Anyone catch SBS Sat night Classic Australian Albums. They featured the Triffids "Born Sandy Devotional" Great early footage of adolescent years in Perth and early gigs. Interesting interview/comments from Amanda Brown and Robert F about hanging out with Triffids in London in about 83 I think(?) Robert said they opened for the GBs on the occasion of their (the Triffids) first gig in London and how they were better than the Gbs on that night (in Robert's opinion).

The show gave an insight into David McCombs songwriting and his recording methods and his ability to capture the landscape (physical and emotional) in his songs.

Did anyone else see this program?

This Saturday they do the Saints Stranded.

I saw it and thought it was brilliant David. It is being released on DVD very soon ("sources close to the producers" have told me!).

Wow, I look forward to that DVD.

For that matter I'm still hoping for a CD release of the Triffids' early (pre-Treeless Plain) recordings.

Yep - it was a great doco. The RF appearance was an unexpected bonus. Pádraig, re the DVD.. is it going to be one DVD for the whole series (4 albums) or one DVD per album?

That was a great doco. It was great to see the album being authoritatively examined by Steve Kilbey, Paul Kelly, our Robert, Alsy McDonald, Jill Birt and "Evil" Graham Lee.
I remember where I was when I was listening to the J's and heard of David McCombs death and thinking instantly that it MUST have been heroin.
A mate of mine, who has become a David McComb tragic after I introduced him to the Triffids, has trolled many Triffids chatrooms for rare mp3s and never found any evidence for a chemical demise. I felt somewhat vindicated when after all this time - 8 years - it finally was admitted that David McComb's death was due to heroin at the very end of the doco.
F***CKING wretched stuff!!!!!

Randy, there are some more planned releases of Triffid LPs.I was looking on the website last night and it seems Treeless Plain and some of the early EPs are up for remastering, also Black Swan I think and some talk of a live LP ( Stockholm).

Mark, one for each program AFAIK.

Frank, that live album isn't very good. Well, it's far more than a decade since I played it, but I didn't used to like it anyway. I only have it on (bought) cassette.

It passed me by I must say, I was not so keen on Black Swan at the time and kind of veered away from the Triffids, but if they could get a live recording from around BSD/Calenture that would be something.I saw them in London at the Euston Theatre (I think) and they were really on top form.

Geoff wrote this about heroin:
>F***CKING wretched stuff!!!!!

Amen. It caused a lot of premature deaths in the jazz world, then later the rock world.

I just finished reading Skydog: The Duane Allman Story. Duane used to snort H like it was going out of style, and got Clapton hooked on it while they were recording Layla. Duane was adament about not shooting it up, and not allowing others in the ABBB to do so. He and a couple other members of the ABB and a couple of roadies went to a clinic in upstate New York and kicked the habbit in October of 1971. Duane had less than a month to live in the straight world before his motorcycle accident. The book did not id the other band members or roadies.

Just saw an ad for all of the videos in the series - Woodface, I'm Stranded, Neon Ballroom (BAAAARRFFFFF!!!!!) and Born Sandy Devotional, for $21.99 each at JB Hi Fi after having just walked out of the place spending too much money as it was!

I recorded BSD and Stranded onto one DVD Geoff, but if they have decent extras I'll buy the proper DVDs.

Was that pre-order or are they available now, Geoff? I really must google this Neon Ballroom, to see what warranted such an understated response!!

i don't care for silverchair at all, but i quite liked neon ballroom when it came out. certainly made the singles chart a bit more interesting for a few months. emotion sickness is rather epic, for the 'chair anyway.

Catherine, the ad I saw said they were available now...I think - it's been recycled! JB Hi Fi have a website (try googling) with an ordering system if the UK hasn't released them yet.
Neon Ballroom was I think when Nirvana in Pajamas..sorry, silverchair's (lowercase "s") Daniel Johns discovered Brian Wilson and hired Van Dyke Parks to score some of the strings. Good intentions, but he's got NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO tunes!!!! It's really SAD!!! While I'm on it, the new silverchair album was released to much fanfare here with him sprouting on about how he thinks bits of it sound like the Jam or Revolver period Beatles. GET OFF THE DISSOCIATIVES!!!!! Sadly, too, it is crap....ALRIGHT I'LL STOP NOW!!!

Geoff, I've already tried JBHifi and Redeye but nothing's coming up as yet.
Love the Nirvana in Pajamas crack - somehow I don't think I'll be bothering adding silverchair to my "must get their music" file!
