I've never understood this American concept of remaking things, films and Tv series and so on - why can't they just enjoy the originals? Which are, anyway, almost always superior. It's as if they can't relate to anything which doesn't have American people in American settings in it, whereas surely the joy of foreign TV and cinema is seeing how those other cultures work. Which is probably why when I was interrailing many years ago I had to try to explain to Yanks where Scotland was - most seemed to think it was "a little island off the coast of England, yeah?" | ||

Stuart, I'm with you on the remaking issue for the most part. One great cinema exception I can think of is Maltese Falcon, which was finally made into a great movie on the third try in 1941. Recent Hollywood remakes have held little interest for me. I refuse to watch City of Angles, which is a remake of one of Wings Of Desire, one of my favorite films of all time. Of course you could really argue on which Holmes-Watson paring is the best. I wish that Christopher Plummer and James Mason had a crack at some of the classic Holmes stories, as their H&W vs. Jack The Ripper movie Murder By Decree was a real cracker in my book. | ||

There Will Be Blood I though Mr. Lewis gave a fine performance. He's been a favorite actor of mine since the touching 1988 movie The Unbearable Lightness Of Being. My favorite P.T. Anderson movie still might be his first, Hard Eight. Magnolia and Boogie Nights had some very decent sections, but not all of the characters ring true for me. | ||

That was sort of my problem too...it felt like both those films were far more show-offy displays of film technique with plots and characters that only seemed deep on the surface. This new one does give me a small urge to try Boogie Nights again, to see if I like it more. Not Magnolia, though...that movie gave me a flippin' headache. | ||

I watched the Acoustic sessions from That Striped Sunlight DVD. I hadn't seen it for quite some time. It made me smile. The love and chit chat interplay between the two of them. Robert makes me laugh most of the way through it, his humour in places, like the bit about how his guitar chords started to flow in his songwriting rather than all the usual duh duh duh thing. I laughed out loud. Watching it again, you see the affinity, the way they make it all look so easy, the telepathy. I notice it was recorded day after the Tivoli gig, which proabably explains why Grant was a bit throaty. Nevertheless, i am so pleased they recorded this get together, worth more than its weight in gold. oh, and is that Donat at the front row? Donat? | ||

Allen, season 3 of The Wire has revealed its charms. In fact it's magnificent. The whole city government sub-plot is terrific. Its a nice document to own however, for me, See, I have a problem with this video, as it was the OJ Mk111 line up, though Johnny and Paul Heard (very nice man, I met hm at this time) were reay session guys. Although Johnny looked briliant along with Edwyn at this time, it wasn't the same after Mclymont and Ross left. I was young at the time and I used to dress and walk around the streets looking like Edwyn, (the trendy lads i Lyle and Scott jumpers and puma trainers would hiss and throw things at me) up to this point I was so infatuated and in love with OJ, Josef K and Postcard, but this DVD kinda rang the death of my interest in OJ and i began to move on, it was a real pivitol moment for me at the tender age of 15. The original showing of this on TV prior to the video had a wonderful short interview with Grace, Ed's then girlfriend, now wife, shame they cut that. Catherine it was srange in parts, but Edwyn was always a strange cat when it came to things like this, he was very creative when it came to things, like all of his drawings and stuff, he always had this classic illustrator style (see his drawings of birds) mixed with this Warholian pop art, see Rip it up sleeve etc. | ||

Derek Jarman's work with the latter-day OJ is worth checking out though: he directed the promo for 'What Presence?!' and the TV ad for the (flop) third OJ long-player. The ad featured Zeke holding a large salmon and trying to keep a straight face. With the mark 2 line-up I remember a long-drawn out 'In a Nutshell' in Edinburgh with Malcolm and Edwyn duelling like they were in Television. Superb. Andrew, very true, the original OJ was very hard to beat. I love both the rawness of the original and the sleek funk of the second pretty much equally i guess. Anorak's might note that Ross was in the last stage line up of the original line up of OJ. I'd love to see the Jarman vids/clips, any idea where I might find them? Your note about Colins/Ross guitar workout, they were very good together. I was personally very influenced in my guitar playing style by the Ross, style, circa Josef K and his OJ work, and also influenced at the same time by Edwyn's raw, clanky, punky lead breaks, reminds me of the way Neil Young (Weld - massive influence on me again) used to just take off and never playthe same thing twice, a bit like Verlaine, where as his sparring partner Lloyd was clever enough to use his other worldy riffs time and time again. I once had a go on Malcolm Ross vintage Strat, it was the heaviest Strat I had ever held, I think it was a '57 pre CBS. He sold it to keith richards' jeweller. I wanted Malc's Jaguar's but he sold them to Luke Haines when he played bass in The Auteurs. | ||

I'll actually say a few kind words for Temple of Doom. Yes, the dialogue is lamer than lame compared to the first one, there's a 20-minute dead stretch early on, and both Kate Capshaw and the annoying kid should've been abandoned in a snowbank or something. But every one of the (many) action sequences is a well-orchestrated killer, with just the right amount of knowingness about how completely absurd it is...and personally that's all I really want from an Indiana Jones movie. The tipping point for many people is the bit where the mining car jumps off the end of the broken track, flies over the gap and lands neatly on the track on the other side. I've seen many people groan and roll their eyes, but it makes me laugh more every time I see it. | ||

One of those what you might call Comfort Films - along with Zulu, Spartacus, Day of the Jackal, Die Hard,Ulzana's Raid,3 Days of the Condor, the Apartment etc - that I can never resist catching if it's on. Two great beauties: Rome in the 1950s just before mass tourism hits it and the big financial upswing, and the luminously young Ms Hepburn. The camera swings from one to the other with greedy disbelief. | ||

The Stanley Cup Finals, my Detroit Red Wings are 1 game away from bringing home the cup to Detroit for the 11th time. Hopefully they do just that on Monday night. They still have a way to go to catch up to the Toronto Maple Leafs, who have won 13 cups, although they haven't won one since 1967. Montreal has an incredible 24 Stanley Cups, the last being 1993. | ||

i saw moliere the other night which was great. definitely one of the best french films i've sat through in a long time. two solid thumbs up....sweet, funny, tragic and very few pretensions to boot. not that i mind or or two myself... i saw miss pettigrew... yesterday. it was good fun....like really good candy i suppose. or rather, like a musical but without any singing or dancing. two charming enough stars....i've certainly had worse sunday nights. | ||

The Dirty Harry Collection. Extremely enjoyable watching, even if none of them were as good as the first, which was stellar. Sudden Impact isn't bad though - Clint actually directed it and you can tell. But I'm enjoying every high caliber, politically incorrect, shoot first ask questions later second of it. What's a little funny to me is that the violence, so shocking when I was a kid, now seems pretty tame by today's standards. "Do you feel lucky, punk?" | ||

Tin Man - the SCFI 4 part remake of The Wizard of Oz, on DVD. It's been a while since I've seen any of the Dirty Harry movies. I tend to prefer Clint's Westerns, although I like the first DH and non-DH detective movie from the 80's set in Naw'leans with the lovely Genevieve Bujold. I think the Unforgiven is the best movie he's ever done. I also really liked the Charlie Parker movie he produced, Bird. | ||

I love about 3/4 of Eastwood's film "A Perfect World." There were some great, deftly acted scenes in there, marred by some jarring, "Smokey and the Bandit"-style slapstick. Almost a damn fine movie. | ||

Thirded on Perfect World...I liked how so many times it looked like a scene (or the storyline in general) was heading for some standard movie cliche but it would then turn on a dime and head off in some other direction. I even enjoyed Eastwood's role, which seemed like a joke on himself - he spends most of the movie ineffectually riding around in that motorhome with a goofy grin, continually losing Costner's trail. Actually I believe Eastwood directed Bird, too...certainly liked that one a lot. When he's not on his game his movies can be plodding to an almost excrutiating degree, but he is capable of magic. | ||

"The Other Boleyn Girl". Not great, but a good chick flick to serve you in good stead with the missus. Scarlett and Natalie were pretty adorable in it, though I realize now that Natalie's a much better actress. Kind of a bummer at the end though. Yesterday's climactic end to the US Open. I don't golf, but I know historic competition when I see it. I like Tiger just fine, and he's some kind of superhero on the course, but it was hard not to root for Mediate, especially for hanging with Woods mano-y-mano for 18 holes. I hope he's damn proud of himself. It was quite an achievement. | ||

thought the same as you ewan on the other boleyn girl....not a bad film by any stretch, but still a bit daytime-oriented i suppose. it was nice to see scarlett play mary as many would argue she'd be the most obvious choice for anyone to play ann. natalie portman's an incredible talent indeed....she always ends up in pretty average films though. she's also perhaps the most classically beautiful woman in hollywood at the moment, which don't hurt much. ok, i shall gush no more. i just finished the second series of weeds. i love it. even though it's always going to come off a little forced (inveitable given the content), it's still able to land the big blows. an incredible season finale....mary louise parker is sublime. | ||

Burn Notice. Trashy, but dazzlingly entertaining show about a spy who's gotten fired, or "burned" in spook parlance and his quest to find out who fecked him over...Kind of a cross between LeCarre and MacGyver. A big plus is that it features the great cult B-movie actor, Bruce Campbell, and his mighty, Buick-sized chin. | ||

LOVE story on DVD. I'm half way through it. Very fascinating. I adore this band. I was completely hooked on Forver Changes without them even having to try. I've always been in awe of the band and THAT album. This docu is great, esp given that Art and Bryan are no more (RIP), but it sheds some light into the mystery, without giving the game away. I also like seeing the ARt, he's cool, arrogant, but gives off odd bursts of warmth throughout, which I like, it shows he has a heart, as well as the extreme creativity to his nature. On the flipside, how could one not immediately adore Jonny Echols, he's a sweet man, and a nice set of dentures, the kinda smile Fred wears in Scooby Doo! | ||

Just watched the final episode of Dr Who, which was very good. So many Dalek's make me a bit strange.... The 2nd series of Dexter starts tonight in the UK, so I'll give that a view. The 1st series was excellent, and I'm just hoping that its not going to be one of those things that should be left at the end of the 1st series. The DVD of the complete Absolutely arrived last week. It was a a comedy series from probably the early 1990's and I'm just going to have to book a week off work to see how its dated. Cheers Jon | ||

I usually take a dim view of graphic novels (for people who can't be arsed to read actual novels) and animated movies (I call em feckin cartoons - I used to watch em on Saturday mornings, but left that behind, with short pants and toy soldiers), but Persepolis is really great. Harrowing and truly moving. Ewan tries not to say this, but it's a must-see! | ||
