I was really hoping that one of you Gobs geeks maybe able to tell me why Belle & Sebastian's ode to the Go-Betweens 'Shoot The Sexual Athlete' is so titled, its bugged me for years. I once asked Grant, he just got that cheeky Grant smile and didn't answer. After Grant died I became a little obsessed with finding out and emailed B&S's manager for a answer to avail. Anyone??? |

I'm sure everyone knows the lyrics but so you have them in front of you here they are...hilarious (fav - I secretly loved the big guy, he dressed like Sherlock Holmes) Now I'm in a band people try to make me do things Kiss arses and pay tribute But I'm inclined today to do those things anyway And I don't care who hears it 'Cause I'm a fan of the Go-Betweens A fan of Robert, and I always have been But I like Grant, now that I've met him Because he's charming Of all the stars, and all the would-be stars I'd take him home, to my mum and dad Yeah, he's charming, but he's a trouble-maker too He amuses me greatly I like Lindy and I saw Vickers Pete stole the set list, and the itinerary He wrote my name down as 'Tour Rent Boy' It was hard, but so is life I was making button badges And I had too much time on my hands I coloured them by hand Pere Ubu and the Sugarcubes Kids came in to watch me But Pete & Sean just scorned Just like they scorned Robert But I secretly loved the big guy He dressed like Sherlock Holmes And he fixed us with a quizzative eye Before singing such romances That only the sods trampled underfoot by Thatcher Could appreciate their love Could appreciate their love |

Reference to Truffaut's "Shoot The Piano Player" perhaps? Don't know this song, but I have to say the lyrics are horrible... |

They are not, they're hilarious. There was a massive mutual admiration thing between the Gobs and Belle and Sebastian. It only appeared on a B&S peel session. If anyone hasn't heard it and would like to let me know and I'll email an mp3 to you |

I'd have to side w/ Hugo, those lyrics are atrocious. It's nice that B&S dug the Go-Betweens and everything, but... |

in fact its so twee,it reminds me of poems that would be sent to and printed in Pastels et al fanzines in the mid 80's by twee girls and boys, with an idea for a lyric. |

Peter, please email me one...I don't get a huge negative reaction from the lyrics, and for me it's nigh upon impossible to say what I think until I hear them in the actual song. And Peter didn't say that B&S just dug the Go-Betweens, he said it was a mutual thing. |

As far as the title goes, maybe it's a play on Shoot the Piano Player? |

The Lyrics aren't Blake but nor are they supposed to be, its humorous and a nice tribute...Maybe you need to hear it to appreciate it, when I first heard it I couldn't stop laughing. I've uploaded it so all who are interested can direct download. I'm surprised few seem to of heard it. Let me know if your opinion of it improves with a listen. http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/11/17/ 1589516/Shoot%20The%20Sexual%20Athle te%201.mp3 |

The link does not work, it seems. I'd like to hear the song again: I've heard it once. I do not remember it as one of the most brilliant songs by B&S, it was shadowed by another (then) unrecorded song. |

The link works just fine, you just need to add the "te%201.mp3" to it. Lyrics are just fine! Don't be heartless, it's a fine little ditty. |

Peter I'm a great fan of B&S (who don't seem to be too popular here!), I'd recommend you send the question to the band on the main website...Stevie seems to answer a load of them, so he might be the best to ask!!! Cheers Jon |

so spence were any of those chuckles reserved for the song or did listening fail to improve your opinion. Its neither here nor there but the gobs were huge fans of b&s (including this track). Grant actually first told me of Belle and Sebastian, I thought they were a duo before hearing them (ala simon and garfukel) |

Hi Peter, I don't think, having listened to the song that its any good. It just doesn't do anything for me. its just OK. Its lyrics are like some Burroughs cut up thing. That's not to bad. I find B&S quite an overrated bunch, some great tunes, yeah but its just not my cuppa. IMHO |

I keep getting "file not found," and yes I was adding the "te%201.mp3" to it. Overall, I have to agree with Spence on the matter of B&S: definitely had some good tunes (especially on Tigermilk and Sinister), but generally very overrated/overhyped. |

Jeff, there's a blank inbetween some numbers in the first line that you have to delete (17/!!!!1589516/) then it should work...then it at least worked for me. |

It's a cute little ditty they probably threw together quickly just for the fun of it. It's kind of a sweet thing to do, really. I've always liked "Tigermilk" a great deal and find some amount of enjoyment in the subsequent records. But they did tend to turn the cute-o-meter way up, with the result that comparatively few of their songs had real emotional impact. I'm sure a part of my attitude is colored by watching Stuart Murdoch kiss hands at Hollywood Bowl with the LA Phil backing the band. No amount of drink could stop me thinking about how the Go Betweens should have been there instead. And then they became too proficient for their own good. Their latest work has devolved into a "name that tune" exercise where they impress with their ability to recreate the Zombies, or the Kinks, or Marc Bolan etc. Or even B&S now and then. |

I never "got" Belle and Sebastian until a few years ago. Now I think they are great. |
