I hate to see you cry - Alan Hull

Flu always makes me nostalgic, so it was back to Newcastle's John Lennon this weekend for this great ballad, amongst others. Wonderful voice, best served by simple piano or guitar accompaniment as here rather than the rather plunkety pubrock arrangements he often got.

Aretha Franklin - I Say A Little Prayer

Was just reminded of what a genius vocalist she is after watching this superb live performance of the song. From a 1970 Cliff Richards TV show believe it or not! (and check of the fantastic backing singers and their groovy choreography):

Poppies in the Field - Teardrop Explodes

This lovely, moody gem has always been a favorite. Really appropriate for the rainy, wintery weather we've been having this week, too.

Andrew Hansen - Rancid Amputation

A 'lounge' version of Cannibal Corpse's charming death metal ditty by Andrew from 'The Chaser' (Aussie comedy bad boys):

Gotta love that last line...

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb.

(Though Dar Williams' cover suits me even better) When BBC World Service mentioned the 40th anniversary of the group, I was reminded of how I only really appreciated them once I'd passed my 40th birthday.

(remind me of how much I want to sing a certain song from 'A Momentary Lapse of Reason' the next time I have the chance to sing karaoke, all right? The one about learning to fly...)

Geoff - have you heard the original Mas Que Nada by Jorge Ben from his debut album, "Samba Esquema Novo"? It's incredible - a bit moodier.

Also, have you heard Mendes' Brasil '65 album? Riveting.

Spence, Is that the 12" single version of "There's always something on my mind" ?

I have it somewhere...it's got Just a girl on it and Lavinia's dream, think it was 1982

the original version is my favorite, but it's such a damn great song that all versions rule. (i think i only know of two - the original single version and the re-make on the album).

I had a scary thing happen this morning. Driving along through the streets of Birmingham, I had Senses Working Overtime on, from an XTC compilation. Right next to me on my right went past a large dark green removal van or something with the horse from the cover of English Settlement, white out and everything, i swear the company copied ES for their bvrand. Really scary though!!!!!

Spence, Isn't that the Uffington Horse? That's been carved into a hillside just outside of Swindon since the Bronze Age? I reckon it's fair game for anyone to use. But yeah, it's hard not to associate it with XTC's fabulous English Settlement.

Spence, I only really know that from being obsessed with XTC and having read their biography! Apparently their US label at the time, Geffen, thought the image was of a duck, and upon hearing that it's a horse, told the band they could get some artists in to illustrate a "real" horse!
