The Stag's Head is always good though could be busy on a Friday evening. Culture Night is on in Dublin tomorrow night so everywhere may be a bit busier too. Upstairs in the Lord Edward across from Christchurch, Bowes on Fleet St and the Halfpenny Inn on the quays are all good down to earth pubs too. The Oak is just beside Reids on Dame St, nice wooden interior and probably the closest to the venue of all those. Last time I was at this venue I saw Screaming Jay Hawkins in a bottle green suit and cape. Hope this gig is as memorable, should be.. | ||

Robert was in magnificent form last night - he was actually standing on the unlit stage for the best part of 8 minutes ;) waiting for the sound engineer to make his way back to the desk, such was his eagerness to get proceedings underway. It was clear from the outset that Robert was 'in the zone' and what followed could be described as a joyous celebration of his wonderful career. The acoustic set didn't deviate hugely from previous nights - he opened with 'Something for Myself' but did not play 'Girl Lying on a beach'. As usual this part of the show ended with a great, full-band version of 'I'm Allright'. The band returned and burned through the set as expected - personal stand-outs were (among many others)'Clouds', 'Pandanus', 'Darlinghurst Nights' ("this is about me in 1983, September, a Monday .... at 2.30"), 'Head Full of Steam', 'Make her Day' (complete with one-note solo) and a barnstorming 'German Farmhouse' but this was a powerful performance from start to finish. About six songs in to the second set Robert gathered the band into a huddle before promptly disappearing from the stage for a few minutes. It was obvious that 'Quiet Heart' was being called into action - Adele and Glen improvised wonderfully and by the time Robert re-emerged avec-harmonica they had passed the point of no-return. I say this because Robert, for the briefest of seconds, looked aghast at the capo on Glen's guitar as there seemed to be some confusion over which key they were supposed to be in ... Anyway, despite this minor distraction they managed to pull it off and a fine version it was too. The band were very, very tight - Glen's guitar work really impressed me. For the record, his acoustic guitar is a Martin - probably the OO or OM model. Adele, as ever, was the band's engine-room. It turns out that Matthew Harrison, even though he looks 15, is actually 21 years old. He was on the money throughout. Anyway, having trawled through most (if not all) of the reviews on this board, I was still bowled over by last night's performance. It was a comforting nod to the legacy of The Go-Betweens and a reminder that, above all, the music still matters to Robert Forster. | ||

Friday was terrific. I don't have much to Pat's comments which are spot on. Venue was great. We'd have had more tunes, I think, if, as Pat observed, sound people were in place at start and band weren't ordered to finish up at end! It was turned into some DJ-disco type affair: I didn't hang around ... well, not for too long! I think some were caught out by the 'early' start. The place started to fill up from 9 onwards and the atmosphere really built up from there onwards. I think the break is very effective: it really has people revved up for second part. Or this may simply be the way it worked on me! I was dissaponted to have missed about 20 minutes of the acoustic set as town was busier due to Culchie Night, and it was difficult to get parking, and Robert was in a hurry to get started early. What I did see was the best of the three solo Forster shows that I've been to. He just seemed to play the best versions of a good many songs that I'd seen him perform before. He seemed very energized and looked to be really enjoying himself up there. I echo Pat's thoughts above re:the band, incredibly tight. Highlights for me were Quiet Heart(shivers down my back bone)Heart Out To Tender, I Can Do,Here Comes A City, 121, Did She Overtake You, Make Her Day(what axemanship with that one note solo Pat?!)and heretofore my least favourite Robert song, German Farmhouse. That's probably too many highlights but there were lots more besides, it was that sort of night, if only I could have gotten there earlier! | ||

Interesting to hear your comments, Peter. Where were you for the other two? As it hasn't been mentioned by anyone else for a highlight, I think I have to add, for what it's worth, Darlinghurst Nights. The played a sequence towards the end about four times. What does "Culchie Night" mean Peter? As a non-Dubliner (though one who spent a quarter of his life working/studying there) I think I should be offended! (Something to do with the All-Ireland?). | ||

Hi Fitzer, I had previously seen Robert play The Mean Fiddler, Dublin in '96 & '98. On the warm nights tour he looked extremely stylish in a canary yellow suit, I think it's the same as the one he wore in the "Crying Love" video, it might be on You Tube. Culchie night was a cross between Culture night (a series of late night events and gallery openings) and the influx for the all Ireland weekend Padraig, I'm from outside The Pale too! |
