OK, I was trying to avoid being the one to start the latest obit thread, but since the board's very quiet today...Ellas McDaniel. Influential's too small a word...every one of us has myriad records in their collection that were touched by him in some large or small way. |

Bo Diddley was the first concert I ever saw - in early 1973 at the Wellington Town Hall in NZ. Still etched on my brain. A great performance by a fine showman. As you say Allen, there must be loads of songs in my record collection based directly on that signature Bo Diddley rhythm - from 'Magic Bus' by The Who through to 'How Soon is Now' by the Smiths. |

Mark E Smith loved him, so thats good enough for me. Played his greatest hits on Chess records twice yesterday in tribute to him. |

Mark, you're right. One thing I haven't seen mentioned in all the obits is how great he was live. I saw him maybe four times, the first in 1984 where he managed to outshine both Chuck Berry and Willie Dixon at the Chicago Blues Fest. I was surprised how contemporary and fierce he sounded, especially compared to the old-timers he shared the bill with. One of the greats. |

Hats off to the gunslinger! Definitely one of the absolute greats and a true gentleman, badarse and scholar. Incredibly influential on the kind of music people on this board like. Semi-related news: the dude that invented Pringles died and was actually buried in a gigantic Pringles can. For some reason, that makees me happy! |

LK great story! I wonder what the inventor of the condom will be buried in!!!!?!?!! Yeah, RIP BO! I restarted my amateur musical career on a Bo square Epiphone, red and rectangley thing it was, beautiful sound too. It was one of the guitars our engineer Lee had in his studio when we forst started recording The Winnebago's. Thanks. |

I can just imagine he would've kept on strong into his later years, Rob...like artists as farflung as James Brown and Sonic Youth he had the intuitive ability (within a 2:20 minute song, no less) to create a groove that felt like it could roll on to eternity. |

Oh yeah what a man! "Spell it M-A-N... " He played his guitar like a drum & wound up influencing just about everyone that heard him. R.I.P. Bo! |
