The board has been in such a lull lately, that I thought it was time for a new list. Here's mine:

1. Eno - Taking Tiger Mountain

2. Sparks - Kimono My House

3. Sparks - Propaganda

4. Kraftwerk - Autobahn

5. John Cale - Fear

6. Roxy Music - Country Life

7. Jorge Ben - A Tabua de Esmeralda

8. Eno - Here Come the Warm Jets

9. Blue Oyster Cult - Secret Treaties

10. Faust - IV

11. Shuggie Otis - Inspiration Information

12. Kiss - Kiss

13. Thin Lizzy - Nightlife

14. Big Star - Radio City

A pretty exciting year for music, I'd say. What am I forgetting?

A-ha! I knew I forgot something. Add Neil Young's "On the Beach" to my list. Sometimes that is my favorite Neil Young album. Can't believe I overlooked that one.

Michael - I'm at work, so I can't check the date on my LP, but all online sources are telling me Warm Jets came out in early '74.

Oh, and I forgot to include Court and Spark, although I much prefer 1975's Hissing of Summer Lawns.

Jeff - Maybe it was was one of those London Calling deals where in was released late in the year in the UK and early the following year in the US?

I need to get 1975's Hissing of Summer Lawns. My favorite Joni of the few that I have is Blue.

1974's that I saw from your and Andreas's lists that look interesting:
Jorge Ben - A Tabua de Esmeralda
Sparks - Kimono My House
Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom
Shuggie Otis - Inspiration Information

And thanks guys for convincing me to get No Other
two years ago.

Speaking of 1974, Robyn Hitchcock wrote a song titled 1974.

1974

You have two coffees
One of them is one coffee too many for you
On a health kick
Trying to lead a middle-aged life
Well, it's either that or drop dead
Wait til you get older than this
And then turn around and tell me I was young for my age
Yeah

And it feels like nineteen seventy-four
Waiting for the waves to come and crash on the shore
But you're far in land
You're in funky denim wonderland
You and David Crosby and a bloke with no hand
You've got hair in places
Most people haven't got brains
Ooh

But it feels like nineteen seventy-four
Syd Barrett's last session, he can't sing anymore
He's gonna have to be Roger now for the rest of his life
Oh

Enough about me, let's talk about you
You were working at the earth exchange at half twenty-two
Rebel, Rebel was your favorite song
On the Archway Road Where it all belongs
All those molecules of time
That you thought you'd shed forever
All those inches of time
That you thought you could just say bye-bye

And as Nixon left the Whitehouse
You could hear people say,
"They'll never rehabilitate that mother
No way."
Yep

Whirry-whirry goes the helicopter out of my way
I've got president to dump in the void
Ooh

Python's last series and The Gaurdian said,
"The stench of rotting minds"
But what else could you smell back then?
You didn't have to inhale too hard
You could smell the heads festering in the backyard
There's a baby in a basket and it's taken your name
And one day it'll grow up and say,
"Who are you,
Eh?"

And you say that's where it ended
But I say no no no, it just faded away
August was grey
It feels like nineteen seventy-four
Ghastly mellow saxophones all over the floor
Feels like nineteen seventy-four
You could vote for labour, but you can't anymore
Feels like nineteen seventy-four
Digging Led Zeppelin in Grimsby
Oh Christ

You know, I've never warmed up to Zappa. Sure, the lyrics can be hilarious, but there's too much musical proficiency, not enough soul. His much publicized inability to "get" VU, for example, basically underscores why I can't get into his music.

But I've known a lot of people over the years who really admire the vast body of work. And he was definitely a sharp social commentator.

I do love that song "Peaches en Regalia" from Hot Rats, though.

Jeff, Also of note from Hot Rats, "Willie The Pimp" with the Captain on vocals. I got tired of Zappa soon after Sheik Yerbouti, perhaps his last funny album. He goes off the cliff in regards to the funny stuff on SY and nothing would ever be close to that, so he became a serious player. I never got into his later day serious stuff like Joe's Garage or the Shut Up shite, but I remember liking some of the earlier serious stuff mixed in a few lyrics, like the excellant Uncle Meat album.

I remember reading that Big Star's third album was recorded in 1974 but not released until later. If I consider it for 1974, it trumps everything else for the year. I have "Radio City" noted down as a 1973 release.

Absolutely "Grievous Angel." His last was his finest. And definitely "Taking Tiger Mountain."

And I add:

Toots & the Maytals--In the Dark. I am pretty sure this is a 1974 release but Jamaican albums frequently don't have copyright dates. Toots' greatest single album.

Randy, I think the recording of BS's Third/Sister Lovers actually finished in 1975, although I don't have my CD liner notes handy. I believe it didn't get released until 1978 for the first time. I have the second cd release on Ryko from 1992.
