I love it when two of my favorite bands engage in a love-fest. Here's a nice piece by Carrie Brownstein, formerly of Sleater-Kinney, on her adoration of the Go-Betweens:

I'm not much of an SK fan, but I do love it when a musician whose music has nothing in common stylistically with another band, publicly gushes over that band (as opposed to gushing over some other band that sounds more like they do). And this is a well-written and well-worded piece.

It's actually a great piece, agreed, even though I, like you, never really got SK.

What pisses me off is someone in the comments (why do I bother reading them?) criticizes Robert's lyrics for being, basically, too abstract. Apparently, unless it's literal minded moon-sppon bs, they're too tough for him to wrap his mind around. What a douche!

I actually just replied to that post suggesting that you have to be fairly dim not to get most of them - or at least have your imagination switched off.

Let me save Kevin the trouble of coming out of hiding to reply to this thread:

Really? Sucks? Doc, I thought you were a fan. I feel so... alone.

Whatever.

Personally, I wouldn't go that far. They're just not really my thing. In fact, they're not so bad when Carrie sings. But with Corin's tuneless wail, I can't really handle 'em. And the fact that their band photos often resemble Gap ads is kind of funny.

I don't really believe what I wrote. I love Sleater-Kinney almost as much as I love Hall and Oates. But I know how everyone's missing Kevin...

I knew it, Doc. I couldn't believe a Le Tigre fan didn't dig SK (not Kilbey!). It was a good Kev impression, however. Makes me want to play some Springsteen...

No kidding, Jeff...let's make sure he's really gone and throw out some chum to see if the shark comes back:

Beatles! Springsteen! Blue Sky Blue! Sting! Steely Dan! Dad rock, er...rocks! 16LL is a great album! 80s music is the best!

...and you sussed it, Rob. S-K was my favorite band when they were around, and to be honest, part of why I got into the Go-Betweens as a latecomer. S-K haters might want to check out "Quarter to Three" on The Hot Rock album, musically it could almost be an outtake from Liberty Belle. And the vocals are a little less helium-filled than usual.

Didn't I have a difference of opinion with someone here years ago about SK (I don't like them by the way!)? Was it you Rob?

I can't imagine it was me, Padraig, although SK is one of my very favorite bands of the last 15 years. Generally, I don't argue matters of taste so I can't imagine I'd take much of a stand on the subject. Now politics is another matter...

There don't seem to be too many other SK fans on this board, though. Wonder who it was?

Since somebody mentioned Steely Dan, a friend at work well familiar with my great--ahem!--love for Steely Dan gave me a copy of the new Onion which has an article entitled "Donald Fagen Defends Steely Dan to Friends." It's one of the Onion articles that's actually funny.

What's the link to that Randy? I have to say I find The Onion very funny most of the time.

My friend gave me the hard copy of the paper Padraig. But here's the link:

http://www.theonion.com/content/news/don ald_fagen_defends_steely_dan_to

You might need to do something about those spaces. It's in the newest issue so you can get it at www.onion.com

That is very funny. Thanks Randy. I look at The Onion almost every week but somehow missed that one. I met a lot of their writers when they were based in Madison, WI. I wrote about them a couple of times for The Irish Times. Both of those stories are online at www.myspace.com/padraigcollins if anyone is interested.
