Having become a fan in 1989, I only got to see Robert and Grant play acoustically in 1992 (opener for Lloyd Cole) and 1999 (Best of promo tour.) As part of Tallulah mail list (does it still exist?) ages ago , I got a couple of great live recordings. Is there anywhere on the net or here that lists all their live recordings? I know of the following: 1984? - Live at Maxwell's 1989 - The Last Stand 1999 - Munich Radio Sessions (Tallulah list) 1999 - Live in Hamburg, Germany? (Tallulah list) And of course: 1987, 1989 - The Snap Sessions from the Best Of 2005 - Live from London 2006 - Live from Trivoli Does anyone know of any others? It'd be nice to have a comprehensive list with ratings similar to other bands like Dave Matthews Band, U2, etc. | ||

I wish they had some Robert Forster Warm Nights stuff out there. It seems to be the general consensus that the tour was better than the record. I'd like to hear them and judge for myself. There is a great 1986 Brisbane show out there. I believe the notes said it came from a tape made by Mr. Vickers himself. It is a great show and recorded well. It also has great songs on it (five words, bachelor, head full of steam, spring rain) and I love the punky energy. They seem a lot tighter too than the SNAP sessions. I need to re-assess my opinion of the band as a live outfit in the early days... | ||

Matthias, As I have said beforehand on another thread, listening to live recordings from 1986 of the G-Bs is (for me) in one sense futile: I was lucky enough to be in Australia in '86 and saw 2 dates in Melbourne, but my memories of the gigs have very little to do with 'technical' aspects of the group. They are to do with the feeling that was generated from the stage. Maybe I am being too precious. But I don't think that you can base an 'opinion of the band as a live outfit' on recordings, in the G-Bs case. Their concerts were always about much more than the music: it was about the way that Grant smiled at Robert if something went well, about Robert V virtually pogoing around while playing, about Lindy's ballgowns, about Amanda's smile... It was about the moment. | ||

Andrew, I concur and I remember our conversation on another thread (about the SNAP bonus disc being pretty sloppy technically.) Most live recordings are inadequate compared to the "you had to be there" experience factor. My point about the Brisbane 1986 show recorded by or for Robert Vickers is that it is pretty great and the band seemed tighter than my very limited exposure to other Mark I live stuff; AKA the SNAP sessions. I was impressed. Too bad there is precious little LIVE video of the pre-intermission Live Band (songs youtube stuff which at least gives a glimpse.) | ||

Matthias, Sorry my message looks really 'elitist'! Didn't mean like that. I recall a gig in '87 at the London Town + Country club, when there were certainly a couple of video cameras filming, but I have no idea under whose instruction. But it was a great gig, with Robert F doing his James Brown cape routine! Have to wonder if the footage still exists somewhere.... |
