I'm thrilled that my 9 year old requests this song to be played in the car. He has autism and so spends large parts of his time in other galaxies...but he appreciates the good Captain along with GB's, Bob Marley and Kraftwerk. You want eclectic...you got it !!

One of my favorites has always been "Tropical Hotdog Night" from "Shiny Beast." "Ice Cream for Crow" is a good album from what I remember, though I haven't heard it in years.

That's excellent, Wilson. Instill that good taste early! I have a friend whose two-year-old son is nuts for Steve Malkmus and the Holy Steady.

"Ice Cream for Crow" is great, Jeff. Definitely of a piece with "Shiny Beast" and "Doc at the Radar Station."

yep, as a beefheart lover i introduced my son to the captain's 'abba zabba' very early. and he liked it very much. but now it seems that he discovers his only taste. and the habit is ''opposite'', which i think is a good habit. btw: shiny beast is one of my all time fave album.

Though I can't remember what album it came off of, Wilson, "Big Eyed Beans from Venus" might appeal to your boy, too...

"Apes-Ma" would be a good story for kids: "Apes-ma, you're eating too much and going to the bathroom too much..."

Sounds like someone should put together a kids' comp. "Bedtime with Beefheart" anyone? He could be the new Dan Zanes.

Speaking of Beefheart, and Clock DVA (whom Spence and I were discussing on another thread), the singer from Clock DVA, Adi Newton, sounds amazingly like the bold Captain. Listening to the album Thirst just now and the likeness is uncanny. Maybe its just me, but I always thought Beefheart modelled his vocal style on Howlin Wolf, although his voice was not as boomy and cavernous as Wolf, that would be impossible.

Clock DVA...Hells teeth ? When I started work in Sheffield (1979-82)my job involved walking around the city delivering "by hand" mail, their flyers were pasted to every wall, along with Pulp. I always wondered what they sounded like. They also shared flyer space with Cabaret Voltaire, Comsat Angels, Human league etc. I'm painting avery sheffield early 80's picture here. We'd pile off to see Bunnymen, Teardrops, Orange Juice etc at places like the Sheffield polytechnic whose venue was "The Nelson Mandela Building"...was there ever a more "right-on" 1980's named venue than that ???

Wasn't every student union venue in the 80s renamed Nelson Mandela Hall/Building whatever? In retrospect this is a good thing though. If student unions were to rename buildings now it would be after some Big Brother winner.

I almost bought a Beefheart album the other day. I wish I had now. The shop was closing (for good)and it was only $7. My arm was already full of other $7 discs though. But one more wouldn't have left the mortgage unpaid...
