I was a BC fan for years back in the day. I also read Bloom County and The Far Side. I don't read them anymore. |

I'll agree with Spence regarding Top Cat, my favorite cartoon! I even sprang for the DVD set. |

Top cat whilst eating Chips, fish fingers and beans at 5.40pm, just before Nationwide ? Didn't get the Top Cat - Sgt Bilko connection for years ! Hat's off too to Bugs and Daffy, especially when he gets his bill blown off in every episode. Talking of Bilko, that is a DVD set worth getting. Billy the Fish, a very very sharp satire of all my 60's/70's strip cartons in footy annuals where the crowd have the dialogue "Excellent save by the fish - man keeper" "yes, he's kept our cup dream alive but anything can happen over 90 minutes"... |

Micheael, in fit of madness, I bought the complete Far Side. It consists of two humungus 50 pound books that won't fit on any shelves. I have to keep it under my bed. And it's way too big n bulky to read the cartoons without getting a hernia of the intestines. I think if I even looked at one cartoon I'd have to wear one a those truss getups! That was sure a good purchase. And Dr, I luv that crazy orange cat, too! He eats way too much lazazna, though. |

I was flicking around the music channels last night and came across a Shakin' Stevens video - Green Door - and instantly thought of Billy The Fish when they signed him as their star striker...feckin hilarious.. Also Inspector Clouseau/Pink Panther (with Henry Mancini's music) were great as were the Ant and the Aardvark... |

Peanuts, in the years from its inception in the early 50s up through the early 70s holds up as pure greatness, and it's my favorite comfort food reading. Though it doesn't seem to have as many admirers as it once did, Doonesbury remains just about as sharp and funny as ever. Can't believe no one mentioned Calvin and Hobbes. Agreed on all the Far Side mentions. BC had a few good years, but these days when I think of it the first thing that comes to mind is all the right-wing and religious propaganda he kept slipping in during the final years. Warner Bros. cartoons remain my favorites - anarchy at its very best. I have fond memories of a few of the early Hanna-Barberas like the Flintstones and the Jetsons, but after awhile the limited animation looked like nothing but contempt for the viewer, and when it got to stuff like Scooby Doo, which set in stone the idea of the same goddamn story every week, I tuned out. A limited animation series that I loved, because there was a lot more going on upstairs: Rocky & Bullwinkle. As far as longform animated films, Hayao Miyazaki is lord and master, period. |

Warner Brothers, all the way, from the earliest Merrie Melodies to Tiny Toon Adventures, Taz-Mania and Hysteria. I also liked 'George of the Jungle', 'Dudley Do-Right', and Archie cartoons... the last not too far removed from the Monkees. |

I vote for Top Cat as well - the coolest (wasn't this re-titled 'Boss Cat' in the UK because of some weird BBC concern about it having the same name as a brand of UK catfood?!). Also have fond memories of Jonny Quest - a 60's boys-own cartoon from Hanna Barbara. Anyone else remember it? |

I remember "Johnny Quest" Mark! That show was coming on as I was starting to grow out of cartoon target age but I watched the first season or so. I haven't seen "Top Cat" in so many decades. That seemed like such an east coast cartoon to this Californian, very urban. It was a favorite. Elizabeth, I almost named the Archies' "Sugar Sugar" as one of those songs that gets stuck in my head and won't go away. There were several of the cartoon music shows. Do you remember "Josie & the Pussycats?" I was too young and stupid to get the charm of "Bullwinkle." Was that the show that had the "Mr. Wizard" skits in the middle? "Help, Mr. Wizard!" "Twinkle tinkle tizzle toe, time for this one to come home." (or something like that). Does anybody remember "Underdog?" That would be about the mid-60s. I don't remember it being a very good cartoon (with Sweet Polly Purebred and all) but I remember the theme song being great. |

Randy, until just now when I Googled around for a bit I'd always thought that both Bullwinkle and Underdog were done by the same people, because of the similar style of animation and humor. Turns out that was because both production companies farmed out the animation to a place in Mexico. Nowadays many people might be familiar with Underdog only because of a reportedly-lame movie version (using an actual dog) that passed quickly through movie theaters last summer. |

That was a fine one...and it had the added attraction of laying waste to all of "Fantasia"'s overseriousness in 7 minutes flat. |

I didn't realize "Underdog" had such a long-lasting impact. I thought it was short-lived as a TV series, a couple years at most. |

Though, as a friend pointed out, does the fact that in the unaltered strips the cat is his best friend and he talks to it incessantly more or less sad and crazy than if he's talking to invisible people? |
