No Jeff, its just the 3 albums as they were originally released. However, the albums are remastered, the CDs are housed in mini versions of the LP sleeves in a gatefold effect. There is also a Nick Drake DVD called "A Skin Too Few", and a fairly wordy booklet which I have still to read. Definitely worth the £20. |

Geoff, I have to give Machine Translations more listens. I've just come out of a period of silence. (Sometimes I just need the mental space). So I've only heard "Seven Seven" about three times which isn't enough for me. My superficial response to J. Walker is that he's pleasant but a little bland and, then, I'll go "but this song is quite good" and then the next song will come on and "well, this song is very good too." So I'll report later. But since the only other Machine Translations LP I have is "Bad Shapes" I won't be able to comment on the comparative merits of "Seven Seven" with the rest of the ouvre. Hugh, fascinating list there. Of course I've heard of not one single one of those artists. |

If we mean delivered, as upposed to clicking the "purchase now" icon, it would have to be the 5 love cds of Lucinda Williams shows in LA during the summer. Haven't listened to them yet, but am looking forward to it. I've even bought extra hankies for listening to Sweet Old World. I have an order in with Amazon, which may not get here before Santa Claus and his mates, but it'll be a nice start to 2008 if not! |

Malajbue - Le Compte complet, A Canadian band that impressed me at The Electric Picnic Festival last Summer, this is their debut from a couple of years ago, couldn't find the new one. Final Fantasy - He poos Clouds, Another Canadian who scored the strings on the new Beirut album and who I saw doing an improv thing with a lad from CYHSY and a few other musicians I didn't know at the EP festival also, it was excellent and probably raised my expectations too high for this album as I've not warmed to it yet, parts of it are like a luke warm Yanns Tierson. Vic Chesnutt - North Star Deserter, been meaning to get this since Catherine's review of the recent concert in Dublin. The Monochrome Set - Tomorrow will be too long, had Strange Boutique on vinyl and rarely play it so picked up this best of in the hope of some better material. Natalie Merchant - Retrospective, Songs from '95-'05 Loved her Tigerlily album but bought no more. Damon & Naomi - Within These Walls, released last year, gentle folk sounds and lovely arrangements none of which feature Dean Wareham Jens Lekman - Night Falls Over Korteda, beautiful pop music, another Canadian I think I'm Not There - OST, haven't played this yet nor saw the film but it features a lot of artists doing Bob's back Catalogue, hope it lives up to expectations. Lou Reed - New York, never had this on cd. Picked these up in Bleeker Records and Other Music, two fine music shops in NY, one was a longstanding small shop across from a recently closed Tower Records..A Giant Killer! |

I have one album by Lekman which I like but I think he sounds too much like Stephin Merrit...first time I heard Black Cab I thought it was Magnetic Fields. Jeff what's the HOL's German Album like? Worth getting if you have the first two albums? It's available for €13 from CD-WOW though I'm loathed to throw any business their way, they can be brutal with deliveries... |

XY - I'm still forming my opinion of the German Album, but so far I'd say that if you really dig HOL's first two albums, the German album is worth it. There are some genuinely pretty, melodic songs, balanced by some rockers. The female guitarist who left prior to the debut album adds a nice element with her backing vocals (and even lead vocals on one song). So far, I'm liking it, though I still reckon their debut is probably their best and most perfect statement, if that makes sense. |

Oh, and this particular German Album reissue (which was just released in Fall '07) is a pretty nice package: comes in one of those thin, glossy, cardboard slipcases and includes a cool booklet with neat photos and gushing liner notes from the guy from that Big Takeover magazine. Not sure if that tidbit of info would sway anyone, but there it is... |

which one is the german one? is that the self-titled "butterfly" one? the creation/fontana compilations released over the past couple of years seem to cover most of what i really like. though i still dig babe rainbow out every now and again. |

Joe, this is the German album: http://www.amazon.com/German-Album-House -Love/dp/B000UVPIWE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s =music&qid=1201650652&sr=8-1 It's the comp that covers all the a-sides and b-sides that they released prior to their debut album. There was a Creation-era comp that came out several years ago that includes all of the contents of the German Album plus the entirety of the debut, but I *think* that is out of print now (and redundant for someone who already has the debut on CD). |

oh that is pretty sweet. all that's missing is christine (i've personally never found the debut all that vital). that creation comp is brilliant, though i only got as far as downloading it. i'd better start scouring through ebay to pick up a copy before it's lost forever! |

The House of Love. Funny one this. I adored them, thought they were fantastic. At the time around '87/88 they sorta transcended the shambling thing that had been going on (so did others like Easterhouse, Railway Children, AR Kane et al) . They were like a cross between The Chruch, The Velvets and The Bunnymen, (their rhythm section was as tight and as funked up as the Bunnymen, no mean feat that) and I think they appealed to the people that loved those bands. Many people I knew at that time didn't have that much time for them though which was s shame, though they always packed out the dance floors with Shine On and Destroy the Heart, i don't know why I love You etc etc. The German album I got like most people, AFTER the first proper album on Creation, Plasticbeing a real faveourite. The first proper album was an understated classic, though I actually preferred a much later one called Babe Rainbow. By this time though Bickers had left, and really it was down to Chadwick, but songs like Girl with the lonliest eyes, Crush me, Yer Eyes (sounding like Bickers next band Levitation), you don't understand (Sounding like Spencer Davies Group) were really brilliant tunes. And of course there was Beatles and The Stones, a genius track. I saw them live many times, they had balls, that's what I admired about em. However the world wasn't ready for them, same was true of The Blue Aeroplanes and many other bands, like A House, etc. They were very influential I think, in a way like The Pixies were, and The Smiths, The Verve and Radiohead probably owe them a fair few pints. Safe and tracks mentioned above will always hold a special place in my white indie heart, "Gawd bless em!" |

Spence - you bring up something about HOL that is key to how great they were: the rhythm section. The rhythm section could be totally muscular when the song called for it. Hell, the whole band could be. But I guess the point here is that for me they stuck out head and shoulders above all the c86 stuff because they could play achingly pretty, melodic songs, but at that same time possessed this muscularity that made them seem really confident and exciting. I think you could say the same about the Smiths and the Bunnymen. It was that ability to *rock* that ultimately made them better than so many of their peers. I'm really digging the German Album. It's neat to hear all these songs I'd never heard before. "Plastic," "Destroy the Heart," and "Nothing to Me," to name a few, are all awesome tunes. As for the debut, I love it. It's a wee bit patchy, but those first three songs are nothing short of stunning. Definitely one of the best "first three songs" run of any album. |

Andreas, "Solo in Rio," is a great, stripped down performance. The man was an insanely talented guitarist! My personal Bonfa favorites are "Luiz Bonfa Plays and Sings Bossa Nova" and "O Violao E O Samba." Stellar Bossa Nova, and both from around '62-'63, before Bonfa went all goopy. El recently put out a comp called Guitar Music of Brazil, that's got some wonderful instrumental stuff from the mid-50s. |

Well, I've just ordered House of Love's German Album from Amzon UK thanks to posting's here - so it'd better be good! Somehow they passed me by in the 80s, when I was listening to the Go-Betweens, REM, The Teardrop Explodes, The Smiths, The Mighty Lemon Drops and loads of 60s stuff (Buffalo Springfield, Jefferson Airplane, Beatles) and I only discovered them recently. I don't even know how I came across them (possibly here?). |
