Does anyone know of a way of mail-ordering (I'm in the U.S.) the catalog/CD for the recent "Brisbane Sound" exhibition? I can't seem to find any listing for it on the Institute of Modern Art's site. Can't go through life not knowing what "I am an Architect" sounds like, now can I? Thanks for any information. | ||

I do not think that it is printed yet. The David Pestorious web site has it as "forthcoming" still. The Brisbane Sound Catalogue, 220 x 170mm, 180 pages, offset, produced in connection with The Brisbane Sound project. (Forthcoming) There is a Brisbane Sound family Tree thing for sale though! I have received a few enquiries about the delay in the production of the Brisbane Sound catalogue. This publication should have been out in time for the exhibition and concerts, however my co-publisher, the Institute of Modern Art, has objected (quite unreasonably, in my view) to the design of a section of the catalogue — a 40 page illustrated chronology — by Leni Hoffmann, the German artist who those posting here may recall was the artist who RF commissioned to design the Warm Nights album and single covers and tour t-shirts back in 1996. This dispute has yet to be resolved, however there is a positive side to the delay in that the major German publisher Verlag Walther König in Cologne recently offered to distribute the catalogue internationally, which should mean those interested in Europe, the UK and America should be able to more easily purchase a copy ... when it does come out. As for the Liam Gillick designed 'family tree', which you can see a detail of on my website, this A2 poster was produced in time for the Brisbane Sound exhibition and those who attended the show will have seen it installed there. The intention is that this poster will be a fold-down insert in the catalogue, i.e. you will get it for free when you buy the catalogue. The same goes for the CD compilation album. And, yes, there are two previously unreleased Go-Betweens tracks on The Brisbane Sound compilation. An announcement to this effect was issued several months ago and it surprised me then, as it does again now, that this seems to be of little or no interest to those who regularly post here. Both songs are fantastic additions to the official Go-Betweens canon and will, I think, in time generate quite some discussion — not necessarily here — as to why they haven't been released before this. The second of these tracks, 'I Know Why', was wholly forgotten until we recently found it while trawling through some old practice room tapes. The song was recorded in mid-June 1981 and for reasons no-one can easily explain today it did not get recorded at the 'Send Me A Lullaby' sessions only a few weeks later. RF recently stated that the song is better than much of the material recorded in the studio at that time. This may give you some idea of just how good this song is and what a remarkably productive and crazy time it was back then. | ||

Yes, that's correct. Like the Liam Gillick poster the CD is to be an insert in the catalogue and not sold separately. I should perhaps also add that it is a limited edition of 1,000 copies. | ||

Very little is presently known about 'I Know Why', but I would say it's highly unlikely that it's connected to The Reason Why project, which was late '79 or thereabouts. Having said that, RF can't now recall writing 'I Know Why', although he feels sure it's one of his songs and not one of Grant's (he thinks Grant would not have lightly discarded such a good song). The song's life, how many times they played it, worked on it, and so forth is not known. It may only have been a matter of a few weeks. Remember this was in that intense 6–9 months after Lindy joined the group and in the lead-up to the recording of 'Send Me A Lullaby', when they were burning through a lot of material, trying things out. | ||

Not sure that I'd describe it as lavish exactly ... maybe. Certainly, for those interested in that late '70s and early '80s period, it will add quite a lot to the existing state of knowledge. For example, it will reproduce Graham Aisthorpe's great interview with RF (mentioned in David Nichols' book), recorded soon after his return from the UK in mid-1980, as well as RF's not so well-known 1999 essay on the Four Gods (accompanied here by a wonderful photo sequence by Gary Warner). It will also include a recent and quite lengthy interview with RF that reflects on the period. Another treat is a 12 page section of illustrated aerial photos of the inner-city showing where people lived, key venues and other locations of interest. Anyway, I'm sure Jonathan will announce the publication details, cost, availability, etc. when the catalogue finally becomes available, although this may not be for some months yet. | ||

I understand that the dispute between the artist Leni Hoffmann and the catalogue publisher, the Institute of Modern Art, regarding Hoffmann's design of a 40 page Chronology, was only recently resolved. With a bit of luck, this development should lead to the completion of work on the production of the catalogue sometime in the new year. |
