I don't know when I'll be finished with these great videos. The 1988 interview, primarily with Grant, is really interesting. His comments about Brisbane's hyper development--still continuing to this day--are fascinating considering how I experienced the town. He hates the shiny new downtown which wasn't there when he lived there whereas for me, seeing it all for the first time in 2007, it was kind of a cool compact little Emerald City forming a backdrop to the surrounding hills. I love the way he doesn't miss a chance to slag the city throughout the interview. We can certainly assume he had no clue whatsoever that he'd be returning, let alone actually die there. He must have made his peace with Brisbane by the time he wrote "Lamp by Lamp." Amazing that Wilsteed pretty much introduced himself with his declaration that he has a drinking problem.

Yeah, Zelig is some kind of saint.

These are excellent thanks whoever!

Wilsteed looks so, so so out of place on some of the live clips here. He just looks, er, crap!

PS Grant obviously never found a reputable PR company to sort Wilsteed's image out!

With the blond hair, Robert looks a little like Bea Arthur, TV's Maude.

Not that there's anything wrong with that...

I love how in that Brisbane interview w/ Grant and Wilsteed, Robert looks like a cross between a male model and a motorcycle cop with that feathery hair and those cop glasses.

Around '88/'89, only rock stars from oz looked cool in aviator's, cave, forster, graney, mccomb et al

The more I see Wilsteed on stage with robert, grant, lindy and amanda I mean, Wilsteed, Jeesuus, no way was he a match for vickers, no way man! vickers was the best, coolest looking bassist around, he was the thumb plucking bass king. wilsteed haS NONE OF THAT!!!

Spence - I agree, there's just no beating Vickers. He was the essence of cool, stylish and dapper (how I would love to have some of his suits - I'd wear them all the time, everywhere...), an awesome bassist, and a hot dancer, to boot!

But, in Wilsteed's defence, I do have to say that, according to the Nichols biography, Wilsteed had a huge hand in shaping the songs on 16LL. He apparently added many of the lead melodic guitar parts (like that cool solo in Streets - for example) and some of those basslines weren't too shabby.

But in terms of style, he sure as hell wasn't Vickers.

Actually, the more I think about it, Robert Forster looks more like an extra from Top Gun with those aviator glasses and short fluffy hair.

Jeff

Yes that lead acoustic sol inStreets was and still is absolutely wonderful, I found his bass playing pretty pedestrian.

Willstead was understated on stage which is ok by me. It's great to see this stuff. I had some of it on video, and then my car got knicked, recovered and crushed before I had a chance to recover the video from under the seat. If you wait long enough you, everything comes back ...

OK I know that there are slightly more important things in life, but this bugs me! When I add a new topic mentioning Grant solo radio sessions (from Scandinavian) to download it gets deleted by the board administrator.

So can someone explain to me exactly why that is so different to this thread, pointing out a wealth of (visual) material on YouTube.

Presumably neither are 'authorised' by the bands management ?

For me Wilsteed looked simply disinterested and bored the couple of times I saw him play with the band.

I heart Zelig!

I sense a "sick day" coming on - sitting watching these for the day is therapy of course!

Someone has posted possibly the 2nd campest Go-betweens video i've ever seen:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKInZI_eo Hw

It's a shame robert wasn't prepared to put his dancing shoes on that day...

Extremely frustrating! I got to watch about a minute of it, before it stalled, and now it seems to have been removed completely.

I saw enough to know what you're getting at, though, Allan. There might have even been a time when Robert would even have been persuaded to put on one of those fetching little frocks!

That's odd. It still works for me.

Persevere if you can, as the look on Grant's face as he joins in with the dance moves is beautiful.

Great stuff indeed. Grant looks totally buff, lean and mean. One question: what's the significance of the Birnham Wood reference? A quick Wiki of the term revealed no obvious conclusions...

Definitely worth persevering! Robert's expression is classic - like the very patient big brother who got the job of chaperoning all those crazy kids!

I am above such frivilous behaviour!

Is n't Birnham Wood in Macbeth possibly Burnham Wood? One of the safeguards for Macbeth is he will be king until Birnham Wood comes to Dunsinane? However as I did not spot it in the video I have no idea if this is helpful.
