....from this year that you would recommend to friends as a "must hear". Mines would be Untrue by Burial because it has all the elements that make up my perfect music concoction. Its rhythmic, its got tunes but they dont wear you down with instant familiarity, its taking Massive Attacks blueprint but ultimately sounds like nothing else, its dark and broody, its atmospheric, its music from the future now. |

I'll second The Panics. A definite contender for favourite of the year. I'd never have heard of them if it hadn't been for this board, so thanks to all!! Vic Chesnutt - North Star Deserter. Although I'm aware there are some friends who just don't get him, I think I may be able to convert a few with this one. |

Since I already posted my faves of the year around these parts, I'll recommend "The Voice of Lightness," a two-CD retrospective of Tabu Ley Rochereau, one of the greatest Afro-pop singers of all time. If anyone's in the market for something a bit off the beaten path, this is classic, important and just plain lovely stuff. |

I honestly cannot think of anything released this year that I would deem a "must hear." |

An unexpected but very pleasant find from Chicago... The band is called The 1900s and their new album on Parasol is "Cruel and Kind". I won't say it's the best album of the year, but definitely an excellent choice for those who are scouting for something new, particularly if you like a cross of psychedelia and indie pop. Strong melodies and vocals, nice mix of instruments, too. Catchy, catchy, catchy! |

Paul, it is indeed a nice album. I picked up a copy along with the e.p. ( Plume Delivery ) from Parasol a few months ago. Another interesting band from Chicago is Brighton MA. They have only released an EP so far but their debut album is due for release early next year. The main songwriter for the band is Matt Kerstein who was previously a member of the Scotland Yard Gospel Choir. You can check out some tracks over on MySpace. |
