Could n't resist it - going to drive up from London tonight after work. 200 standing venue should be a good contrast to the QEH. Any ideas what time RF will start - says 10pm curfew? I guess 8pm? Anyone up for a beer beforehand? Subject to traffic etc..... |

I'll be there (and at the QEH) - I'll be wearing a somewhat faded Go-Betweens Lee Remick t-shirt, long grey cord shorts, and carrying a small green Mambo bag (with camera in but no secret files). I'll look out for you, Spence - anybody with 2593 posts deserves respect! Aiming to get to Oxford around 6pm, traffic permitting. |

i've emailed the venue asking for stage times, will post here if i hear anything. am hoping they get the aircon working properly - went to see calexico a couple of weeks ago and half the gig was ridiculously hot until they found the switch for the aircon and the second half was very comfortable :-) mind you, that was in the bigger downstairs room at the academy so maybe that's all irrelevant. really looking forward to this tho |

Great night last night. First of all terrific to meet Spence, Catherine and Simon W. Really good company and great to find that people are as nice as they sound on the board. very small venue(200 cap) probably only 50-60 people there when they came on, filled up later on. Set list much as other nights, highlights for me -the shimmering guitar intro to Quiet Heart which brought tears to the eyes. -Hearing old GB favourites and feeling they are still very much alive 'She never had a nickname, but then nor had I'. I was kind of frightened of hearing the old stuff without Grant but with the new band it felt absolutely right. -I'm Alright - what a great song So much else, roll on Friday. |

Ditto to C Gull - great to meet you all. The band were on great form and it was Love is a Sign that brought tears to my eyes. And one of my all-time favourite lines is "She never had a nickname, but then nor had I". Genius. I'll post pics on flickr later (they won't be great – I'm s sub-editor not a photographer!) along with a pic of Adele's copy of the setlist, signed by Adele and Robert. Yep, 45 years old and still a fanboy at heart. And had a quick chat with Robert afterwards. Brilliant. See you guys Friday. I might go to Wagamama's beforehand, which is about 20 yards from the QEH, apparently. And one more thing I liked last night: the venue gave an accurate start time, and the band played around two hours or so, which I always reckon is about right. I've seen The Dandy Warhols and The Cure do three-hour sets but that's pushing it. |

I'll second that C Gull! T'was a joy to meet the two Simon's(and Simon W's wife) and Catherine (the most committed GB's/Bob fan I have ever met, go girl go!, I think I met jonathan and Austin too - Catherine???) Was a small gathering, which made it a perfect night. The band were flawless (apart from the usual Robert's starts a one string gitar solo, then decides he's had enough and goes Accapella!), Robert's peformance, it was a peformance, the guy should take the stage at the RSC, he was teriffic. Everyone played a blinder and the songs sounded the best you could ever hear them. From the oh so pretty Adele, who looked lovely with her semi acoustic bass (so suits her), to the wee lad on drums who looked like he was aged about 10!, and played so effortlessly, whoever found this lad deserves a medal, he so so suits the band, and Glenn, whose visual style (including the best hair sonce Bootsy Collins) really matched his playing ability and on-stage presence. As the board has said before, they all work well together, everyone knows its right. It was a GoBetweens gig for me, it didn't feel like a Robert Forster gig, i know Grant wasn't there, but he must've been smiling, as he probably has throughout this tour. I think its me that needs to get it together, in my excitement to rush and meet the board people at the brickworks, I forgot to pay my parking ticket and got fined a £100! And to add insult to injury I dropped my brand new Nikon SLR in the venue, after waiting patiently for 10 minutes with Catherine oustside to get a photo pass. Then on leaving the car park to go home I got shouted at by an irate taxi driver calling me a pri*k! Thank God the night was so great, or else i'd be on a MASSIVE downer today! |

Sorry to hear about the parking ticket - ouch! And second the comments on Catherine, that's what I call dedication. I considered doing what Catherine's doing, she's actually doing it. Good work. Certainly if I was rolling in money - or prepared to dip into my savings more (I'm a cheapskate) - I might have tried to make a couple of the dates in Europe. Performance wise, did anybody catch Robert in the early 90s. I can't remember the year, but he played the Orange in Kensington (I saw Grant there too, I think. Is the venue still open?) and the band now remind of the band he was touring with then, who I think comprised several members of the Bad Seeds and a German guitarist (I could be massively wrong on both counts, but hey, we're talking 15 years ago... |

I love it when the day after a gig little bits keep coming back to you - several from last night have sent a shiver down the spine this morning. As Simon W says Love Is A Sign was breathtaking - I remember a GB gig a few years ago when Robert opened with this (solo?). Also Heart Out to Tender with Robert in full performing mode and finally a superb Darlinghurst Years - the way this built up to a crecendo. |

Simon - funny that gig cat the Orange came back to me last night aswell. I remember really enjoying it but not much else - was this one of Robert's first solo tours. It was the opening day of the football season (blackburn home lost), a hot sunny day. I go past the Orange sometimes but I don't think it is still a venue. I seem to remember the german guitarist at Camden town (the underworld?)a couple of years later with Robert hamming it up massively to Outside the Circle?! |

Where did that song "Temptation " come from ? good to be back in contact |

I don't think they played "I Can Do." The notes I jotted down don't show that it was played. Who can confirm? |

Great Robert quotes from the night: When band got on stage: "We are the best looking group ever to play Oxford." After a few songs: "Please don't take offense to what I said earlier. We are the best looking group to play Oxford apart from Pink Floyd, 1966." |

"Temptation" is "Temptation Inside Your Heart" by The Velvet Underground, surely? They did it in New York earlier this month. I'm trying to imagine it being the New Order song... |

Mick, good to have you on board (I'm a regular attender here but don't post with the regularity of Spence and Pádraig - both over 2000 posts - or Randy at 1700). It's a very friendly board indeed. Pop on over to off-topic sometime, it's helped me find new bands to listen to (like House of Love - maybe not a "new" band, but one I missed when they were going). I too thought it was a classic gig, and both Adele and Robert seemed very pleased with how it went. Great sound, appreciative audience. With such a small venue you'd imagine there might be the temptation to go through the motions, but I think they were on top form. And I'm certainly looking forward to Friday at the QEH. And I always wonder whether Robert might have made it as an actor, as live he's as much a "performer" as he is singer. Matt, I'm not sure about whether they played I Can Do, I'm afraid. I think so, but wouldn't bet on it. And having a quick chat with Robert afterwards I complimented them not just on being the best looking band but having the best haircuts too (though that's partly jealousy on my part - 45 and with thinning, greying hair...), and old enough to be the drummer's dad. |

I don't remember I Can Do - they were getting pretty near the 10pm curfew so may have cut it. Did you catch Robert of R6 last night? I heard Surfing Mags and Demon Days. I think he said Demon Days was a Grant song, Mick - I think that was the only other GM song then. |

It was great to meet everyone in Oxford - You're all far more handsome and fab than my imagination had you! BTW Spence, that wasn't Austin, that was "Some American Guy"!! |
