Frank, I'm a very new convert to Ms Jones, solely based on a comment LK made about her on one of the "whatcha listening to" threads.

Quote: "Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings - 100 Days, 100 Nights. Great gosh a-mighty, what a funky record - it just jumps out of the speakers. They better not play this near wherever James Brown is buried. It's liable to make him get on up and dance... "

When you read something like that, you've just got to investigate!

I got “Naturally” about 2 weeks ago and love it. She’s just amazing funky soul, and feisty!. Even when she’s singing one of those my-man-done-me-wrong type songs, you know she’s not going to pine for that fool for too long!

If you have even a passing interest in this kind of music, I highly recommend checking her out…

Highly recommended, Frank. Incredibly funky, smoky, soulful singing - hard to pin her voice down, but it's somewhere between, say Gladys Knight and Aretha. And the horn section, the Daptone Horns, are incredible. The only touchstone to compare them to is James Brown's old horn section - very funky, very intricate arrangements. You, in fact, have probably heard them, because they're apparently one of the most sought after session ensembles. They're all over that Amy Winehouse record, and a lot of the Mark Ronson-produced stuff, including that great remix of the Dylan song.

Hey LK, I knew you'd describe her way better than I ever could!

Damn, this sounds good--thanks for the recommendation, LK and Catherine. Maybe many of y'all are sick of Mark Ronson's production, but I think his sound is refreshing change from the usual suspects who've been dominating dance/urban contemporary/whatever music for years. Human rhythm sections are ALWAYS going to be funkier than drum machines or samples. I was fearing funky drumming had become a lost art.

Hey good music is good music...

Catherine, did you get "100 Days" yet? I don't know if they have the same version over there, but my copy came with a sampler of artists from the "Daptone" label (I love that they've made a whole cottage industry out of Daptone mania), all of them funky as hell.

Didn't get it yet, but I'm ordering it this evening - it's payday. I'll probably order it through their website instead of amazon if there is a sampler - My local record shop don't have it yet, and I've a feeling I'd need to make a special order with them.

I had a listen to some 30-second samples of it last night, and loved what I heard...

The sampler, in case this whets your appetite any further, is titled, "Binky Griptite's GhettoFunkPowerHour".

Even the name is funky!!

Tried to order through the Daptones website, but they seem to be out of the CD. I don't have a turntable at the minute, so If I get vinyl, I won't be able to listen to it..
