Target, my friend - it's where America shops.

They had it, unbelievably, for $7.98, as they did the new Spoon. Don't know about you, but that's the price point where I lose all resistance. There's your answer to all of the record companies' woes: immediately reduce all CDs to 8 bucks, or less. They would all be solvent tomorrow...

And, if you're open to their sound, which I'm guessing you are, you big xenophile, it's really good. Raucous and life-affirming - it makes you want to dance around the living room like Borat...

A friend of mine who's not usually much of a music guy - at least not much a new music guy - got into them years ago, I think because of the theatrical aspects of their performances. He'd been extolling them - endlessly - for a long time, so I finally took the plunge on the last album. Lo and behold, he was right! I'll definitely pick up the new one.

CDs at Target, eh? Honestly, I thought they just carried the chart-toppers. Eight bucks is definitely within the Brookman Budget Parameters.

Mainly because there's one here, like, every block (seriously), I end up shopping a lot at Tarjay - let's face it, they have everything. Why not? All of the stuff they carry is decent, the same merchandise they'd have at the Gap or Ikea, or wherever. It's all made in Singapore, or wherever...

But anyways, I noticed that they have a rack with all of the hipster stuff that I guess they think all of the happenin' kids will buy (probably not targeting that GBs board demographic, though). Usually, it's full of emo shit, but it will also feature stuff like the Arcarde Fire and the Shins. Still and all, Gogol Bordello seems like a stretch...

Supposedly, Gogol Bordello really bring it live. The guy from Fountains of Wayne has a very amusing "from the road" blog on the Onion's AV club, and he talks about how daunting it was to follow them at Bonnaroo. They have a huge ensemble on stage, apparently including a lot of scantily clad, fetching girls, which obviously never hurts.

Padraig,

Soft Bomb is a perfect pop album, stem to stern! It's been in my car cd changer now for the last three months! For some reason though it won't play on my pc at work, but I blast it on the way home. I didn't think they could top Submarine Bells, so it took me eons to buy Soft Bomb. Little did I realize how wrong I was, which is nothing against the excellant Submarine Bells.

Hi Spence - yup, that's the one. I wouldn't say I'm a huge fIREHOSE fan, but I love that song (and I love the Minutemen). I hadn't heard "Brave Captain" myself in eons; it falls under the "rediscovered pop gem" category for sure.

"Brave Captain"--which album is that on? I think I still have the first three fIREHOSE albums but I haven't thought about them in at least 10 years. They were really great live--the records always seemed a little tame in comparison.

Cranes - Paris and Rome

I've been on a Cranes buying spree lately. It's nice to have a shoegazer band still active.

Kurt, "Brave Captain" is the first track on "Ragin' Full On." I always felt their records could be a bit unfocused and erratic, but each one had at least a few gems. I hadn't thought about them in years either, but I stumbled on the video for "Brave Captain" on youtube and seeing that immediately transported me back to the mid-to-late 80s when I used to see that on 120 mins.

Michael, I supported The Cranes in '92 I think at the TicToc club in Coventry. They were the most contrived bunch of miserable bastards, I think they are still going. Jason from Spacemen 3/Spiriualised was there, he saw our set and I spotted him clapping, that was good!

Gonna buy Firehose tonight if its on iTunes. Thanks chaps.

Spence, so The Cranes were worse then a bunch of knotheads? Too bad. I always liked Allison's little girl voice, an interesting contrast to what the band was playing.

Cudos to you for getting claps from Jason!

Michael, they weren't really my cup of tea, Cure wannabees, the guys in the band couldn't walk due t o the tightness of their leather tousers! For me, the Cranes were no different to say Garbage, a real waste of time. Mind you, my band at the time looked like the Scottish band Gun, which was not so clever!!

'Twin Layers of Lightning' - I am trying to figure out that gorgeous, nebulous bass passage just before the guitar solo and towards the end of the song. Wow...

E -- E -- E C# B C# E B? C#? E
F# F# F # D# C# D# F#....

I love how it wanders around nebulously, you can get tangled up in it somehow, but it would be so rewarding to do right.

Honorary favorite song of the week - Robert Forster, Boundary Rider. Can't thank him enough for how good that is even to think about.

Elizabeth, what a word, 'nebulous'!!!! Wow!

What a great song that is. Its got to be one of the best songs ever written by anybody. Musically the guitars sound electric and the vibes and the whole feel, it feels very very English.

Yes, a great word.

I hope the Trekkies don't take it over. I can picture it now: "Hey, did you see the new Star Trek movie"? "Yeah, It's nebulous"!

Two songs about unlikely objects of affection:

Monday Morning Rock - Marshall Crenshaw. A song celebrating the weekend, and all the attendant partying, being over. The protagonist is actually happy to go back to work.

Guitar - Prince. Self-explanatory, I think. He may have copped this riff from the Edge, but he makes EXCELLENT use of it.

Indeed, joe...the way the music and voices do that slow surge up to the climax at the end of a verse, (combined with the beauty of the melody, of course) is quite moving.
