I THOUGHT our British friends might ask the BBC to screen the Go-Bees doco recently shown on Australian television's ABC network.

I don't know if our US friends or our friends from other countries know any network which might play it.

I will explain the doco so anyone who wants to request a network to air it can identify it for the tele people.

In Brisbane, a tribute concert was organised at the Tivoli which is a Brisbane restaurant which specialises in live entertainment to go with their meals. Unfortunately, I did not even know the gig was on which is probably an admission an entertainment journo should not make.

Current Australian bands and soloists did Go-Betweens covers and the musos explained their choices. My only disappointment was no one did Twin Layers of Lightning, or if they did, the ABC doco did not show it.

The program gave a history of the band with archival footage and interviews with Robert Forster and Lindy Morrison.

It was shown at 11pm at night, but to the ABC's credit, the station did promote it heavily in the fortnight before the show.

I guess we viewers in Australia should thank the national network for the show, but I only thought about that while I was typing this.

What I would love to see would be for the BBC to shoot additional footage about the band in London and perhaps interview members of the band Madness who toured Australia with the Go-Bees in the 1980s.

In Brisbane, they played at Cloudland which was subsequently destroyed to make way for hilltop apartments.

That is one of the places Grant writes about in the Streets of Your Town where he says: ``they shut it down; they pulled it down’’. Another was the graceful historic Bellevue Hotel in central Brisbane.

Both these places were ripped down in the dead of night when the bandits of ``progress'' like to operate.

So what do people think: are we up for a bit of a campaign to have the doco aired as widely as possible?

You will love it.

Spread the News,
Bernie

Sounds like the kind of thing BBC4 might be interested in showing. They've been screening old editions of the Old Grey Whistle Test recently and there's often documentaries on bands and the history of various music genres. (I watched The Cars live in about 1978 last night - hmm, maybe I shouldn't admit to that?)
I guess whether it gets aired over here (UK) or not is down to legal issues, contracts etc. which is a shame.
Maybe ABC could consider marketing it straight to DVD?

Incidentallt I just ordered a copy of the Tribute album from JB hifi who are selling initial copies with an audio disc from the tribute show.

Me too. In fact Bye Bye Pride was outstanding. Nice to know all these musicians love the Go-Betweens music so much - and a shame I don't really know who they are.
A good watch all in all, and contains some old clips of the band and Robert Forster's views on proceedings too.

Good on you Matthew,
The reply is non-commital, but they are keeping records. I wonder if other people contacted the BBC, they would get the same response.
