As she has had a couple of mentions recently I was prompted to dig out the only LP I have "il n'y a pas d'amour heureux". It's in glorious mono from 1968, United Artists. All strings and trebly guitar but wonderful.I picked it up in a second-hand shop in Sheffield in about 1982...when they were a great source for such things...

Une très belle fille! Don't get me started on French bohemian polo-neck-sweater-wearing female chanteuses from the 1960s...

I seem to recall a story that Nick Drake visited her a couple of times in Paris, to try and persuade her to sing songs of his. I wonder if Françoise has ever spoken of this in interviews?

+ here is the story http://www.dirtylinen.com/feature/42drak e.html

And answering my own question(!), from the French wikipedia entry on Drake, her very words

« Très peu de temps avant sa mort […], il m'a téléphoné. Il a voulu que l'on se voie. […] je ne l'ai plus jamais revu après cette soirée. Quoi que prétende la légende, il n'a jamais été question de faire quelque chose ensemble – j'aurais pourtant adoré... »

She saw him just before his death, but whatever the stories say there was never of a question of doing something together...

No, come on Andrew, please do get started on French bohemian polo-neck-sweater-wearing female chanteuses from the 1960s...actually, that would be a great title for some kind of immense DVD box set...someone'll get round to it I suppose...

Are there really that many French bohemian polo-neck-sweater-wearing female chanteuses from the 60's?

Never did quite get the appeal, maybe it's a teststerone thing?

Or maybe it's because I'm jealous. Those bitches were always gorgeous, and I look hideous in a polo-neck-sweater...

Some of the singers would be France Gall, Claudine Longet and Brigitte Bardot to name a few. I suppose you could even count Jane Birken, although she was born in England. Nouvelle Vague actress's include BB, Jeanne Moreau, Anna Karina and Corrine Marchand.

Sorry I do not really have any in-depth knowledge on this sub-genre, but I did see a site a while back that featured some fine examples. And with reproductions of the their truly fab 45rpm sleeves. Unfortunately I can't find it again. Good story eh?

Suede jackets with frilly bits featured quite heavily too...

Talking of bohemian French chanteuses, is the rest of the world aware that our president, M Sarkozy is stepping out with ex super-model/friend of Marianne Faithfull/singer Carla Bruni? OK she's actually Italian, but her first CD was in French and sold lots in France. Rumours that he requires a box to stand on to be able to kiss her are to be confirmed.

Personally I am binning her CD in protest. It's kinda samey, but I did quite like "Quelqu'un m'a dit"

I "dig" this stuff at some supeficial cinema - dream type level..it crops up in "Go-bees land" with the Jane Birkin reference made by RF to Amanda's backing vocals on Streets OFYT and again, sort of, with the comment by GM that Marianne F should have covered Bachelor Kisses, did someone (GM ?)also state that Rachel Worth lived in France in 1959...It ties in with GM saying about mexican postcard being a "super 8 film of a country he's never visited". The swedish architect in a white sweater, striped sunlight sound kind of imagery thing...I'm rambling now so over & out..
