEASON.” Thats what the Spurs website revealed some days ago.
ManU bought Mani, Anderson and Heargraves, when they still have 35 million Euros left, why not - I could imagine Dimitar fits well into a team with Cristiano and Mani.
But he's loyal and somewhat phlegmatic, as long as they don't offer a fortune he'll stay.
Btw. Some weeks ago the Bulgarian president opened an archeological exhibition in the museum right next to our shop. I was dressed in my Leverkusen Berbatov shirt and got a handshake and a smile. Good I haven't chosen a clove of garlic...

Laura Veirs - "Phantom Mountain"

Cool rocker from an underrated artist. Her new album "Saltbreakers" is quite impressive. I think it's better than the new Feist album, actually.

Mott the Hoople! Nice one Keith. What a superb band they were in their heyday. Those two tracks you mention are stand-outs - but I think my favourite Mott song is 'Roll Away the Stone' - an almost perfect pop record in every way.

I love that song, too, Mark. What album is that off of? I forget. I just have "Mott" and "All the Young Dudes", the title song of which they do a better job of than the actual writer, one Mr. Davey Jones...

Roll Away the Stone is on 'The Hoople' - the follow up album to 'Mott' on which Honaloochie Boogie and All the Way From Memphis appear. 'Mott' is the better album - although 'The Hoople' does have some great tracks.

Speaking of the Bowie connection - back in the early 90's I saw Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson together in concert at The Dominion theatre in London. Fantastic show - featuring a bunch of great Hoople and Ian Hunter solo songs. I think it was only about a year before Ronson died of cancer.

Mott was never quite the same after Mick Ralphs left--like Mark says, "The Hoople" has some good tracks, but doesn't hang together like the previous three Mott albums (including the proto-punk "Brain Capers"). Ariel Bender was not the right guitarist for the group, and by the time Ronson (briefly) joined Mott, the whole thing was falling apart. Great group, though, and it's gratifying to know Ian Hunter is still around and productive.

Ah yes..."The Hoople". Should pick that one up some time, if it can, indeed, be had. I've heard it's, at least, worthwhile.

The story and meaning behind (no pun intended) Ariel Bender's name is highly amusing. You gotta give them points for being such cheeky monkeys.

I have Ian Hunter's new solo record and it is, believe it or not, first rate. I don't believe Mr. Bender's on it, but Jeff Tweedy is.
