State of Play. A great BBC series that finally showed up on DVD here. This shits reeeel good. Defnitely some good shit. Its gotta lotta my favorite Britich actors, like Bill Nighy, not to mention my homegurl Kelly McDonald.

I hear theyre going to make an Amercan version, but theyll probably fluck it up.

I've never understood this American concept of remaking things, films and Tv series and so on - why can't they just enjoy the originals? Which are, anyway, almost always superior. It's as if they can't relate to anything which doesn't have American people in American settings in it, whereas surely the joy of foreign TV and cinema is seeing how those other cultures work. Which is probably why when I was interrailing many years ago I had to try to explain to Yanks where Scotland was - most seemed to think it was "a little island off the coast of England, yeah?"

Exhibit A in the argument against Americans remaking British television is "Cracker." The original is a work of genius, one of my fave television series of all time. The American remake was terrible, inexcusable, entirely soulless.

"The Office" is obviously a notable (and perhaps the only) exception to the rule.

Stuart, I'm with you on the remaking issue for the most part. One great cinema exception I can think of is Maltese Falcon, which was finally made into a great movie on the third try in 1941. Recent Hollywood remakes have held little interest for me. I refuse to watch City of Angles, which is a remake of one of Wings Of Desire, one of my favorite films of all time.

Of course you could really argue on which Holmes-Watson paring is the best. I wish that Christopher Plummer and James Mason had a crack at some of the classic Holmes stories, as their H&W vs. Jack The Ripper movie Murder By Decree was a real cracker in my book.

The Wire, series 3. After the jolt to the senses that was the opening seaon and the tour de force that was the follow-up, I'm finding series 3 not quite as good as what came before. Still country miles ahead of anything else though.

IMO, give season 3 a little more time, Padraig. It might just be the "it's-no-longer-new-and-shocking" effect you're experiencing.

This is England.
A really moving film. I could relate to a lot of it, growing up in and around the skinhead fraternity of '82 and '83.
Its a film about hope and I really like Shane meadows, his take on life and his style of communication. Its from the heart.

Hotel Terminus: The Life and Times of Klaus Barbie

This is one of the great documentaries of all time about the Butcher Of Lyons, Klaus Barbie. I watched it on VHS years ago and can't believe a DVD doesn't exist. It's a long 4 1/2 hours, but never dull.

I did see that, way back when, also on VHS...and I agree with your assessment. I believe that's the same director who did the Sorrow and the Pity, one of those many classics I haven't gotten around to yet.

There Will Be Blood

I was a bit wary - especially because of the critical orgasm-fest - because I've never thought P.T. Anderson was all he was cracked up to be. ButIMO, this one delivers the goods. Darned haunting.

I though Mr. Lewis gave a fine performance. He's been a favorite actor of mine since the touching 1988 movie The Unbearable Lightness Of Being. My favorite P.T. Anderson movie still might be his first, Hard Eight. Magnolia and Boogie Nights had some very decent sections, but not all of the characters ring true for me.

That was sort of my problem too...it felt like both those films were far more show-offy displays of film technique with plots and characters that only seemed deep on the surface. This new one does give me a small urge to try Boogie Nights again, to see if I like it more. Not Magnolia, though...that movie gave me a flippin' headache.

I watched the Acoustic sessions from That Striped Sunlight DVD.

I hadn't seen it for quite some time. It made me smile. The love and chit chat interplay between the two of them. Robert makes me laugh most of the way through it, his humour in places, like the bit about how his guitar chords started to flow in his songwriting rather than all the usual duh duh duh thing. I laughed out loud.

Watching it again, you see the affinity, the way they make it all look so easy, the telepathy. I notice it was recorded day after the Tivoli gig, which proabably explains why Grant was a bit throaty.

Nevertheless, i am so pleased they recorded this get together, worth more than its weight in gold.

oh, and is that Donat at the front row? Donat?

Allen, season 3 of The Wire has revealed its charms. In fact it's magnificent. The whole city government sub-plot is terrific. The scence where McNulty makes an ass of himself with the small town sherrif is hilarious! I'm off to watch another episode right now.

Kevin, were you at Celtic Park last night? I got up at 4.45am to watch it live on TV here and I'm still buzzing from it. What a match! Nakamura's goal must be goal of the season.

A very enjoyable movie. Clever dialogue. A cool scene of Juno lusting after a vintage Les Paul. A way cool soundtrack. In short, lots to like about this movie.

A more clear-eyed, complex and darkly funny picture of dirty politics and grafters of its time than Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, which arrived a year earlier. ETM, if you've never seen it I get the feeling it'd probably be up your alley.

Finished Battlestar G. Season 3...sounds a little redundant to keep saying "brilliant, brilliant," but what else can one do and remain honest. The Dylan interwoven through the last episode was nicely done, too.

Lost 4, an enigma wrapped up in a riddle concealed in a farrago of ridiculously entertaining nonsense, with Michael Emerson giving what will surely be the performance of his life and worth a fistful of Emmies. Will it ever actually come to a proper end or will the writers simply throw up their hands and run screaming from the script room?

Extras, season 1. Pound-the-arm-of-one's-chair funny often enough, which is what matters most. During the parts where I'm not laughing, though, reservations come tiptoeing out: so far it feels (as in so many other shows these days) like he's running down a list of politically incorrect subjects (religion, check. racism, check), seemingly unaware that PI can get just as annoying and one-sided as PC. Also, the targets can feel obvious: Newsflash! Famous people might not be as nice as their public image makes them appear!

I'm Not There again, with the director's commentary. Once again Todd Haynes shows himself to be an extremely thoughtful and intelligent fellow, and his words help deepen the film a great deal.

Perfect casting: David Cross as Allen Ginsburg

It definitely makes Chapter 1, Volume 1 of the Music History book "What were they thinking?". Not much of a defence I suppose, but it WAS 1985!

Chapter two would probably be Shiny Happy People

Its a nice document to own however, for me, See, I have a problem with this video, as it was the OJ Mk111 line up, though Johnny and Paul Heard (very nice man, I met hm at this time) were reay session guys. Although Johnny looked briliant along with Edwyn at this time, it wasn't the same after Mclymont and Ross left. I was young at the time and I used to dress and walk around the streets looking like Edwyn, (the trendy lads i Lyle and Scott jumpers and puma trainers would hiss and throw things at me) up to this point I was so infatuated and in love with OJ, Josef K and Postcard, but this DVD kinda rang the death of my interest in OJ and i began to move on, it was a real pivitol moment for me at the tender age of 15. The original showing of this on TV prior to the video had a wonderful short interview with Grace, Ed's then girlfriend, now wife, shame they cut that.

Catherine it was srange in parts, but Edwyn was always a strange cat when it came to things like this, he was very creative when it came to things, like all of his drawings and stuff, he always had this classic illustrator style (see his drawings of birds) mixed with this Warholian pop art, see Rip it up sleeve etc.

Derek Jarman's work with the latter-day OJ is worth checking out though: he directed the promo for 'What Presence?!' and the TV ad for the (flop) third OJ long-player. The ad featured Zeke holding a large salmon and trying to keep a straight face.

With the mark 2 line-up I remember a long-drawn out 'In a Nutshell' in Edinburgh with Malcolm and Edwyn duelling like they were in Television. Superb.

Spence: you can probably find those who would argue that the departure of Daly and Kirk was the end of the 'pure' OJ!

Andrew, very true, the original OJ was very hard to beat. I love both the rawness of the original and the sleek funk of the second pretty much equally i guess. Anorak's might note that Ross was in the last stage line up of the original line up of OJ.

I'd love to see the Jarman vids/clips, any idea where I might find them?

Your note about Colins/Ross guitar workout, they were very good together. I was personally very influenced in my guitar playing style by the Ross, style, circa Josef K and his OJ work, and also influenced at the same time by Edwyn's raw, clanky, punky lead breaks, reminds me of the way Neil Young (Weld - massive influence on me again) used to just take off and never playthe same thing twice, a bit like Verlaine, where as his sparring partner Lloyd was clever enough to use his other worldy riffs time and time again.

I once had a go on Malcolm Ross vintage Strat, it was the heaviest Strat I had ever held, I think it was a '57 pre CBS. He sold it to keith richards' jeweller. I wanted Malc's Jaguar's but he sold them to Luke Haines when he played bass in The Auteurs.

Just when you really need it YouTube doesn't come up with the goods! The "What Presence?!" video was certainly on a NME video (Expresso Bongo?) and the TV ad might be on the DVD version of 'Phantasmagoria' (with Reading Festival footage).

Seen Malcolm play recently Spence ?

There was a bonus DVD that came with the European (?), (my copy came from Germany) release of Edwyn / OJ compilation "A casual introduction 1981 / 2001.
The DVD featured the videos for:
1. A girl like you
2. The magic piper of love
3. Johnny Teardrop
4. What Presence?!
You should be able to pick up a copy from gemm or ebay.de

I never really check this thread, as I don't have a TV. But I did find this on youtube last night: http://youtube.com/watch?v=7Zu0vAMkpag

A totally brand new Kids in the Hall sketch. For me, KItH are probably the most brilliant sketch comedy troupe to have ever existed (alongside Monty Python, of course). I hope this new sketch means there's more stuff to come. This sketch is as edgy and just plain weird as they ever were. I guess they're touring, and I'm sad that I missed 'em when they came through SF.

Final episode of Dexter tonight, which I'm looking forward to.
To change the subject....what aren't you watching - the fourth series of Battlestar Galactica. I don't know how I've always got something planned, or a gig to go to, or a cricket match to play, or car to wash, or knitting to do, or re-painting the scream....Just don't see to be able to manage to sit down and watch it - hopefully the DVD will be out and so will my excuses!

Cheers
Jon

Andrew you seen this? Its OK, better than nothing. Further down it states that its "a bit sad that josefk, net never gets updated" well, its is a bit shambolic, I must admit, but it has been updated with new pics in places its just that i can't do Flash so the home page says year 2000, but I tell ye, 8 years ago when I first designed the site for Josef K, no one gave a fu*k about them, so its better than nowt.

Home Again. A documnetary on Edwyn Collins and his recuperation into life.

An amazing, touching, beautiful programme.

Ed although, I'm not a massive fan of his solo stuff, is still an influence on me and has been for the last 28 years. I love the man. An this doc will show you why I love him.

I've just seen about 4 minutes of the Eurovision "song" contest semi-final. I've just watched it in 10-second intervals, it's as much as I can cope with in one go. Oh dear Gawd! Crimes against music!

I now know how it would feel to overdose on skittles and candyfloss which has been laced with LSD, only to then be beaten about the ears with a bag of spanners.

If you're not in Europe, be very very glad. If you are, trust me, do not turn on your TV!!

Oh the Humanity!!!!

Out of perversity and a nerdy desire to be caught up for the new movie, I've worked my way through all of the Indiana Jones movies again. Simple verdict: the first one still rocks, is just excitin as hell, funny, witty, totally transinds its source material. But the other two: oy vey. Suck city. Partiqurely the last one, even though it starred me countryman Sean Connry. Borin as hell - its like watching flies feck!

Ewan could be Michael J. Fox or Matthew Broderick.

I'm taking the whole family to see the new Indiana Jones film on Friday. Some things need the big screen, huge sound experience. I'm not expecting too many thrills on an intellectual plain. But derring-do with a touch of mild peril, also some coarse language will suffice!

I thought the 3rd Indiana Jones movie have some decent moments, certainly a big improvement over the second one.

The U-Boat in the first IJ movie was the same one that Wolfgang Peterson used earlier for filming Das Boot.

Repulsion

Polanski classic with Catherine Deneuve as a sexually repressed young woman going slowly, completely out of her mind. Right up there on the list of creepiest films ever. Very ill-served on home video for a long time...the previous VHS edition had a cruddy picture and out-of-sync sound. The DVD at least fixed the latter.

Some Came Running. With Sinatra, Dean Martin and Shirley McLaine. Serprisingly compelling melodrama, with a noirish tinge based on a book by the great WWII scribe James Jones. Sinatra was a more than decent actor and believe it or not so was Dino: "I don't like nobody to mess with my hat!"....

I'll actually say a few kind words for Temple of Doom. Yes, the dialogue is lamer than lame compared to the first one, there's a 20-minute dead stretch early on, and both Kate Capshaw and the annoying kid should've been abandoned in a snowbank or something. But every one of the (many) action sequences is a well-orchestrated killer, with just the right amount of knowingness about how completely absurd it is...and personally that's all I really want from an Indiana Jones movie. The tipping point for many people is the bit where the mining car jumps off the end of the broken track, flies over the gap and lands neatly on the track on the other side. I've seen many people groan and roll their eyes, but it makes me laugh more every time I see it.

Roman Holiday.
One of those what you might call Comfort Films - along with Zulu, Spartacus, Day of the Jackal, Die Hard,Ulzana's Raid,3 Days of the Condor, the Apartment etc - that I can never resist catching if it's on. Two great beauties: Rome in the 1950s just before mass tourism hits it and the big financial upswing, and the luminously young Ms Hepburn. The camera swings from one to the other with greedy disbelief.

A made for HBO movie about the tainted vote count in Florida in the 2000 US Presidential election. Kevin Spacey is very good in it and Laura Dern is a scream portraying the GOP Florida Secretary of State dimwit Kathleen Harris.

Shield season 5...sort of John Webster to the Wire's Shakespeare, just bloody and brutal and bang bang bang. The last two episodes move up into a glorious hellish darkness that is just wonderful and Forrest Whitaker makes as much as he can out of a tingling speech consisting mainly of the verb "piss".

The Stanley Cup Finals, my Detroit Red Wings are 1 game away from bringing home the cup to Detroit for the 11th time. Hopefully they do just that on Monday night. They still have a way to go to catch up to the Toronto Maple Leafs, who have won 13 cups, although they haven't won one since 1967. Montreal has an incredible 24 Stanley Cups, the last being 1993.

i saw miss pettigrew... yesterday. it was good fun....like really good candy i suppose. or rather, like a musical but without any singing or dancing. two charming enough stars....i've certainly had worse sunday nights.

BSG, Season 4. Jonathan, if you haven't started watching yet, you might want to try and catch up on the Sci-Fi network site...I really think they're going to manage to keep it just as great all the way to the finish line...a complete, satisfying story with themes and subthemes and deep emotion and complexity up the wazoo.

The Dirty Harry Collection. Extremely enjoyable watching, even if none of them were as good as the first, which was stellar. Sudden Impact isn't bad though - Clint actually directed it and you can tell.

But I'm enjoying every high caliber, politically incorrect, shoot first ask questions later second of it. What's a little funny to me is that the violence, so shocking when I was a kid, now seems pretty tame by today's standards.

"Do you feel lucky, punk?"

Tin Man - the SCFI 4 part remake of The Wizard of Oz, on DVD.

It's been a while since I've seen any of the Dirty Harry movies. I tend to prefer Clint's Westerns, although I like the first DH and non-DH detective movie from the 80's set in Naw'leans with the lovely Genevieve Bujold. I think the Unforgiven is the best movie he's ever done. I also really liked the Charlie Parker movie he produced, Bird.

I love about 3/4 of Eastwood's film "A Perfect World." There were some great, deftly acted scenes in there, marred by some jarring, "Smokey and the Bandit"-style slapstick. Almost a damn fine movie.

Thirded on Perfect World...I liked how so many times it looked like a scene (or the storyline in general) was heading for some standard movie cliche but it would then turn on a dime and head off in some other direction. I even enjoyed Eastwood's role, which seemed like a joke on himself - he spends most of the movie ineffectually riding around in that motorhome with a goofy grin, continually losing Costner's trail.

Actually I believe Eastwood directed Bird, too...certainly liked that one a lot. When he's not on his game his movies can be plodding to an almost excrutiating degree, but he is capable of magic.

Indeed, that's a pretty good one, spence, I've seen that a couple of times. Very late-60s surreal/patchwork vibe to it, directed by Brian De Palma. There's a sequel called Hi, Mom! (also with DeNiro) that's even better.

"The Other Boleyn Girl". Not great, but a good chick flick to serve you in good stead with the missus. Scarlett and Natalie were pretty adorable in it, though I realize now that Natalie's a much better actress. Kind of a bummer at the end though. Gotta say: ol' Henry sure had a novel solution for relationships that have gone stale, though I doubt Dr. Phil would approve!

Yesterday's climactic end to the US Open. I don't golf, but I know historic competition when I see it. I like Tiger just fine, and he's some kind of superhero on the course, but it was hard not to root for Mediate, especially for hanging with Woods mano-y-mano for 18 holes. I hope he's damn proud of himself. It was quite an achievement.

Knowing Me, Knowing You with Alan Partridge: of the 8,233 parodies of talk shows in existence it's right up there near the top.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Extraterrestrial Skull: oh darn, I gave the ending away. Good fun, a worthy successor. My only fear going in was that Harrison would be too old and/or too stone-faced to pull the part off, but he did very well.

thought the same as you ewan on the other boleyn girl....not a bad film by any stretch, but still a bit daytime-oriented i suppose. it was nice to see scarlett play mary as many would argue she'd be the most obvious choice for anyone to play ann. natalie portman's an incredible talent indeed....she always ends up in pretty average films though. she's also perhaps the most classically beautiful woman in hollywood at the moment, which don't hurt much. ok, i shall gush no more.

i just finished the second series of weeds. i love it. even though it's always going to come off a little forced (inveitable given the content), it's still able to land the big blows. an incredible season finale....mary louise parker is sublime.

Burn Notice. Trashy, but dazzlingly entertaining show about a spy who's gotten fired, or "burned" in spook parlance and his quest to find out who fecked him over...Kind of a cross between LeCarre and MacGyver. A big plus is that it features the great cult B-movie actor, Bruce Campbell, and his mighty, Buick-sized chin.

Wall-E

Hey, I'm a Pixar sucker. Not only did it have me at the point of getting choked up over a couple of flippin' robots, it managed to pull off an Also Spake Zarathustra reference that was both very apropos AND funny...no small accomplishments. And amazing to look at, though you knew that already.

Fred Astaire playing a cover version of the famous J Geils Band harmonica blow-out 'Whammer Jammer'.

Man that guy can play the blues harp almost as well as he can dance!

LOVE story on DVD.

I'm half way through it. Very fascinating. I adore this band. I was completely hooked on Forver Changes without them even having to try. I've always been in awe of the band and THAT album. This docu is great, esp given that Art and Bryan are no more (RIP), but it sheds some light into the mystery, without giving the game away. I also like seeing the ARt, he's cool, arrogant, but gives off odd bursts of warmth throughout, which I like, it shows he has a heart, as well as the extreme creativity to his nature. On the flipside, how could one not immediately adore Jonny Echols, he's a sweet man, and a nice set of dentures, the kinda smile Fred wears in Scooby Doo!

Just watched the final episode of Dr Who, which was very good. So many Dalek's make me a bit strange....
The 2nd series of Dexter starts tonight in the UK, so I'll give that a view. The 1st series was excellent, and I'm just hoping that its not going to be one of those things that should be left at the end of the 1st series.

The DVD of the complete Absolutely arrived last week. It was a a comedy series from probably the early 1990's and I'm just going to have to book a week off work to see how its dated.

Cheers
Jon

Spence, you had me worried for a second - I thought you were sitting through that old 1970's turkey with Ali McGraw and Ryan O Neal. Don't they die at the end of that? If they don't they should...

King Of The Hill, season 5. I love how the people grow with the series rather than just perenially stay the same age.

Ashes to Ashes Episode1 The series has just started on Irish TV.

For those of you who've already seen it on BBC - is it supposed to be that funny? And hey, even if it turns out to be crap, I'll have fun counting just how many cliches they can fit into one episode!

I usually take a dim view of graphic novels (for people who can't be arsed to read actual novels) and animated movies (I call em feckin cartoons - I used to watch em on Saturday mornings, but left that behind, with short pants and toy soldiers), but Persepolis is really great. Harrowing and truly moving. Ewan tries not to say this, but it's a must-see!

Or was that just a bit of ironic "fun"?
