you lucky Australians: THE APARTMENTS (NSW) with Dave Graney and Clare Moore featuring The Lurid Yellow Mist Fri 29 Jun (Doors 8.30) Tickets: $16+bf on sale Mon 21 May ($20 at the door if still available) What some people know about The Apartments could fit on a cigarette paper. Others, could write books. If something about the name rings a bell, it’s because songs by The Apartments’ Peter Milton Walsh have been covered by many a famous artist. The band first got together in Brisbane, 1978, breaking up in 1979, and returning to the music scene in 1993. The 2007 incarnation of The Apartments features players from the past four albums – John Willsteed (ex-Go Betweens) on bass, Eliot Fish (Todd Sparrow) on guitar, and Gene Maynard on drums. |

Damn! But this must mean a new album. I was not aware that people had covered Walsh's songs Thomas. They certainly deserve it. |

Randy, the text is not mine...its from the northcote-club-homepage. I´wondering too, which bands/artists made a apartment-cover? |

I believe This Mortal Coil recorded 'Mr. Somewhere' from The Evening Visits...And Stays For Years in the early 1990's. |

Thanks Donat! Very strange that they don't play Sydney when "they" have Elliot from Big Heavy Stuff in the lineup now. Who has made comments is also intriguing. |

I hope so Geoff. I think they're playing four nights, which might be a tad ambitious! Skip the work party! That happens every year. The Apartments is a once or twice a lifetime thing! |

As luck would have it, I've already shelled out the dough ($50) for a night at the Grange golfclub! Maybe I can sneek away early.... |

What's this about The Triffids? This just isn't fair! I very much wish that that Star Trek "Beam me up Scotty" machine really did exist!! |

The Triffids are reforming with guest vocalists, such as Steve Kilbey from the Church, filling in for David McComb. I have no other details. I thought it was only for one show but Padraig has indicated it's 4. It's part of the Festival of Sydney which has finally started to interest me. In the last couple of years they have had The Go Betweens story(Last gig with Grant), Elvis Costello with the Brodsky Quartet and a Tribute to Leonard Cohen with Antony, Rufus Wainwright etc. This year they have the Triffids (which I am seeing) and Brian Wilson doing Pet Sounds, which I found out too late about and it's completely sold out.... which has has me really pissed off about too!!! |

I hope they get Glenn Richards. He's much more histrionic as a singer than Kilbey and his own work is clearly more inspired by McComb. Geoff I agree with Padraig. Peter Milton Walsh may be back for real or he may withdraw again. I sure as hell hope somebody coaxes an album out of him. |

Oh it was wonderful Randy, as you and Catherine and my friend Dave will know from my text messages from the gig! A friend at the gig mentioned Lindy Morrison and Jeffery Wegener from The Laughing Clowns ... to which I replied: "There's Lindy at the door." I went over to say hello. She introduced me to her companion - Amanda Brown. Lindy introduced me as "Padraig, an Irish writer", I was pretty happy with this introduction! James Joyce, Oscar Wilde and me! Then Jeffery Wengener came along and Lindy introduced me to him too! It seemed like everyone my mate had been talking about suddenly appeared. I begged him to talk about Scarlet Johannson. I thought I saw Adele Pickvance there too, but it seems I was mistaken. John Wilsteed told me so! He was playing bass with The Apartments last night and afterwards we briefly talked politics. Real politics, not Go-Betweens politics! Three-fifths of the last pre-reformation line-up of The Go-Betweens in one small, but great, venue in Sydney... But it was The Apartments' night. And what a night. Peter Milton Walsh dedicated Not Every Clown Can Be In The Circus to "my dear, dear friend Grant McLennan". I doubt I was the only one with tears in my eyes. The song was beautiful, of course, and will now always have an extra resonance for me. Peter later compared John Wilsteed to both a chicken and an eagle after, first accusing him of turning down the guitar amp! Lindy laughed heartily. So did everyone else. He meant it in a nice way though! The rest of the band was brilliant too - drumes, trumpet, keyboards and guitar/ backing vocals. What an utter joy it was to hear Things You'll Keep live. What an incredible song. All The Time In The World was beautiful, magnificent. Make It Count was preceeded by a hilarious story about the Pet Shop Boys' producer and Dusty Springfield. I thought of Randy during the "put the sheets in the fridge" line in Something To Live For (not certain that's the right song title). Afterwards Lindy continued her introductions with Peter Milton Walsh. I told him how great the gig was and how much A Life Full Of Farewells means to me. He was lovely, of course! I also said the only song I hadn't heard that I would have loved to hear them play was The Failure Of Love Is A Brick Wall. I thought when he came out for the encore, looking for his acoustic guitar and with just guitarist Elliott Fish with him that we would get to hear The Failure Of Love... but it wasn't to be. Hopefully next time, whenever that might be. |

Thanks for the post Padraig, that is a truly enjoyable account of the evening. I just found this on youtube: http://youtube.com/watch?v=VsJIxM8_Q7o This is NOT from the gig Padraig saw last night, but from the Brisbane gig last July. It's a wonderful song. |

Well Padraig, you already know how envious of you I am for this gig. Thank you very much for the lengthy account. I'm glad Walsh appears to be enjoying the experience; it boosts the possibility of him giving us a new record. Thanks for the link Jeff. I love the fact that the only comment on it (so far) is in French. |

Okay, Okay, we get the message, it was great! Rub it in why don't you! Now I know how it felt when I gloated about the Blue Nile or Vic Chesnutt gigs! Seriously, though, great report, to the extent that I've ordered lots of Apartments from Amazon. Thanks for the link Jeff. Looking forward to visiting the internet cafe later, to have a look. |

I would love to meet and chat up with Lindy, Amanda and John Wilsteed all in one night! Robert Vickers is another on the agenda. It would be so cool if RF, Lindy and Amanda could patch things up and tour together again with Vickers on bass. |

Great review of Apartments gig Padraig. I saw then earlier in the year at Troubadour before their show at Pig City. Big thanks to Hugh Nimmo for alerting me to this band. |

Spence, I sent some sample tracks to your forum e-mail address on 20 December, 2007, but I have just received a mail delivery software message stating that they have not been delivered due to 'host lookup did not complete.' No idea what that means. David, my pleasure. Padraig, enjoyed your account of the gig. |

There were two songs I did not recognise played Randy. But I don't have everything by The Apartments so they may have been old songs. |

No new songs. The sets have been the same for all four shows the Apartments have played this year - just in different order. Breathtaking to hear, nonetheless. I think every time he goes out and plays, he takes it seriously. I think it's varying circumstances which stop the music from continuously flowing - you can hear them in Walsh's songs. |

The Sydney show was wonderful - almost too intense. I have been thinking about it a lot since, it's rare to have a show where every single song was a gem - there wasn't any filler to let one get one's breath back. I really hope there will be more shows - a live recording of this lineup would be pretty amazing. |
