He does a fantastic review of the latest album by Australian pop princess Delta Goodrem. Instead of just dismissing it out of hand, which I would do with what I see as insipid, vacuous crap, he really listened to it and picked out some good points as well as slamming the very many bad and awful points to it. He also has a very interesting theory on why there are so many producers songwriters credited on the songs - basically that record labels in the 80s started using different producers and many writers on the same pop records so that each would work harder at getting "the hit". This is obviously to the detriment of the record as a whole as everything is designed to be a radio hit and there is no overall feel to the album. It's a brilliantly thought out and articulated essay on pop music and a theory that I had not come across before, though it makes perfect sense now that I've read it. (I actually read the article weeks ago but kept forgetting to post about it here). In the previous edition of The Monthly Robert wrote about going to the new Rough Trade shop in London. He used it as a launch pad to write about the death of record shops as we know them and also about the CDs he bought in the Rough Trade shop. It was good to read of a musician actually going into a shop and buying records just like we do! He really is a terrific writer. |
