As a former Columbus resident, I wouldn't be surprised if he does okay there. A 70,000 student university should be able to cough up enough GBs fans to make the trip worth RF's while. What I'm concerned about is that this is the sole Midwest date. Please tell me he'll share some love with Chicago, at least. | ||

Well, I finally got off my lazy butt and bought a couple of dinner tickets for the SF show for myself and the friend who treated me to Feist at the Hollywood Bowl. It's midweek so it'll probably be a surgical strike on Southwest for me. I'm sure Jeff will be attending this show. Anyone else? I'm still hoping that I find a way to do the Columbus show because the VU covers will be a lot of fun but I have a familial undertow clipping my wings at the moment. | ||

Yup, I'll be there for sure. I'm still shocked that there's no LA show. In fact, I'm shocked that the SF show is the *only* show he's playing that's west of the Mississippi. | ||

Is anyone going to the Columbus concert? We are driving from Chicago tomorrow morning. Does anyone need a ride? The setlist from the Brisbane Velvet shows last December was a good choice of tunes and I am hoping that he will play a second set of his tunes. I will write back with a review after the concert. | ||

Oh, man, Fred, I wish I'd known someone from Chicago was going to Columbus. As a fellow Chicagoan, now I feel... what, like a bum? A bad fan? A slacker? I kept thinking there would be a Chicago show added. Damn. Have a great time. I know that drive to Columbus well (too well, in fact) so bring lots of music and prepare to be bored for six hours! | ||

The Columbus Velvet Underground concert was magical plus he ended it with six of his own songs. The hall at the Wexner Center of the Arts had tin foil wallpaper, silver balloons (I.e. Warhol "Silver Clouds"), a disco ball, and a screen behind the band flickering black and white close-ups of various Warhol associates. They played for an hour and twenty minutes with no encore. Robert told the audience that it was the best of the four Velvet concerts that they have done. He also told the audience that "Loaded" was his favorite Velvet Underground record. The setlist was as follows: Oh! Sweet Nuthin (which they only played 3/4 of with the background music and house lights still on. He said that they did it without a rehearsal. They also played it before the scheduled start time of 8:00 pm.) Sunday Morning (the first Velvet song that he had ever heard.) I'm Waiting for My Man There She Goes Again Candy Says We're Gonna Have a Real Good Time Together (The only Velvet song that he had played with the Go-Betweens back in 1978.) Who Loves the Sun Stephanie Says Pale Blue Eyes What Goes On Temptation Inside Your Heart Sweet Jane I Can Do (with Glenn on Drums and a bass solo from Adele) Head Full of Stream Surfing Magazines Dive for the Memory (which was the first time that the new drummer Matthew had played the tune) German Farmhouse Spring Rain | ||

It was raining cats and dogs over the weekend, so I skipped the long drive to the Columbus gig. VU's self titled 3rd album is my favorite by a smidge over the first album. Loaded would have been a better album if more of the songs were recorded with Lou's vocals instead of Doug Yule's. Lou left the band before the album was completed though, right? | ||

Yes, it was not a fun drive to and from Columbus. I agree with you about the "Loaded" album but I can see why it would be Robert's favorite Velvet Underground album, which he joked about not trying to be controversial. It is a great set of rock songs but the recording could have been better. | ||

Not that I ever post or anything...but today I'm getting a respite from talking at work as my voice is shot, so I have some time. I actually went to the Columbus show and took a bus from Buffalo (great way to avoid the rain, awful way for comfort). For me it wasn't that it was so rainy as so hot, I guess my Buffalonian hide cannot take that sort of heat. I thought the show was fantastic, I really loved the entire setup. I ended up taking a lot of pictures, if any of them turn out I'll be sure to post them. |
