Ok, I unwittingly killed the last thread. Sorry. And the kind comments of everyone are much appreciated. At the moment I am listening to: Kiki Dee--Loving and Free. This is her first album (1973) with Elton John's Rocket Records and is easily her best including four songs of her own. There are a few of those inevitable tedious 1970s boogie rock numbers and the Egan/Rafferty song "You Put Something Better Inside Me" is embarrasing when done by a woman, but the title song is timeless, as is "Amoureuse." She also does an excellent job with John/Taupin's "Lonnie & Josie" and her other three originals are all worthwhile. Jackson Browne's "Song for Adam" gets a nice treatment. There's a surprise bonus on the 2008 CD reissue in a cover of truckin' country classic "Six Days on the Road" which, unfortunately, suffers from the bad 1970s boogie rock approach. Still, it's her best album and the good definitely outweighs the bad and those with a greater tolerance for 70s-style rock will give it even higher marks than I do. |

Via Mr. Christgau: K'naan - "The Dusty Foot Philosopher." One of the best hip hop records I've heard in some time. Christgau's review says it best: http://music.msn.com/music/consumerguide / I played it last night - twice - while getting ready for a dinner party, and as a big fan of both African music and hip hop, I can testify that this guy does both (seemingly not incompatible) genres proud. |

The nearly as sublime Crooked Mile by Microdisney. Jeff, Randy, where do you fall on the 39 Minutes / Crooked Mile debate. (Not sure if there ever has been such a debate, but let's make it one if there hasn't). |

I can't weigh into that Padraig because I don't have "Crooked Mile." I've been stubbornly refusing to buy a vinyl copy and CDs have only gotten more expensive. All of the original Microdisney albums on CD are very difficult to get. People don't let them go. I got "39 Minutes" through sheer beginner's luck. I will say this though: I have a definite preference for their earlier half when the arrangements were more angular. |

The Script - We Cry single. I bought it without having heard it but having read some great reviews and because they're Irish (you don't see a lot of singles by new Irish bands in Australia). I played it for the first time on the kitchen boom box this morning. My 6-year-old said "They don't sound very Irish". She's right. They sound American. But they sound great. It's white soul in the New Radicals vein, but with more of a hip-hop influence. The two b-sides, Fall For Anything and Live Like We're Dying are actually far better tracks. Not sure anyone else here would like it though! |

My Bloody Valentine - Soon (Andrew Weatherall mix). Oh how I love this version. A rare thing to take on a perfect (avant) pop song and do it justice in a remix. |

Padraig - I agree with Randy, the earlier pre-Virgin Microdisney releases are better - more inventive sense of melody, a bit more angular, more unique, etc... while the Virgin albums are more polished and a bit more trad sounding. That said, I still think both 39 MInutes and Crooked Mile are excellent albums. They can at times be annoyingly slick, and 39 Minutes in particular has to put up a pretty intense fight against the production gloss. But I actually think the songs hold up, and both albums contain some of Coughlan's most hilarious and scathing lyrics. |

Robbie Hitchcock - Fegmania! I'd forgotten what a wonderful album it is. It seems the perfect balance between earlier, more obscure Hitch and the latter, more mainstream stuff. The songs rock, are masterfully arranged and just catchy as hell. |

I am listening to The Bell Divers - June July. Kiki Dee sounds interesting Randy! Pad, re Microdisney, I tend to fall in line with what Jeff says. As with most things, there are different reasons for loving their early and later stuff. Their early stuff, I loved for its honest songwriting, the claustrophobia you got from listening to the music, and to be honest, the overall originality aspect. Birthday Girl was the first thing I ever heard by them, I think it was on the UK TV programme the Tube in '85 or something, I suppose the factthat this was the firsttime I saw them as well was a double whammy. Visually they looked like I dunno, Magazine, yet they oozed a sincere pop sensibiity, and the lyrics and the front man, well... Later on, as I was becoming more and more of a fan, yes I saw the glossiness appear, but it didn't put me off them. I think the songs were there, if thesongs weren't there then I'd probably of gone off them. Crooked Mile I thinks is teriffic, againgreat words, great music, Sean's arrangements are flawless. 39 Minutes, I was working at Virgin Records. Virgin was being taken over by WH Smiths well, Our Price. Anyway I ended up helping the builders demolish and refit the old shop into the new, and during this phase I was out and about a lot in the removekl vans etc. The rep who dealyt with Micordisney and Virgin left me a 39 Mins tape, I stuck it in the van's tape player and this became the soundtracjk to amonth of my life in early '88. I just loved it because you could sing along to these raging lyrics that would scare your Granny: ("United colours, powder pink, colours of brain rot, shot to hell") at the top of your lungs, whilst the music plodded along in a glossed up Steely Dan stylee. So I suppose for that reason alone, I love 39 Minutes! |

It's a goodun, for sure. It sounds like Hitchcock momentarily put all of the whimsy aside and just wrote songs, songs with hooks that stick... Listened to big chunks of the Kinks Kronikles last night. The absolute best stuff from the best band ever. |

ETW and Randy, Fegmania! was my intro to Robyn Hitchcock when I bought a vinyl copy of it back in 1985 after reading a couple of reviews in Musician and Rolling Stone. Needless to say I was hooked right away. Yep Roc just last week released remastered editions of the Robyn Hitchcock and The Egytptian albums Fegmania!, the live Gotta Let This Hen Out! and Element of Light. You can get them individually, or like I did buy them in a 5 disc set titled Luminous Groove. |

I found the Luminous Groove set for $25 at a used shop, so I couldn't resist, despite already having most of its contents in their original formats. Great stuff. The version of "Bells of Rhymney" in the bonus materials is quite wonderful and sublime, too. |

Randy, if you like Hitchcock's other stuff, I would definitely recommend Fegmania. It really is one of his best. And it does sound like an album where Hitchcock hunkered down and just wrote a genuinely solid batch of tunes. Lots of nice, understated, melodic pop. My other Hitchcock favs are Black Snake Diamond Role, Element of Light, and Groovy Decoy. |

Randy, Solid RH choices from Jeff that are also my favorites of his, with the exception of Groovy Decoy due to the "Ghastly mellow saxophones" in the mixes of some of the songs. The live Gotta Let This Hen Out! has better versions of some of the Groovy Decoy songs. I would subsititute I Often Dream Of Trains for Groovy Decoy. Also Robyn's first band's second studio album, The Soft Boys - Underwater Moonlight is total gem. The 1980 version of the SB's that created UM included future Egyptian drummer Morris Windsor, Kimberly Rew who wrote Walking On Sunshine and Going Down To Liverpool in later years as the lead guitar player for Katrina and The Waves, and future Thomas Dolby and Thompson Twins bass player Matthew Seilgeman. |

Michael, massive Hitchcockian (I'm avoiding the term "Hitchcockhead") that you are, do you follow Kimberly Rew's solo career? Some of it's really good. I got to give big points to anybody who'd write a song called about Phillip Larkin. |

I've got Crooked Mile on vinyl. I picked it up in a bargain bin for the equivalent of about $1.50 in Andorra (of all places!) in 1988. (Yours for $1000 Randy, Jeff or Spence. Plus post and packing). |

Dang. I was thinking the above was serious so I checked eBay, because, hell, I'd sell mine for a pittance, a mere fraction of that amount. Alas, you can get a sealed copy for $4.95. Btw, what's the deal with "Bubonique"? 'Zat a Microdiz side project? There are copies for sale.. |

Bubonique was more a Fatima Mansions project - Fatima Mansions being singer Cathal Coughlan's post-Microdisney band. That's the one segment of Cathal's career that I've yet to hear. I read somewhere that it's incredibly silly. Yeah, Crooked Mile is a snap to find cheaply on vinyl - it's made regular appearances in dollar bins over the yearsl. It's the CD that's so elusive. And 39 Minutes is impossible to find on any format. |

There was supposed to be a Bubonique follow up called Trance Arse 4. I don't know if it ever happened. Cathal's partner in crime with Bubonique was Irish comedian Sean Hughes. I think I heard one song and it was awful. Though maybe I just imagined it. I'm sure it was awful though. |

I truly recommend them to you, sir. The guy has a knack for those indelible, jangly pop melodies and has a flair for offbeat and witty lyrics, though perhaps not as lysergically flavored as his pal Robyn's. I've been listening to the new Alejandro Escovedo, "Real Animal" which is superb, and the last one by Simone Dinnerstein, where she takes on the Goldberg Variations (I'm always reminded of Woody Allen's joke about how that sounds like an old married, Jewish couple trying out new positions in the marital bed). Beautiful performance - every now and then you just gotta rock the classical stuff. |

ETW, I got to see Kimberly live on stage with Robyn three times, and they play the dual lead guitar thing like you wouldn't believe. Robyn on a Telecaster and Kimberely on a Stratocaster. When Kimberly is really hitting the note, he looks like a muppett as he is short of stature and his bowl haircut always seems to be in motion. Even though Robyn has close to three dozen albums released, I bet Kimberly had gotten more royalty checks over the years from "Walking On Sunshine". |

i've been giving the radio dept. another go.....but really, it leaves me rather cold for the most part. great influences and the like, but all a bit dull. listening to calenture around the clock, for weeks on end. just perfect. the only other thing on regular rotation is the mat's let it be....nice reissue earlier on this year. that record really sounds like nothing else. |

I know I've said it around these part before, Joe, but if I had to forfeit all my CDs but one, "Let It Be" would certainly be in the running. I haven't picked up the reissue - I should, of course - but my old copy (which has "Androgynous" misspelled on the back cover) is well worn. My weekend playlist: Archers of Loaf - "White Trash Heroes" Tom Verlaine - "Cover" Lucinda Williams - "West" Ornette Coleman - Everything I own Ornette's headlining the Chicago jazz fest tonight. I'm so excited I could bust. I never thought I'd have a chance to see the guy. I missed Sonny Rollins the other night because he played during Obama's speech, so I'm definitely braving the crowds tonight. |

Padraig I liked your reviews from Roberts Sydney gigs, It reminds me why I'm a Doctor and not a writer. Finally got the new Paul Weller and really like it, it is so varied yet cohesive ( which is what usually attracts me to an LP) My only problem with PW is the self publicity so getting it a month or two after the release meant I could listen to it with out all that crowding in. Also been playing my vinyl copies of Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver. |

The Evangelist - Robert Forster. Playing it right now. Also listened to it last night. I told my daughter I'd turn it off as it was bedtime, but she said we could listen to it in her room as I put her to bed. So we did. She asked me what evangelist meant, so I told her what the word meant and what the song meant. She also asked me if some of the songs on the album were a bit sad. I told her they are. I'm glad my love of music, and specifically The Go-Betweens, has been passed on. I've said it before though, and I'll say it again; if your kids listen to crap like Britney Spears, IT'S YOUR FAULT! |

Got to hand it to Madonna, a solid 25 year track record with numerous hit singles and albums. I can't say anything postive about her movies though. Speaking of Madonna and the movies, I bet there are a number of movies in which the characters discuss Madonna. I can think of two, the opening scene at the diner in Reservoir Dogs. The other being Richard Linklater's first film Slacker with the woman trying to raise cash by selling a Madonna pap smear, played by Butthole Surfers drummer Teresa Taylor. Poi Dog Pondering's lead singer is also in the movie in another funny scene. |

It's always wonderful when one can pass along a favorite of one's own to their child...in my case my keed went for things like Harry Nilsson, TMBG (even before they started specifically making children's records), the books of Beverly Cleary, etc.). However concurrently with that (especially when their peers start having more influence) they gravitate towards their own choices as well, and unless the lyrics are grossly inappropriate (which can certainly be more of a problem these days) I don't think it's something to get too worked up about...and of course strong reaction by the parent often breeds even more rebellion. My boy was 9 when Backstreet Boys and N'Sync appeared, and so I got quite the earful of them, and came to enjoy the best of it, like I would any other prime, hook-laden bubblegum pop. And when he passed into his next musical phase I inherited the CDs. |

Gotta rave about the new one by Bri Wilson, "That Lucky Old Sun". Just beautiful. You could get lost in some protracted, trainspotter debate about whether it's as good as "Smile", as serious a work, etc., but feck that - just enjoy! It's a serious shot of life-affirming, sunny California energy, like spending a day on a not-too-crowded Ca. beach with surfers and blonde, wholesome girls wearing not-so-wholesome bikinis. You have a place in the shade and have managed to smuggle in a beer, and...sorry, got lost in my reverie there. If you liked albums like "16 Big Ones" and "Beach Boys Love You", you'll love this, cuz it's more or less in that vein. 'Course, the singin is much better, since none of the other Beach Boys are on it! Magical, spiritually resonant stuff. |

michael, i was actually watching some golden girls reruns last night and even back in 1987 bea arthur (bless!)'s character made some hell freezes over reference in the form of "when madonna has a hit movie!". the only other one that springs to mind at eight in the morning is a jibe uttered in romy and michelle's high school reunion, far from essential....but still makes me chuckle. that and i've always been a little besotted with mira sorvino. |

Its when your child, in my case son, goes thru the Metallica and Rage Against Machine phase that you wonder what went wrong. Although I got to hear a lot of good stuff from both bands, it was just overload on them and I feared a sunny pop song would ever emerge from his CD player ever again. |

David, if it's any consolation, I was a total metalhead from age 9-12 (this was around 84-87), massively obsessed with Metallica, Slayer, Motorhead, Sabbath, etc... And there's been no shortage of sunny pop coming from my stereo since. |

I was also a total metalhead David. It's the ones who still obsess about that stuff in their 20s you've got to worry about. Soon they're burning down churches and whatnot. |

"Raising McCain" - Rich of Big N'Rich's oh-so-clever campaign song for the titular candidate. It is ear-bleedingly, nauseatingly awful. I'd rather pierce my eardrums with popsicle sticks than ever hear it again. |

Ximena Serinana - Mediocre. Great new Mexican songstress. Since my Spanish is a little, er, rudimentary, I'm not really sure what she's singing about in a lot of the songs. She may be singing, "kill all the gabachos", for all I know, but it sure sounds beautiful! |

Lindsey Buckingham - "Gift of Screws." I haven't heard boo about this one, but I think it's one his better solo records. Great pop tunes, and less acoustic than the last one, which felt tentative to me. The song "Love Runs Deeper" is like a great, lost Fleetwood Mac number. I know there a couple Mac fans around here: I recommend this one. |

Once again: The Buckingham record. Played it maybe three times yesterday, and it has a distinct "Tusk" quality to it. Sure, you miss Stevie and Christine, but it's Lindsey's show. This one is really growing on me. If you get it, throw open the windows and play "Love Runs Deeper" and "Wait for You" really, really loud. My neighbors probably love me. |

loving the lindsey buck record too rob! tusk is by far and away my favourite mac album and i completely agree with you on the sound and feel here. speaking of 1983, i'm listening to the new cyndi lauper album. it probably wont appeal to anyone round these parts, but i think it's great. the only consistent (and brilliant) record she ever came up with was her first.... but i'd say this is the closest she's managed since. |

Still really diggin' the new Calexico record - a pretty stellar return to form after the relative misfire of their last, more straightforwardly poppy one. But, this time, they really mean it, man. They've got the whole deal, the full monty, whatever, going - the mariachis, the steel guitars, a great Latino singer, the desert and the mystery are all back and beautifully blended into that great atmospheric sound. |

Re: Dylan rarities: the cut I heard from the new collection, "Dreaming of You", I think it was called, was outstanding. Fascinating because it contained lyrics that later came to be included in "Standing in the Doorway". I'm always intrigued by things like that, that show insight into the songwriting process. But that said, it really stood up as a great song, in its own right. I don't know if, otherwise, he's scraping the bottom of the barrel with this new one, but I will be having it, nonetheless. |

hehe.....i've been a shattered man all day as a result! weirder still, FDD didn't quite rip right onto my ipod, so it's kind of mangled in parts - making it sound all the more unnerving. it probably goes without saying, but BH makes for great late night listening too. the kind of saturday nights when you know you should be out with actual people, but aren't....electing (having no option but) to lie in bed alone, staring at the ceiling instead. only speaking for myself here, of course! |

Jeff, ah the Chills - probably the only band other than The Go-Betweens that I have every official recording of (even the only 2,000 made Secret Box which just happened to be on sale in a Christchurch, NZ, record shop when I was there a few years ago). I probably listen to Submarine Bells most (how come that wasn't a massive hit?), while Kaleidoscope World and Brave Words both have cracking songs on them, though there's some pretty dodgy sound quality at times. It's just a shame that Martin Phillipps has had health and personal issues over much of the last decade, though The Chills are at least playing again in New Zealand. And Head on the Door - another great choice. I'm still going through a big Laura Veirs phase - who I've probably been listening to more than anyone this year. |

Jerry, I doubt it's scraping the barrel yet for Dylan. The tracks that were released before are still very rare. I don't have them anyway. I'll be getting it, though not the $140 three disc version. Simon, I reviewed Secret Box in The Irish Times. The only time I had to pay for a record I reviewed! (I wanted to pay as I figured Martin Phillips needed the money). I emailed the review to their website and it's up there somewhere. Right now I'm listening to The Magical World Of The Strands by Michael Head & The Strands. It's Harvest Time (the track that's on now) is such an incredible song. |

Caught Up Still Caught Up Live and Uncensored Three by Millie Jackson, one of the quasi-forgotten women of soul. Funnier than hell, and boy can she belt... |

Monkees--Headquarters. The one with their own clunky musicianship. My favorite. |

From the bowels of my record collection, Spence. That Dalis Car record has been close to my heart ever since I first bought it when I was about 14 years old, for better or worse! It sounds so much like Peter Murphy fronting Japan; the kind of thing that probably sounds absolutely atrocious to anyone but me! |

I've got Dalis Car too Jeff though I haven't played it for ages since it's on vinyl and I don't have a record player anymore. I always liked the backwards fretless bass on it - quite amazing. I was disappointed by Raintree Crow but I have been listening to the exquisite Secrets of the Beehive lately. I'm building up to see if I can listen to Blemish in one sitting once more! In the meantime - The Moffs Collection (and some early companion piece Floyd) has been stuck in my cd players over the last couple of weeks. |

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Cosmo's Factory. I picked up one of the reissues, basically because it was cheap ($8) and Good Lord, what a tremendous album. Not sure I'd ever heard it before in its entirety, though I'm well familiar with all the hits. They've done a beautiful job of remastering it, too. |

I'm off to the forsaken center of California's Big Valley again. For this occasion I've put together one well-filled CD of my favorite McCarthy songs. As the current economic situation unfolds, McCarthy's lyrics seem more and more appropriate. I will also be bringing Bettye LaVette, Modern Giant, Chills, Triffids, Cannanes, Subway Sect, Biff Bang Pow, Microdisney, P.F. Sloan, Nick Drake and Blue Aeroplanes. These lengthy trips are great opportunities to listen to albums with the minimum of distraction. And the sound is nearly always great in these rent cars. |

i love hats, frank. sure it has a slight AOR/simply red feel to it, but it's just such a sensual feast...who are us mere mortals to deny it?!? i read somewhere once that record feels more like being in love than love itself (i'm sure it was articulated better than that) and played at just the right moment, i'd say that call is spot on. on a similar note, today on a sunny train ride i listened to EBTG's "amplified heart". i never ever understood the appeal of missing....it still irks me a little now...but the rest of the album is one of the most deliciously lovelorn laments i've ever been privy to. |
