Pinch - Underwater Dancehall. The latest great album from the UK Dubstep scene. This is like Blue Lines by Massive Attack done in a Pere Ubu style - yes that good.

Disrupt - Foundation Bit. More Dubstep, but this is more like King Tubby.

Robert Wyatt - Comicopera. At this moment in time my album of the year.

Ray Davies - Workingman's Cafe

Jens Lekman - Night Falls Over Kortedela. His best yet, I think, but does anyone know why he's so f-ing happy over getting a haircut on the cover?

The Panics - Cruel Guards. Okay, though it lapses into saminess about halfway through. The singer's a dead ringer, vocally speaking, for Dean Wareham, of Luna. Has anyone ever seen them in the same room together?

I remember in the early 80s hearing tell of a band named The Very Idea of Fucking Hitler. Just now Googled them and found the following list of similar such names:

Enjoy.

Watusi - The Wedding Present
69 Love Songs - Magnetic Fields. Hadn't played this in quite a while, forgot what a classic record this is. There must be about 35 incredible songs on this record.

LK,

The Monk and Coltrane thing was one of the great finds in music. It was burried in the Library of Congress for almost 50 years until the tapes were found in 2004. Kudos to the unknown recording engineering who had microphones on all four musicians instead of just placing a single mic above the whole group, which was more the norm in those days.

On the way home from visiting my parents:

Ed Kuepper -- Jean Lee & the Yellow Dog. Making no records for 7 years really suited Ed. This is a strong, intense and disturbing album. His poignant cover of "Finding You" fits right in with all of the unsettling originals. And he has really tied together the things he learned from his instrumental music sound experiments with his r 'n r songwriter prowess.
Panics -- Sleeps Like a Curse. Still a good record. Rocking Horse has informed me that my bulk order of nearly everything Panics is on its way.
Ashtray Boy -- The King's Buccaneer. I looked up "Esky" and now I have a better picture of what "Wild Esky" is about. That white and blue speckled foam!
Caroline Trettine -- Ten Light Years. Always thanks to Spence. Someday I'll find an official original copy of this.
and some of my stuff. That rental car had a good sound system; it gave me lots of helpful feedback for remixing.

The Little desert - Not Drowning Waving.

Their best album(?) FINALLY on CD after being deleted over a decade ago.

Seven Seven.

Album of the year that I've heard so far.
All is forgiven for Venus traps flys being boring.
Machine Translations play the nearby Wombarra Bowling club(!) with a string of others on November 15th. J Walker (Greg actually...) used to live here in the Northern Illawarra and returns to play gigs every tour, usually at local Bowling Clubs.
The night before, The Panics play the Oxford in the Gong.
I'm very, very happy......

LK, the guy from The Panics does sound quite like Dean Wareham, you're right. He also sounds quite like Tim Freedman from The Whitlams (which is what I should have written above, but mixed him up with David Bridie!).

The Panics - Cruel Guards. I'm really enjoying this already after a mere two listens. The middle third of the record is coming out as favourite so far. Don't Fight It, on very first listen caught my attention. There's an understated lushness to the whole album, which could stand multiple listens.

I'll mention here that it already would be an early contender for a favourite of the year. (I'm a bit wary about posting in that thread at the minute, for fear I get caught in the crossfire!)

Agree Catherine. Just bought Cruel Guards. Continual play on car CD player to work and back and in gridlock on Ipswich Rd (which both Howard and Rudd have promised a few billion to fix/bypass etc and is a big election issue here bigger than climate change or health or education or industrial relations to local residents apparently! well the traffic is bad ) I have fallen in love with this album. New top of list for album of year. and instant classic!

Two Gallants - Two Gallants I'm a bit slow getting into this, but that's probably because I've been blissing out on The Panics and Augie March. This one is a whole lot sparser.

Martin Stephenson and the Daintees - Boat to Bolivia, remastered. Am loving this, as I would've bought it way back then, but was a kid with no money. As much as I love it, I've avoided listening to Rain yet, as it's not (raining).

Last night: Gaslight Radio--Hitch on the Leaves

This morning: Panics--Crack in the Wall. This 2004 release is about 3/4 of an album with seven tracks and running 30 minutes. It's simpler than "Sleeps Like a Curse" since it's not produced by Tim Whitten. However, it is again a lovely record with a more subtle appeal.

I'm glad that you are enjoying Cruel Guards, Catherine. I'm still waiting for my copy but the two things I have now leave me pretty confident that I'll be satisfied when everything shows up.

Catherine I didn't know The Daintees had been remastered, it needed it. I saw them nay times in the 80's. Martin used to have us screaming out loud with stuff, especially this tune called Louis, I think it can be found on the back of Crocodile Cryer 12'', where it goes on for 10 minutes and Martin tells a really a pathetic story!
Those wer the days where I remember being young and exited by groups like The Daintees and you could play pool with them befroe they went on! I remember being thrashed at pinball by Ant Dunn the bassist at Wolves Compton Poly in '86! Try doing that with Klaxons before they go on!!!

Walkin' on the moon - Tom Russell, but not his version. This is a regular in my brother's set. My 21 month old niece loves this song, but she thinks my brother actually goes walking on the moon, when he disappears off to play a gig! She has reccently announced that when she is a big girl, she's going to walk on the moon with her daddy..

Catherine, you must have played "Rain" over the weekend! Are there any extra tracks with the "Boat To Bolivia" reissue?
I saw the Daintees play lots in the early ninetys Spence, they were good night out, particularly when they brought along the Hot Lick Cookies and Gypsy Dave.
MS is still releasing records and living in a remote part of Scotland I believe, he's a top guitar picker himself, especially blues and ragtime.

Speaking of Martin Stephenson, I absolutely LOVE that song Trouble Town, but can't find it anywhere. I mean, I have an mp3 of it somewhere on the 'puter, but I'd love to find the original 12" or something. I don't think it was ever released on anything else.

Boat to Bolivia is an eclectic album, but contains some great tracks.

I gave in last night, on my way home from visiting my family, and played it probably 4 times in a row! Still not raining, but it suited where my head was at. I've seen MS play solo a few times in the past few years, always a very mellow experience. The last time, he played Rain in complete darkness, other than the red dot of light from the monitor - absolute heaven!

The re-issue is a two-disc, with 12 extra tracks - I think it's only very newly released.

Disc: 1
1. Crocodile Cryer
2. Coleen
3. Little Red Bottle
4. Tribute to the Late ReverendGary Davis
5. Running Water
6. Candle in the Middle
7. Piece of the Cake
8. Look Down Look Down
9. Slow Lovin'
10. Caroline
11. Rain
12. Boat to Bolivia
Disc: 2
1. Wholly Humble Heart
2. Spoke in the Wheel
3. Left Us to Burn
4. Nancy
5. We Are Storm
6. Salutation Road
7. Big Sky New Light
8. The Boys Heart
9. We Can Roll
10. Neon Skies
11. Sunday Halo
12. Cab Attack

I'm off for another listen!

Cruel Guards--Panics

My Rocking Horse Care Package arrived today. I've already listened to everything, that's 2 albums and 3 eps, once. The new album sounds great and enormous, except for the obtrusively bad lyrics on what must be the radio-plug song "Don't Fight It." (That one could be by Destiny's Child!) The older recordings inevitably sound much less lush and--in my universe--that's generally a good thing. "Kid, You're a Dreamer" from the first LP (and also the 3d ep) sounds like a classic to me on the basis of two listens.

I have Wilco on heavy rotation at the moment in preparation for one of the mid November Dublin gigs. Been listening to SBS a lot, same verdict, I like it though there are some songs in there that ain't too strong.

I've also been listening to the YHF demos, I think I have about 5 versions of Kamera now, the one from the YHF bonus disc is my favourite, really really loud with great distortion.

There's also some other stuff that has never been released on these discs and it would easily equal most of what's on SBS, like Shaking Sugar/Alone...I'd say they are going to delve mush deeper into their back catalogue for this gig than they have been in recent years...

Wussy - "Left for Dead" Maybe not quite as wondeful as "Funeral Dress," one of the great, overlooked records of the '00s, but a worthy follow up. I'd like a little more Chuck Cleaver, but this collaboration is shaping up to be every bit the band the Ass Ponys were. Now if they'd just freakin' TOUR.

I've been playing that M.I.A. album a lot lately, Kev. It's like a strong cup of coffee. Actually, it's like four strong cups of coffee. It engages my nervous system like nothing else I've bought this year. Needless to say, I don't put it on anywhere near bedtime.

You don't like the Church, Kevin, do you? I suspect a taste for 80s Church helps a lot when it comes to the Panics.

I can send you a few other things of theirs and you can decide if they just won't happen.

Dazed and Confused - soundtrack

An excellent tour of a disreputable sub-sub-genre: all the 70s hardrockwhitebluesmetalpop trash a casual admirer could want, All On One Stereo CD. With only one bad cut, Nazareth's terrifying slaughter of "Love Hurts."

Lightnin Hopkins - Flash Lightnin - blues master at his electric best
Wilco - Sky Blue Sky - still a great 5 song EP, although not in the same league as Chronic Town obviously!!
Burial - Untrue - Somebody still pushing the boundaries.

Allen, it's a toss-up for me as which song is the greatest sin, Nazareth's terrifying slaughter of "Love Hurts" or ten years later Starships "We Built This City". Either one causes the bile to rise to ones throat in a vomit reflex.

Listened to Burial's "Untrue" for the first time last night on foot of Kevin's recommendation, it was dark and rainy coming out of Dublin and this soundtracked the trip perfectly. Reminded me a little of Troublemakers and DJ Shadow on first listen, if it complements the aforementioned elements so well I suspect I'm going to be listening to it a lot more this winter!
I've gotten a few more electronic albums this year than previous ones, Simian Mobile Disco, Digitalism, Justice, Cut Chemist, Matthew Dear and the one I played most, The Field's "From Here We Go Sublime" I found a lot of the above to be inventive, inspirational, hypnotic releases.

Beachfield album.

its very good. Its bright and hummable. If it had radio play over here I'd dig it. I've had a copy now for about 4 weeks and its a real pop gem. It'd be a shame if it sinks into the sale bin vaults.

I've got the Justice record, Peter. It must be getting older that does it, because cutting edge dance music leaves me cold now. I listen to something new & all I get is a longing for older, better days. I blame Daft Punk & Air because they sound like pure muzak & much of pop has followed suit.

The Abyssinians - Satta Massagana Deluxe Edition
The Panics - Cruel Guards (Randy, Ive not given up on them just yet!)

So - LK, whats the verdict on The Avett Brothers? I've heard the name dropped, so I gave them a listen on Napster - seems a bit mainstreamy but theres something interesting there that I cant quite put my finger on. I am guessing you have heard them and have an opinion?

Trojan Dub box set.
Like being transported back to 1978. In the kitchen, me and my pal scoff fish fingers, chips and baked beans together, whilst occasionally looking up at his mum's kitchen ceiing everytime there's a boom and the ceiling light rattles down some flakes of led paint on us, due to the ferocity of the 5k watt bass cabs blasting some good big ol dub out da speakers!!!

it's been a while, but there's some good stuff on the red shoes. rubberband girl is good fun and there's another one i particulary love....i think it's the song of solomon. i know i'd know it as soon as i hear it! there's a lyric like "don't want your bullshit, just want your sexuality" which she delivers without an ounce of tack/irony.

I'm getting a kick out of Jeff's momentary regression.

Tonight:
Straitjacket Fits -- Melt. Very briefly. It sounds like badly produced crap. Screw Gavin MacKillop. I'll try it another time when I'm in a more patient mood.
Then:
Dana Gillespie -- Foolish Seasons. 1968 vintage British psych dolly bird pop. Very entertaining at its best.
Straitjacket Fits -- Hail. I think this is my third listen to this album, which is vastly superior to Melt.
Panics -- Give Me Some Good Luck. I've been meaning to get back to the EPs.

Very very taken with sigur ros at the moment, the acoustic tracks on Hvarf Heim especially - quite Nymanish, maybe too much so in the slightly relentless piano led intro, but then a massive, beautiful sequence of tracks which really takes the breath away: there's a Gaelic sound to the language, too, though whether Icelandic has anything in common with it I wouldn't know. Entrancing stuff.

Hey Randy, I think you might just appreciate this...was in a little hipster used-book-and-CD store here in town today. Picked up an Arto Lindsay CD for $2 and took it to the counter where there was a "Free CD with any Purchase" bin. Dug through, and there it was, near the bottom of the box: "Brave Words." The case is pretty beat up but the disc has just a couple scuffs, and plays fine. Holy crap.

Shack – Best of
XTC – Skylarking
AC Collins – solo album
Tribute to Grant Mc Lennan
Damned – the Black Album
Wilco – Sky Blue Sky. I’m not a Wilco’s fan but this one could reach my top 3 this year.
Spoon – Gimme Fiction. I’ll sample the best songs of this one and Gagagaga.

And I’ve also listened to some cd’s at the record shop :
Burial – Untrue
Okkervil River – last one
Sorry but for me these two didn’t made it!

Jonathan - nothing we've "released" is "official" (ie - no real label, no distribution, etc..) and it can only be obtained directly through us. We're pretty small beans, and even smaller now that the band has recently ceased to exist! The CDs we made were created in limited quantity (and very DIY) mainly to have something to sell at shows. If you're interested, just shoot me an email.

I've had a great day off work (well the cricket kind of messed things up but that's another story). So I've been able to get a good amount of listening done:-

Wilco - Sky Blue Sky
Shack - Best of
New Order - Home made best of
REM - Bootleg from Atlanta 1995

Who knows what the rest of the day will bring!

Cheers
Jon

Trees Outside The Academy - Thurston Moore. Some great songs and arrangements in here, was expecting a mixed bag of stuff but i gotta say I really enjoy this.

I like "Trees," too, XY. I don't know if I rate it up there with his SY work, but it's an interesting departure.

Louis Philippe - An Unknown Spring

Definitely not his greatest, and I'm a bit confused as to why the press has arbitrarily decided to suddenly give so much attention to this album as opposed to any of his previous works (but I'm still glad he's getting any attention at all). Still, there are handful of genuinely moving and gorgeous tunes here.

North Star Deserter - Vic Chesnutt - A lot.

If I had to describe it I'd say "Is the Drunken Actor Happy?" You Are Never Alone is the standout track for me. I've still not figured if he's being humourous or maudlin or vitriolic, and that's what I like about it. Come to think of it that's pretty much sums up what I like about Vic in general...

I adore Louis phillipe's stuff, well at least his el material.

Is he on iTunes?

Spence, I'm not sure, for some reason I'm having trouble accessing the iTunes store to check at the moment...

The El stuff is great, but he's done some good music since then. My favorite Philippe album is Sunshine, which came out on Trattoria back in '93, I think. His stuff has been patchy since, but his albums always have at least a few good songs.

Going back to the topic of out-of-print, hard-to-find kiwi pop, I was dismayed to see a copy of the Verlaines Juvenalia just go on ebay for $44. Looks like I won't be obtaining that one anytime soon, unless I get some "stars-are-aligned" luck at a record store.

The Verlaines 'Juvenalia'? Is that the LP with the bluey-turquoise sleeve and has 'Death + The Maiden' on it? If so I bought it for 99p (new) many moons ago. Must dig it out again, but can't remember being overwhelmed by it.

Listening to Coltrane's 'Giant Steps' at the mo'...

Andrew, yeah, that's the one. The handful of songs I've heard from it are largely stellar.

Jack Frost's debut. It sounds very beautiful right now. More so than I've ever previously thought.

Roger Daltrey (!!!) "Giving it all away"

The Hollies "Air that I breathe". Play it and your can here The Verve trying to get out...

I'm caught in a Post-glam pre-punk moment, probably to do with Christmas..
