New month, new list.

The Triffids - Born Sandy Devotional. I'm writing an article about Perth and the album is inspiring me. I'm going to quote the opening line of The Seabirds in it.

“No foreign pair of dark sunglasses
could ever shield you from
the light that pierces your eyelids
the screaming of the gulls.”

I got a new record player yesterday and very much enjoyed listening to Liberty Belle... and Tallulah on vinyl. I also played Stop Making Sense, Hey Jude (7"), Love Will Tear Us Apart (12"), Fools Gold (7") and more.

Oh, because the Go-Betweens records were lying on the couch my daughter was looking at them and said how different Lindy looked on the cover of Tallulah. I explained to her that she had met Lindy less than two years ago but that photo was taken more than 20 years ago! Not that she looks 20 years older mind, but a bit older, as we all do.

Hot Chip - Made In The Dark. At least as good as the last album, maybe even better.
Drive By Truckers - Brighter Than Creations Dark (Mojo and Uncuts album of the month, long overdue recognition)
Steven Malkmus & The Jicks - Real Emotional Trash. His best solo record imo
Neon Neon - Stainless Style. Great electro/hip hop collaboration between Gruff Rhys from Super Furry Animals and US producer Boom Bip
Cass McCombs - Dropping The Writ. This has been compared to Elliot Smith but I cant really see it, and its on Domino who dont normally release sub standard records.

I've been enjoying The Eels best of for a couple of weeks now. He kind of reminds me of Lloyd Cole, Beck & Babybird. Rolled into one glorius hybrid.

Also:

Mark Eitzel - 60 Watt Silver Lining

Harry Nilsson - Aerial Ballet
Gallon Drunk - The Rotten Mile

There are times when Van isn't in a bad mood, to call it a good mood would be over-optimistic!

Salad - Ice Cream
RF - Calling From A Country Phone
St - Etienne - Boxette - disc 1

Howdy Randy

Here's what we spun

Legendary Jim Ruiz Band - Sniff , one of my favourite from the 90s. Real charmer and great sounds.
Aluminum Group's latest - Little Happyness
William Shatner - Has Been.
Sam Baker - Pretty World - pretty record and great Townes V Z-like storytelling.

Of course, all these are placeholders til the Evangelist appears!

Hey Nigel! Hope you're enjoying your summer more than we are enjoying our winter.

William Shatner, now THERE's an eye-popper. A friend of mine sent me a collection of Shatner and Nimoy recordings a few years ago. Shatner's "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" . . . .

Currently:

Disc Two of Microdisney's "Daunt Square." Specifically "Horse Overboard" right now.

I used to love microdisney when they came out - ambulance for one - saw them in Stockwell in London years ago.

I know you're a Bats fan Randy. An offshoot - MiniSnap - have a new album out here with Kay singing not Bob. Still sounds very, very Batsy. Could be just your cup of Java!

The Shat's album is a real hoot and pretty heartfelt at times - Ben Folds, Henry Rollins and Joe Jackson co star/play.

I was drawn to a Ron Sexsmith vibe last night, his self titled debut and his latest "Time Being". Great songs, humane & heartfelt, bittersweet lyrics from the top drawer..I love Ron, he's in Australia next month BTW, Brisbane in March I think. Don't miss him, he likes a post-gig chat too. A genuine bloke.

Nice to see you giving the BA's a spin, have you got Friendloverplane? I think you'd like it if you haven't.

Didn't Revola put out some Shatner years ago? I think his stuff like everyone else's is widely available now, an intriguing artist.

Nigel, I used to love that track Ambulance for one. 39 Minutes is great.
I like the Shat ref!!

Listening to Horsebreaker Star (the British double CD) a lot at the moment probably subconsciously thinking of Robert's CD coming out in April. Also listening to some GBs live tracks. Funny how you kind of always come back to the GBs which I don't seem to do with others.
Put on ECs River in Reverse but it didn't really do much for me today.

Hot Chip - Made in the dark. Stand out tracks: In the privacy of our love, Bendable poseable

Getting to know it, I quite like it, like their approach to things, hearing lots of influences as one would with this type of group, one of the singer's sounds like Russ Mael to me, Devo, Byne/Eno, which is nice. It kinda makes me think of the Beta Band, but without the psychedelia. Some of the backing music remind me of Heaven 17's The Luxury Gap.
I have friends who make a lot of electronic music that I would say was as good as this, but then that is always the case with unknowns.

Spence I DO have Friendloverplane. That's the first thing I got which is why I was embarrassed a little while back when you named a couple of songs off of it that you were listening to and I didn't recognize them because I've lost the habit of actually looking at the CD packages. Gerard's titles aren't always exactly obvious.

I also have Bop Art/Tolerance, Swagger and Beatsongs.

I know you like Swagger the best whereas I seem to favor their earliest things. I love Bop Art and I'm liking the Art Objects album just as much. Beatsongs is far too college-radio-rock in sound for my taste; it sounds like Gerard jamming with the Hoodoo Gurus or the Smithereens or even maybe that Athens, Georgia group he was so chummy with for a bit.

Driving around Los Angeles, I often find myself intoning "built in a day, built in a day, built in a day, built in a day."

I'm trying to decide what BA thing to get next.

Nigel, Amazon US and Amazon UK deny the existence of MiniSnap. Rocking Horse Records doesn't have anything either. I remember getting a couple things from a NZ shop; I'll have to find them and see what they have. The idea of Bats music sung by Kaye Woodward sounds really good to me.

Spence - I haven't been paying attention to all the recent chatter about Hot Chip, but hold on: Heaven 17's Luxury Gap?! *That* is a comparison that grabbed my attention! Are you serious? I adore Luxury Gap.

Listening at work today, on and off, to Cathal Coughlan's Grand Necropolitan.

Randy, prior to the release of the new album, Minisnap had put out two ep's ( In My Pocket in 2002 and March Hare in 2004.) I have a feeling the band released them themselves as they appear to be CDR's as opposed to professionally pressed discs.

Both titles are listed for sale on the Smokecds and NewZealandcds websites.

Friend is a great compilation. Actually its many of the BA's fave stuff too! I remember playing with them around this time and they were amazing.

I love BopART/tolerance, Spitting out Miracles. I think it was Spitting that Stipe was fond of when they made the call..

Swagger means a lot to me personally as I was supporting on the tour and spent a lot of time with them. I still stand by the statemement one of the greatest albums of all time.

Yes Jeff. Killing Joke's middle period was good, if you're not completely lost on doom-rock. Reminds me of The Chameleons, which is quite a potent reference point. I've also got the expanded Night Time CD which seems to be a more revered LP according to afficionado's.

I'm an optimist when it comes to R.E.M. That particular song is not close enough to either Reconing or Monster for my liking. Way too MOR to float my boat just now. Time will tell! I'll be happy if it's like New Adventures... but shorter.

REM to me, is like a multi-national company that you know is there and don't particularly care for. You question their ethics and yadda yadda yadda and you know the brand without looking at their logo, and you know there's pretty much gonna be no new surprises other than a positive financial forecast in their forthcoming Report and Accounts!!

Ah, thanks Spence: "Spitting Out Miracles" next.

Last night:
Peter Azzopardi--Greetings from Vale Pascoe Sth.
Cathal Coughlan--The Grand Necropolitan. Many thanks to Jeff for this.

Spence' comment about REM reminds me of a quote from Roy Wood at the end of an insert to a Move comp: "At the time I was just writing what came into my head and never thought what style it should be. I wish I could still do that. I have to write to order now!" I wonder if this always happens? It's depressing.

It's hard to believe, but the last time a new studio REM album was vital to me was over 15 years ago. These days day I would rather mine for a buried treasure that escaped me back in the 80's or early 90's, like The Lilac Time's debut album, then fret about a new REM album that I will be disappointed in. Thanks to this list and everyone's album suggestions over the years, I got over the lack of an exiting new REM album to look foreward to.

Jeff, its not a facsimile by any means, but along with echoes of 80's keybaord based music and other artist's I mention above I can hear, personally, bits of that album in there. the bits aren't something that I could easily pick out, and its not the voice of H17, there's no way this guy sounds remotley Glenn Gregory.

Hot Chp ar by no means Heaven 17 is a better way of putting it!

The Geraldine Fibbers - The Geraldine Fibbers. A seven song EP from 1994 that I've just played for the first time in at least six years, but probably the first time this century. Brilliant old country (as opposed to alt country) music.

H17 and Hot Chip - cant see it myself but I was always suspicious of H17 - might have been the suits.

Hotchip are more like Kraftwerk crossed with early depeche mode. One song actually nicks an Eyeless in Gaza style keyboard motif - great taste!

And on another note, now that Hot Chip has been mentioned in the same sentence as Eyeless in Gaza, I think it's imperative that I check them out.

Joao Gilberto - "The Legendary..." this might be the score of the year. Today, for a mere $5 I found this impossibly rare CD that compiles Joao's first three albums, which are also impossible to find on their own. This thing fetches $100 online. I am happy in bossa nova heaven.

And for me, the released-in-UK-only Rhino comp: "Lulu-The Atco Sessions 1969-72." This is something I've wanted to see released on CD for over 20 years now, her two best albums--and ONLY important albums--plus the usual bunch of rarities.

for some reason have been listening to Hunky Dory recently an liking the songs I wasn't so keen on 20 years ago and being disappointed by the ones which have grown large in my memory, i.e The Bewlay Brothers,I use to love Bowie when I was 16-17 but have not bothered with him since.
Also bought Joni Mitchel-Blue which I'll have to give more time too
Really waiting for the Australians to be released: Nick Cave and RF Cds

Been listening to Beautiful Waste - The Triffids. Fantastic to hear "Raining Pleasure" and "Field of Glass" again since I ditched the broken record player years ago!
"Cut off my arms/put 'em in a brown paper bag/ see how many ribbons and medals I win".

Frank.
I LOVE "Blue". It takes time to reveal it's secrets but when it hits...WHOAH!!!
I guess like everyone you will end up shedding a tear when you hear "River" around Xmas.

Geoff, do you have "Beautiful Waste" as a CD or a download? The UK Amazon site gives a release date in April. The US Amazon site gives a February 5 release date but then says they don't have a copy yet and the price is absurd. Domino is identified as the label releasing it but Domino's site doesn't even mention "Beautiful Waste" or, for that matter, the new "Black Swan" reissue. It's odd.

Spence
John Smith was the chairman, now your testing me... I think he was Chairman from 1973 to 1990, and unfortunately died around 1994-95. He was a lovely man who had the interests of the game (and Liverpool at heart). I didn't get that single, but I did have the anfield (c)rap, and another couple of singles. The kop were top notch last night.

Not had much chance to listen to anything today, but hopefully that'll change later.

Cheers

No more than a few hours after putting up my last post on this thread Domino sent me the announcement of the release of "Beautiful Waste," "Black Swan" and "Treeless Plain" all for April 8. My pre-orders are in place. It seems right that the Australians should get them first.

Last night:

Van Morrison - His Band & The Street Choir

The Durutti Column - Circuses & Bread

... and currently:

Heaven 17 - Endless - a compilation of the great ones remixes & including THE Megamix! Contributing to a front room disco party for myself & the kids. (one way or another, I'll make sure they're missing school)

Randy, I have downloaded both on iTunes Auz and have burnt copies for other formats(obviously).
Sad but true - I'll be buying the CD copies when they are released!

Listening to Bryter Layter. I still think the strings are overwrought, sickly sweet and sound like they should be accompanying Gerry and the Pacemakers!

That song that asks the musical question, "Can Your Pussy Do the Dog?" has always been a favorite. SOMEBODY had to write it...

I always wondered if somebody ever gave that poor bloke on the cover of Pilgrim some Nair...he needs the family size bottle.

Listening to a lot of Vampire Weekend. That lot are really on to something.

Also enjoying the reissue of Mr. Beck's Odelay. I think I played it so much back when it came out I burned out on it and have forgotten how great it was. But it's a helluva record. The extra disc is pretty friggin great too!

Tupelo Honey, Wavelength and Into the Music in the VanM remasters series, and the first time I've heard them all too. TH comes over a bit thin in terms of material and production, Wavelength rushes at you like a big happy Irish wolfhound and rolls you over merrily (though you do wish that Pete Bardens had left his synth back at the oasis), and Into the music is just a stone cold masterpiece, truly joyous, soulful, flowing wonderment. He may be a miseryguts sometimes, but on form his bucket just goes straight down to that "cool water from the well."

Van exists on a spitual plain mere mortals couldn't possibly understand. It's no wonder he's wound so tightly. You've got to love him for it. He has beauty within him & can only express it through his songs. Bit of a King Midas syndrome thing going on there!

Randy Adams - Insurance Lawyer Soliloquy. As well as Brisbane and it's esoteric pronunciation of BrisBANE, Cover Me In Glory also made my ears prick up lyrically. It was great to hear Doubt Crowds The Door again too.

And 39.59 is a very Go-Betweens-esque album length.

Fine front and back cover shots too.

never heard this before--like it even more than "Distortion"! great cover of "4'33'" too.

Burial: Untrue

great songwriting (rolls eyes)--but it's good, really.

really excellent...better than their latest CD.

Lee 'Scratch' Perry - Megaton Dub Vol. 2 - this album seems to be an object of ridicule by critics and fans alike, but I actually think it's pretty cool. Some particularly eerie atmospheric stuff, in places.

King Tubby (and Prince Jammy) - Dub Gone 2 Crazy (love the persistent slamming of the reverb tank)

Luiz Bonfa & Maria Toledo - Braziliana

...more than just the girl Ewan! He bloody bought Northern Songs out from under the nose of the legitimate owners of the songs with that album. I'm sorry, but a pox on it! That was the sad beginning of the whole slide into insanity for Michael Jackson!! From memory, the face altering had begun! Skin whitening, artificial insemination of his "wife", dangling his own children out of windows, out of court settlements for alledged misconduct with children was to follow!!!
I will even blame Beyonce and Brittany Spears on that album!!! POX ON IT!!!!!!!

Julie Driscoll - 1969

Johnny Cash - Walking The Line... & Unearthed

Autechre - Quaristice

Nuyorican Soul - Nuyorican Soul
