Delving through my 80's vinyl, (all the fault of this message board) I came across some Woodentops singles and also their first LP.

I remember seeing them live and they were wonderfully off kilter and ramshackle. Not in a "C86 shabling way" but just very rattly and dancey and chaotic. Their drummer played standing up and I remember quite liking the look of the keyboard player called Alice. They didn't jangle but acoustic guitars were all over their stuff along with wheezy organ and percussion.

"It will come" is a good single as is "Plenty" which came out on Dave Balfe's Food Records label. Balfey of course has since been immortalised in Blur's Country House single as well as in the brilliant Julian Cope Head-on/Reposessed book.

Stumbled across another 80's gem. Jacob's ladder by The Monochrome set. I'm going to have to get this stuff copied into a digital format...

I have that first Woodentops LP. It's not bad, and definitely has a few good songs, but I never had any life-altering epiphanies with it. It's good for a listen now and then.

I love the Monochrome Set, but I realized the other day that I only have their first three albums and don't recall hearing any of the stuff they did after that. Like Lost Weekend, Dante's Casino, etc... haven't heard those, never see them in the shops, and I'm wondering if they're as good as the early records.
