Nothing new planned for Ireland I'm afraid Catherine - just more of the same - shootings, traffic jams, cycle lanes that run into hording, quangos, job losses, all that sort of embarrassing stuff ... you know yourself. The weather isn't bad at the moment however ... kind of the balmy weather that always appears around exam time and disappears shortly thereafter ... I'd say RF would be interested in playing Dublin - the GB's didn't play Ireland last time 'round. I'll just check if I have enough in my piggy bank ... €2.50, yeah - that should be enough ... | ||

Hi Jonathan, I can highly recommend to come to cologne. Flights are cheap, tickets are cheaper than in the uk, there is always a wonderful crowd and the Gloria is a former theatre. I can think of close to 10 Michigan folk who would make a road trip, assuming that Robert will skip our fair state again like the G-B's did in 2005. Thankfully Robert and Grant tour stopped in Pontiac, MI in 1999 at the now defunkt 7th House, which was 15 minutes from my house. Nice venue that, I also saw a great Aimee Mann show there back in 1996. | ||

One night we were out to dinner with a friend of mine, who's a longtime pilot for United Airlines. I asked him if, in the course of the millions of miles he's logged, he'd ever been scared during a flight, or even had the inkling he might not make it into port. He just said, "no, never, not once." Great night last night ( Manchester) similar to befroe Robert out for a few acoustic songs then full band. Highlights Rock and Roll Friend, a long preable to She Sang about Angels and the song it self, Head Full of Steam, Quiet Heart, The Evangelist, Pandanus ( excellent live) and People Say. The venue was small and intimate about 300 people there. The crowd looked a very respectable lot and Robert went out afterwards to sign autographs, we hung around a bit to people watch. Robert was great but he seems uncomfortable with people which was endearing. | ||

What day is it? Where am I? Seriously, I'm having an absolute blast on this trip. I'll never want to see a train for the rest of my life though! Lancaster tonight, and today is the first proper chance I've had to post, or check emails. Where to start? I'm probably going over areas already covered so forgive me. And I may also get a little mixed up about which night was which! Dublin - Friday Robert arrived on stage, early, unannounced, and in semi-darkness, and proceeded to tootle about with his guitar. It took a few seconds to register that the man we'd been waiting so long to see had made his appearance. A reverential ripple of applause. Most of the crowd shyly hanging back. It took us until half-way through the first song to inch our way forward to the front of the room. The air of reverence was palpable. From then on, we were under the spell, as Robert introduced first Adele, then Glenn and finally Matthew to the stage. True to his word, the break between sets could barely have been 10 minutes, and quite possibly the mere 8 which Robert had informed us it would be, at the start of the show. The result was, I missed half of the wonderful Too Much Of One Thing which started the second half of the show. Emotions were high all through the show for me. Joy, obviously, to see Robert & Co again. Sadness of course, at moments when Grant was either very very close or very very far away, depending on how you want to look at it. Quite a few tears were wiped away during a wonderful version of Quiet Heart. I didn't dare look about at the faces of those around me, instead not wanting to intrude on others' private reflections. Most of all though, the atmosphere was buzzing and happy. It was great to meet up with some of the gang from the board – Jonathon, David Fitz, and “Some American Guy”(!) Also met up with some other old acquaintances, who are also huge Go-Betweens fans. It's a shame I didn't locate some of the others – It would have been good to link up with some more of the crew... So be it. I'm delighted also, to say that my sister enjoyed the show immensely – Incidentally, the same sister who in 1989 when she wouldn't leave the bloody pub, caused me to miss all but half their last song, when they supported REM!!! She did hang back a bit for the first set though. I'm guessing she probably felt a little bit like an atheist at high mass! By the end of the night though, she was pretty much ready to be baptized!! She got chatting to another female semi-convert, and commented that the audience was about 95% male, to which the swift reply: “Don't knock it!!” Went for a few drinks in Doyle's with my sister, Jonathon, "Some American Guy" and a few others. Lots of fun, and lots more beer was had by all! Saturday began with a monumental hangover, after the excesses of the night before. I was never so glad for on-line check-in, which meant I got a precious extra half hour of sleep! Travelled with Jonathan and "Some American Guy" who were co-incidentally on the same flight. Plenty of time spent comparing hangovers and notes on the night before. The Glasgow show followed a different pattern to Dublin, with all four arriving on stage from the get-go. They started with a blistering version of Temptation Inside Your Heart, one of my favourite Velvet tracks. This time, the acoustic numbers were scattered throughout the set. If the atmosphere in Dublin had been electric (and it was!) Glasgow was positively nuclear! I suppose because of the old Postcard links, it could be considered a bit of a UK “hometown” show. The venue itself was really cool, part of an old church, converted into various bars and function rooms. Very groovy, with stone walls and floors. The height on stage was worryingly low – I was worried for Robert, should he decide to start pogo-ing! The crowd had about an 80/20 M/F split, and the majority of the female contingent seemed to be genuine fans, as opposed to wives or girlfriends dragged along. Although, I couldn't help groaning a “For f**k sake!” at the woman who shouted for Bachelor Kisses! I wasn't the only one to express a similar opinion. She probably didn't realise the gravity of making such a request. Forgive her Robert, she knew not what she said! The buzz of the night was (only temporarily) broken by the over-zealous bouncers chucking us all out at the end of the show, in order to get in the night-clubbing punters. We very briefly considered gate-crashing the wedding celebrations going on in one of the other parts of the venue, but instead opted for the far safer and FAR more enjoyable option (Sorry Darren & Lisa!) of the main bar. The band joined everybody there later, and were again gracious with their time and conversation. Had a very funny chat with Adele, about the fact that there are no tits (the birds...) in Australia! As for the walk back to the hotel afterwards.. I'm convinced that every female in Glasgow is due to either get married or attend their best friend's wedding within the next month, such was the amount of hen-parties in evidence! That's all I have time for today - need to get the glad-rags on for tonight's show! | ||

Lancaster last night, it was actually in the city library with bookshelves behind and to stage right ( biographies of Clapton, Strummer and Hendrix on display) , There were problems with the lights and at the start Robert said "the lights wont work " and eventually he had some ceiling lights on, which was actually very good. Small but dedicated crowd and alot of the same faces I recognised from Manchester. Very friendly people Martin standing next to me was a long term fan up from Chester and another lad in a Mclennan t shirt. Because it was smaller venue and tiny stage it was intimate but as glorious as Manchester. Some different songs tonight, high lights Danger in the Past ( acoustic), I'm Alright, Sweet Jane and a stunning version of 121 to close, no Rock and Roll Friend and no Quiet Heart but that didn't seem to matter, Adele and Glenn having a great time, Robert intense with a sly humour, Even picked up 79-90 vinyl edition on my way out. The gig was started off in the right way with Vampire Weekend playing before they came on and after they left. | ||

I know I've had the tape and then a double cd from japan and couldn't resist getting this it is my favourite GBs record. I was tempted not too having spent a bit of cash lately and trying to cut back but just knew I would regret it if i didn't. I also figured that Robert and the band could do with the money to cover some of their UK expenses! | ||
