It's a great, if very snide, pop song. |

Just want to be myself But it all sounds like someone else Everytime i play Here comes that musical cliché And it gets from bad to worse Round the time of the second verse Heres a great song i wrote So good it doesn't rhyme Want be like Robert Forster and rock and roll from heaven But the songs i write in the middle of the night make me sound like Grant McLennan Don't wanna be Grant McLennan Don't wanna be Grant McLennan Paul McCartney Ringo Starr George Harrison and John Lennon Don't wanna be Grant McLennan Don't wanna be Grant McLennan Don't wanna be And the song has slowed down a pace Got this pained expression on my face Easy come easy go Cos’ i want you to know That i didn't know someone could be so lonesome Didn't know a person could give off so much emotion Want to be like Robert Forster and rock and roll from heaven But the songs i write in the middle of the night make me sound like Grant McLennan Don't wanna be Grant McLennan Don't wanna be Grant McLennan Paul McCartney Ringo Starr George Harrison and John Lennon Don't wanna be Grant McLennan Don't wanna be Grant McLennan Don't wanna be |

When it came out I asked Grant what he thought, his response was "I don't want to be Grant McLennan either!" |

It's a sort of homage, really, isn't it, more than a piss-take? I hope to hear the actual tune, one day, too. |

The 7" of Don't Want To Be Grant McLennan was the first music I ever bought in Australia. It was in January 1992 in the (now long gone) Virgin record shop in Bourke St, Melbourne, the morning after I arrived in the country. I had read a review of the single in the Melody Maker shortly before heading off on my great adventure down under. Later that day I also bought albums by Ed Kuepper, The 'Aints and The Saints based on other rave reviews in the Melody Maker (Ed's Honey Steel's Gold and The 'Aints Ascension albums were reviewed and The Saints were referenced in the piece). |
