http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/music/2008/0 1/sparks_prepare_to_hit_21_album.html 21 albums to be played on consecutive nights ! Funny comments in the blog - someone suggested The Fall do something similiar, with their original lineups.. |

Last time it seemed they bubbled up to the surface was when they did Cool Places with the Go-Go's Jane Wiedlin. |

Sparks have enjoyed a rabid cult following over the years, so I'm not surprised they're doing this. Wish I could see the "Kimono My House" and "Propaganda" nights! |

If you get chance, watch Rollercoaster (1978 ?) starring Timothy Bottoms...Sparks play live at the funfair. They were always great for enraging yer Dad on TOTP..."What the bloody hell..."etc etc Going off on a tangent my vinyl copy of "No1 in heaven" was the wobbliest vinyl ever...why was that ? It was noted that some vinyl was thicker/thinner than others...I had a mate whose Out of the Blue LP was like an old 78..It wasn't the blue vinyl version, I think it was an import copy though...wow what an interesting post this is !! |

Wilson - by "wobbly" do you mean the sound wavered? Or did the vinyl just look warped? If it's the former, that means it's an off-center pressing, and when the tone-arm sways back and forth with the grooves, the pitch fluctuates, resulting in audibly wavery sound. I've encountered a few LPs over the years where this is so bad that they're unlistenable. A lot of LPs on Beggars Banquet and Cherry Red in the 80s had this problem, actually. |

During the two oil embargoes in the 1970s, some of the record companies experimented with thinner vinyl to cut costs. The result was frequently warped records, even when they were new. RCA comes to mind as one of the companies particularly guilty of this. I never knew whether anybody was doing this on the other side of the Atlantic. Wilson's post suggests that perhaps they were. |

I remember leaving a copy of my mate's brother's Inflammable Material by Stiff Little Fingers next to the radiator by accident, and it warped, kinda ironic given the title. It still played Ok though! |

The sad thing about warped records is that there is really no way to reliably un-warp them. It has been scientifically proven that the only way to un-warp a record is to place the it between two thick sheets of tempered glass and throw it in the oven at some specific temperature for some specific length of time. And if you get it wrong, it can result in a lateral warp (which could be kind of like having an off-center pressing), or you can smudge the grooves together, rendering them untrackable. Basically, unless you're willing to go through that hassle, a warped record is as useful as an ashtray. |

You can't just put it under a huge pile of art books for six months? |

Actually, no! I've tried. Well, not for 6 months, but I did leave a warped record sitting under a broken 65 pound guitar amp for a lengthy stretch of time and it did absolutely nothing. |

Jeff, Wobbly as in when held in two hands by the palms, as I had seen my Dad do with his Brass band LP's, (proper music son!) you could do the Rolf impression...My copy of Tattoo You was so thick you couldn't get a wobble out of it whereas that Sparks LP you could almost fold in half ! Jeff Wobbly ?? now there was a bass player ! |

Jeff, I left a warped record under a whole pile of other records for weeks and, as with your experiment, it made no difference whatsoever! I always found Dutch vinyl pressings to be the flimsiest and Japanese the best. Someone who knows about these things once told me that 7" singles were made from 75% recycled material, which was why they sounded so distinctive. Randy, I didn't know that about the record companies in the 70s. Very interesting. Bloody APEC! |
