Bush commuted Scootie's jail time. What a shocker! I guess he was afraid of the book Scoots would write if he didn't.

That's alright, in a way I'm really glad. Just another nail in the coffin of his so-called Presidency and one of the myriad reasons the corruption and scumminess of his administration will echo down the halls of history.

Really, man, it's gotten to a level absurdity even I - cynical bastard that I am - couldn't have imagined. I have nothing clever to say about it. Except that if this SOB gets the Reagan whitewash treatment somewhere down the line, I'm going to be there with a power washer.

This is the same George Bush who presided over a record number of executions while governor of Texas and was notorious for turning a deaf ear to pleas for clemency or stays of execution.

Those executed during his watch included the mentally retarded Terry Washington, and Gerald Mitchell who was 17 at the time he committed his crime - even though the use of the death penalty against anyone under 18 at the time of the crime is prohibited under international law.

Now suddenly George W is discovering the virtues of compassion and clemency. But only for his frat-boy buddies.

No offence to the American people here, as you all seem to be politically aware and sane, but will the rest of America vote in anything better?

I think not.

Ronald Ray-gun, B grade actor, z grade president got in for 2 terms. Then Bush senior who denied that climate change was happening, then his "Born-again" son for 2 terms....Jeez!!!!! Even the Democrat in the middle couldn't stop power from corrupting him!!!

Australia meantime gets 11 years of Howard whos radically slashing workers rights hard won over 100 years.

What hope has "the free world" got?
What hope has the world got full stop with people who don't see themselves as citizens of the world?
Maybe the democrats can get in and start to redraw the distinction between Church and state in American society - that might make a difference.
I would suggest that a more centralised education system might go a long way to getting rid of creationism, no gun control, no health care safety net and other ridiculous nonsense that seems to have come to underpin American society - but then again I'm a science teacher - what would I know!
Is there anyone with the vision to get the world through climate change, post peak oil and a ballooning human population gobbling up resources?
I hope so.

Rob, it isn't "if" he's going to get the whitewash treatment, but when. So you should probably get that pressure washer ready. Or maybe a flame thrower. Or (thank you Mr. Cockburn) a rocket launcher. Yeah, there you go...

I feel slightly embarrassed (and am about to admit it to the whole board). When I first saw the title of this thread my first thought was that it was going to be about that stupid book. Then I remembered where that stupid book stole its name from...

My only surprise at the news was that it took him a month to do so.
