You know those singles that have like B-sides that are better than like the A-side. Here's a few:

New Order - 1963
Them - Gloria
The Jam - Dreams Of Children
Nick Cave - The Ballad Of Robert Moore & Betty Coltrane
Siouxsie & The Banshees - Love In A Void
Rolling Stones - Child Of The Moon & Ruby Tuesday
Morrissey - The Girl Least Likely To

Jesus Said - Lloyd Cole & The Commotions, B-Side to My Bag.

Girl Least Likely To is great Jerry, wasn't that about Lindy, Morrissey's old 'flame'...? Other B-Sides by him I like are The Loop and some from the very early solo singles like Oh Well I'll Never Learn and Disappointed.

The Ghost Town 7" has two great B-Sides, Why and Friday Night, Sunday Morning.

The Wedding Present have heaps of great B-sides from their 12"s, but my favourite is Crawl from the Corduroy EP.

Beatles - Rain

Although I like Paperback Writer, Rain beats the snot out of it and also has the first backwards part in a song.

"Child of the Moon" beats "Jumpin' Jack Flash?" Hmmm.

What was "Gloria" the b to? "Here Comes the Night" or "Baby, Please Don't Go?" (I used to know this trivia but well . . . let's just say it's buried underneath too much other stuff). "Baby, Please Don't Go" beats "Gloria" imo but "Gloria" certainly beats "Here Comes the Night."

What was "Rock 'n Roll Friend" a b-side to? Whatever it was, the Forster song is better.

Singles don't happen any more, do they?

"How soon is now" was a b-side (of "William..."?) before the song was released as a single, I think.

The Smiths had some fantastic b-sides! And Morrissey does the same, with songs like "Disappointed", "Jack the Ripper" etc.

Hairdresser on fire too, TROU. Personally I don't actually like How Soon Is Now as much as William... HSIN is the only song from The Smiths that is a little bit long. Probably my own fault where I obsessed over it so much as a teenager & stuck it on every compilation tape I made.

Randy, I love Child Of The Moon even more than JJF, imho that's a reflection of it's strength.
Gloria was b-side to Baby, Please Don't Go, which as side A is a cover, I figure side B it's superior.

A few more:

New Order - Mesh
Bunnymen - Angels & Devils
The Who - Heaven & Hell

Trou, Smiths b sides were teriffic, so glad when Louder than Bombs and World won't listen were issued way back.

Jerry, I used to adore NO's 1963, like Kraftwerk.

There were some great b sides double AA sides weren't there!?

The Clash - Mikey Dread's UK tour song (Bankrobber)
XTC - Dear God (Grass)
Bunnymen - B side of Never Stop was a classic. Forgot its title.

XY adored the ghost town b sides too, when used to go home for lunch sometimes from school, i used to run home so i could play it continually on my sister's stereo whilst eating my cheese sandwiches!!

Orange Juice - poor old Sould part 2 I always favoured over the a

Bourgie Bourgie - Apres Ski

Spence, the b side to Never Stop was Heads Will Roll

Always thought The Bunnymens Do It Clean was a superior song to its A Side - The Puppet

Yeah, Never Stop 12" had an inferior early version of The Cutter too. The Puppet was a carbuncle in The Bunnymen's early history. :-)

Kev, nice one, Heads, what a great guitar break/riff (Jeff take a listen!)
The Bunnymen had balls, and Defreitas, what a drummer. Do it clean on the b side of killing moon was effin awesome, unbelievable, a long version without the jim kerr pomp.

In my haste to respond to this thread I mistook it for great B-Sides as opposed to ones that were better than the A-Sides, ah well.

Strawberry Fileds Forever/Penny Lane, double A-side that it is, has to be mentioned here.

Further to the chat about the Smiths, their last recorded original, I Keep Mine Hidden, B-Side to Girlfriend In A Coma is excellent and another glimpse of where they were heading musically during the Strangeways era...such a shame they split then...

Oh, and me XY!

On the Girlfriend bside, I hated nae detested that I keep mine hidden, felty it was so sub standard, however I adore Work is a 4 letter word cover, a perfect pop song (IMHO)

Rain - obvious brilliance, one of my all time favourite songs no less.
Dreams of Children - more backwards bits...sounds like a trend...
Angels and Devils - How groovy is that song! One of my fave Bunnymen songs.
I agree with Spence about I keep mine hidden. Predictable, worn out and cliched. The Smiths should have stopped an album before. I'd much rather have Sweet and Tender Hooligan - at least that's funny.

Spence, are you talking about the Echo ep with the "all night" version of killing moon that had the long of clean on the b side? That's a great ep, right up there with the Let's Active and Rain Parade ep's and almost up to Chronic Town.

Talking of Bunnymen. They're due to play the Albert Hall again next summer. Performing Ocean Rain with a full orchestra & possibly 'that' version of Do It Clean. This seems to be a policy for the old bands who are perhaps past their best. I still quite like their recent work but Mac can't sing like he used to. He's quite lazy with his voice these days.

Spence, I wonder if it is? I should get my turntable running next month, and then I'll start making cd-r's.

Is there some sofware that I need to eliminate clicks and pops from vinyl albums when I make cd-r's from them?

Mate, if you buy a turntable called ION USB http://www.guardianoffers.co.uk/mall/pro ductpage.cfm/GuardianOffers/_TRUTURNTABL E
Its fantastic and you get some great software with it. Most of the time though you don't really need to elimainate the carckles too much, i recorded a 40 year old piece of vinyl and it sounds great. The more cracks youhide the more the sound fluctuates from the original vinyl sound. the software is the best I have come across.

That's the model I have as well Spence, super quality from it. Audacity is the software with it. even does 78s!!!...Can you connect up old tapes?? for some reason the jack (1/8") on mine won't fit...You could even use it as your standard turntable though I have another one in use, a Project.

-Rock 'n Roll Friend + Mexican Postcard are both easily superior to their a-side, Was There Anything I Could Do.

-When People are Dead

-Karen

Microdisney - Harmony Time, b-side to Birthday Girl

And I agree - Smiths b-sides were awesome, but so were their a-sides.

I hardly ever bought singles, but, maybe my first GoBs buy in fact, I seem to remember picking up Right here, which always vaguely iritated me, and it had When people are dead on the b-side, which I thought was tremendous and convinced me I'd found an interesting group.

Also loved that Sandie Shaw tribute to Morrissey that she bsided Heartbroken with.

....and Ride had a couple of corkers too:
"At the end of the Universe"(flipside to How does it feel to feel), "Don't let it Die"(flipside to Birdman), Howard Hughes & Stampede(flips to "Twisterella"). Always loved the mix of "Theme for Great Cities" on the flip of "Promised You a Miracle" by Simple Minds too.

10:15 Saturday Night is a good call, Killing An Arab is equally essential though.

...and I thought I was the Beatles "fetishist" here! That takes the cake and blows my mind Spence to think that you have the Ringo single holed up, lost, in the realms of your music collection!

Funny thing was Geoff, I think it is signed, I met him when I was young. I am going to give it to a guy who's a Beatles freak, he produce some music with me recently. A guy who played lap steel on my group's new album, supported them in mid 60's too, he always said Ringo was the nicest, though he said they were all nice to him and his band.

Mac sounds like Neil Diamond now !

Heads will roll when played live in 83 was awesome... the intro and the extended solo with Mac doing the "whipcrack away whipcrack away" vocal. I have a boot of the Albert Hall July 83 gig on tape and all the "new" songs blinded their final vinyl versions. They were the coolest band I ever saw, not the best, but definately the coolest and Mac knew that...hence the MASSIVE self belief..
