I think I put on the previous thread a few gigs I've got lined up, but (and taking into consideration my bobbins memory) here's a full list. Jim Noir (Manchester Roadhouse) Isobel Campbell/Mark Lanegan (Manchester Academy) Iron & Wine (Manchester Ritz) The Bangles [Don't ask] (Liverpool Academy) The Police (Manchester MEN Arena) Darren Hayman [From Hefner](Manchester Somewhere) Not sure if that's it, but there's a couple more in the pipeline. Cheers Jon |

Jon, I saw the Police in Sydney late January. They were good, but even my expensive seats were too far back. I hope you have got fantastic (ie very expensive) seats and they haven't been snaffled up by celebrities (Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban, etc). |

Geoff Don't think we've got the best seats, but I've got it in my mind that its not going to be too good (as I don't like Arena's). So I don't have a problem, and really the police helped define my music as a young 'un so its worth it. If its celebs it would probably be full of Manc footballers, being a Liverpool fan will add to the disappointment. Cheers Jon |

For anyone who lives in Scotland, Catch Dave Graney, Malcolm Ross and his country group Buckley's Chance, plus other new great bands at Voodoo Rooms, Edinburgh 8th May. Anyone who lives in Birmingham, Friday May 30th at the Hare and hounds, Kings Heath, will see yours truly supporting the great Vic Godard and The Subway Sect. I'm playing drums for my other band The Leaking Machine. |

Saw Sharon Jones in the Button Factory, Dublin, two weeks ago. Oh my dear good god, she's even better live than on CD! I have LK to thank, wherever he's got to, for getting me into this amazing woman. If the opportunity arises, go and see her.. Hoping to get along to Holdsteady in May, if there are any tickets left. Only found out about it today. And Spiritualized! Where are they playing, XY?? I hadn't heard about that one at all. Clearly, I have been living under a rock for the past few months to miss that one... |

Hi Catherine, Spiritualized are playing Tripod (Old Harcourt St Station) on Wed May 28th, tickets are great value at about €22. They'll be touring their latest album 'Songs in A&E' which is to be released on May 26th although Kevin seems to have got his hands on a copy pre-release as ususal! On that subject Kevin what's it like? |

XY, hope you enjoy old Spiritualized, I must say I wasn't impressed by his performance last year supporting massive, though, he's had a real rough time of it lately and may have still been convalescing. Catherine, of course, i'll cross the rough sea just for you! As long as i can pop to see my Aunty lena in Mayo! |

Went to see Jim Noir last Friday at the Roadhouse in Manchester. Support was rubbish, can't remember who it was, but the only reason to remember them is to use them as an example of bad support bands. Jim Noir played most of his new (second) album and a few singles off the 1st. The band aren't the same (most of them are the beep seals if you myspace that sort of thing) and aren't a patch on the old band. Having said that it was a decent night out, and the new stuff is taking shape, in my mind, after a little while of wondering if I liked it. About £7 so no complaints. Colin MacIntyre (From Mull Historical Society)next week at the Night & Day in Manchester. Cheers Jon |

Went to see Colin MacIntyre a coulple of nights back. Played quite a bit off the 1st couple of Mull Historical Society albums, and then a fair bit off his new album. The new stuff seemed very similar to the old stuff, don't think there's been much progression in his writing skills. Then again £10, 3 bands and he played for about an hour and a quarter.....oh and Widnes won the rugby league the same night...happy days! Cheers Jon |

It's May and the sleepy French countryside awakes. The duo "Asrafil" tonight at the Châteaux des Milandes, Dordogne (Josephine Baker's old pad!). Comprising two master musicians Yonatan Avishaï on piano and Bachir Mouhali on percussion, who play their own exhilirating form of jazz/world music. Not to be missed if you are in the area! Off to see Yonatan again next week in the Bordeaux jazz festival, where he is playing with the trumpeter Rasul Siddik (last seen in these parts playing with the sax man David Murray and the amazing percussionists from Guadeloupe, the Gwo-Ka Masters). http://www.bordeauxjazzfestival.com/prog ramme.php End of the month in our village, the return of the guitarist Sébastien Martel. He played a wonderful gig last year for us. A sideman of some reknown (Camille, -M-, Keren Ann), he also has a solo career and is playing this gig with two other musicians as 'Las Ondas Marteles'. There is a whole story to the formation of the trio, which is quite interesting - http://www.label-bleu.com/artist.php?art ist_id=122&lng=e I have started a web-site for the cultural association that I am part of, so check out our program if you happen to be down our way in SW France. Clicking on a photo should launch a bigger image. http://pagesperso-orange.fr/Vidoni-Kerr/ eda.htm Now just need to get Robert Forster to agree to play in the autumn! |

Penn & Teller, @ the Rio. Incredily mind bottling, as Will Ferrell might say. The high point of the whole danged incredibly cool show was when they shot each other with laser-sighted .357 Magnums and caught the bullets with their teeth! Entertainment don't get no better, folks! |

Don't get to see many gigs where I live so it was nice to round off a trip to Germany with a rip-roaring Van Morrison show in Berlin - looking a bit like a tubby Eric Morcambe and refusing to remove hat and jacket despite the heatwave, when he opened his mouth that old lion voice just tore the place apart - tremendous sax playing too, hot band, and a musician new to me called Sarah Jory on pedal steel, banjo and general crowd entertaining. Highlight, a storming version of Star of the County Down. |

Went to see Iron & Wine last night at the Ritz in Manchester. I really don't know what to say about this gig (English never a strong point at school). It was quite interesting, early on with just an acoustic guitar and backing vocals - reminded me a little of Mark Kozelek. Then after a couple of songs the rest of the band arrived playing everything from glockenspiel to slide guitars, to Hammond organs, to an accordion (maybe a bit of Sufjan Stevens). Very eclectic and very entertaining, but rather than me waffling on have a listen on the internet and see what you think. Next week, my second Jens Lekman gig of the year in Manchester - which might be Glasgow Rangers fans free by then!!! Cheers Jon |

PJ Harvey 19.05.08, Berlin, Friedrichstadtpalast a thin, little lady in a beautiful dress on a huge stage fend for herself played beqautiful stripped down versions of her songs. electric guitar, piano, autoharp, electronics. and it was drop-dead gorgeous. never heard their songs in a better way. should by issued on dvd( just to have a look on that really dazzling dress), cd and vinyl. 1 hour and fifteen minutes of magic (half of the time of the MP gig, but three times expensiver!). |

I was supposed to see Two Gallants tonight in Galway, but work got in the way. The show would have been half over by the time I got there. I saw them play support to Ben Weaver, about 2 years ago - really sparse stuff, but wonderful. The new CD is a bit more slick - scratch that - The new CD is a little less harrowing. Would have liked to hear how it sounds live. Anyone out there seen them recently? Highlight to come though, is Bruce Springsteen on Sunday. I'm looking forward to it, although I plan to be at the bar when he plays Born In The USA. Not that I don't want to hear it, it's just that I don't want to witness 10,000 people all bawling along, claiming alternative citizenship!!! |

I've seen RT maybe a dozen times, Svein, and I don't think he's ever been less than stellar. The guy's just a natural performer, and thanks to the superhero-esque guitar work, he's one of the few singer-songwriters who's at least as good solo as he is with a full band. |

One of my favourite concerts ever, RT solo in Edinburgh some years back: but the best moment was when some youthful American voice called out: "You're great...have you ever recorded anything?" A brief pause, then massive hilarity. |

Hi Charles Coy. I only have the latest album simply called Two Gallants. I can recommend that one. Kinda covers old ground ie country, blues, folk butfor two guys they make it rock. Catherine, the gig in Waterford was great. Problem is the venue is rubbish. But they made the most of it and gave a good show. |

Rob/Stuart, he was very funny and had a really good rapport with the audience. He took almost every song request shouted at him in his stride, and always kept the banter between songs brief enough. Of some twenty great songs there's hard to pick a favorite, but "Beeswing" just edges it on this occation. I hope I get the chance to see him again. |

Frank, you're probably already on the way to Bruce, but trust me, it'll be worth the rain! I was at the third Dublin gig on Sunday night, and it was terriffic. He's in top form, and for an almost 60 year old, he can certainly move! Set wise, they played a lot from Magic, with a good mix from everything else. It seemed to me that he played a fair amount from Born in the USA (except for the obvious!) And even though it started to rain close to the end of the show, it didn't spoil the night at all. Any scepticism I had about Da Bawss is completely wiped out. I'm a complete convert at this stage! |

As one of the board's Bruce partisans, Catherine, I'm really happy you had a good time - and jealous, too, of course. It's almost a cliche to say so, but I don't think anyone puts on a better show, arena-sized or otherwise. The fact that he can do it on an arena-type scale, though, is even more impressive. In honor of your conversion, I think I'll play me a little "Magic" tonight. |

Saw Spiritualized last night in Tripod, Dublin. Just received Songs from A+E yesterday so thought I wouldn't know much stuff at it but he only played about 5 of these new songs, the rest that I can remember were: Shine A Light & Take Your Time from Laser Guided Melodies, Let It Flow from Pure Phase, Come Together and Think I'm In Love from Ladies & Gentelmen.... Lord Let It Rain On Me and a few other rockers from Amazing Grace and Walkin with Jesus, Take Me to The Other Side & Lord Can You Hear Me from his Spacemen 3 catalogue. 2 guitars, bass, drums, keybords and two backing singers. Good sound when I could here it over the din of all the people talking right thru the gig at the bar. I don't mind some talking and chat at gigs but there were groups of people chatting right through it, oblivious to the music. You'd wonder why they came at all. Good value at €22. |

Me gain! Well The vic Godard gig was a real treat. The LEaking Machine went down fairly well, the PA was a bit crap. Vic was a really nice chap, whose sound hasn't changed in 30 years! I'd heard that in the mid 80's when he'd given up on music for a while he'd become a postman. And when he arrived in the room for soudcheck, there he was with a Royal Mail issue polyester dshirt! After the gig, he got inhis car with the bassist and gutarist and headed off home, ready to start a shift as a Postman!! It was a great night for me as I bumped into loads of old musical friends I hadn't seen in ages, memebrs of bands The Nightingales, The Prefects, funnily nuff The Prefects would have played with Vic when he did the Clash's White Riot tour, Also, some friends Gary (Vic's drummer) and Marco Thomas from the group Felt, I hadn't seen in years. All in all, it was a fab night, I was very, very drunk. |

Going to Leonard Cohen on Saturday night, and I can't wait! After all those tribute shows, etc, I'll finally see Lenny sing Lenny... My workmates are getting rather confused. I'm going about with a big grin of anticipation, but they just don't understand it when I tell them it's because I'm looking forward to a Leonard Cohen gig. More than one has predicted that I'll be in a fit of Depression on Monday morning! By the way, I've ended up with a spare ticket, if anyone Ireland based is interested?? |

Hi Catherine, I'm going on Saturday night too, luckily I live about 15 minutes walk from Kilmainham so I'll be able to listen to some of his music while having a bottle of vino in the back garden before hand. Let's hope it doesn't rain!! I'll ask any friends about the ticket but most of them are going one of the weekend mights. |

I went to a couple of gigs last week. 1st up was Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan at the Academy 2 in Manchester. I great live translation of the two albums, not much talk between songs. A good night out. The next night was the Ruby Lounge in Manchester were Darren Heyman was playing. A short(ish) set of semi-acoustic Hefner songs. A good time during the gig was turned into an excellent time with an 80s - 90s indie disco after....some long lost songs getting an airing. Tomorrow is The Police at the MEN in Manchester, not a great fan of arenas to be honest, but Sting decided not to play my back garden so it has to be. Just noticed the Wedding present have announced a tour for december including a date in Manchester so that looks another on the cards. Cheers Jon |

I'm off to see Crowded House on Saturday at the Westonbirt Arboretum. Haven't seen them in years, but they used to be a cracking live band - I hope they still are. First time I saw them was at the Bristol Bierkeller. They turned up very later after performing for Top of the Pops - and during the 120-mile drive from London to Bristol they lost Tim Finn after a bust-up with his brother. The result was an extremely charge atmosphere and a brilliant performance. |

XY and anyone else interested. My Bloody Valentine last night - absolutely astonishing. Probably my most eagerly awaited 'comeback gig' along with the Pixies a couple of years ago. Breath taking renditions of virtually both albums, not a word said to the audience who just looked stunned. First time I've been to a gig where they handed out earplugs on the way in. Can't really capture why it was so great, just there is no-one else who can make a sound like them. Going again on Monday and if I lived nearer London I would have gone tonight and Tuesday as well. There are tickets on Scarlet Mist if anyone is after one. |

Leonard Cohen last Saturday in Dublin, I ain't religious in any way but this was one of the most spiritual experiences I've ever had. I'm not the best with words so I'll pretty much leave it at that, I wouldn't do the gig an justice to try describing it.. |

C Gull, thanks for the review. Heard much the same from a friend in London. Have been listening to their albums and the Loveless EPs pretty much all week, they still sound miles ahead of an awful lot of stuff these days.. And to top it off I found out Spectrum will be supporting them on Sunday in Manchester, two of my very very favourite bands on the same bill, I'm still trying to appreciate how lucky I am to be seeing the both of them on the same night. This is turning out to be a summer of exceptional gigs for me. |

I went to Monsieur Cohen last Sunday night in Dublin also and like XY765 on Saturday night, I found the concert an oddly moving experience. Even the rain perversely added to the evening. We were happy to sit in it listening to Leonard for probably the last time. He even did a better version than Robert Forster's version of Tower of song ...!? "If it be your will that I speak no more. Let my voice be still, as it was before." (L. Cohen) |

Off to the Pitchfork Music Festival yet again this weekend (has it been a year?). I'm not working it - they decided against doing the festival podcast - but my friend who runs the show was kind enough to give me passes, VIP no less. Quite a pal. Some sets I'm looking forward to: PE doing "It Takes a Nation," The Hold Steady, Apples in Stereo, Les Savy Fav, Dino Jr, No Age, Spoon and my pals in the Occidental Brothers Dance Band International, a local African music group who are finally getting the exposure they deserve (they play often at my local bar). Should be a fun weekend, although it's supposed to be hotter than hell. Hopefully, the free water in the VIP area will hold the same appeal as the free beer. |

Rob, 'It Takes A Nation...' it's got to be worth it for that alone. Saw Morrissey, Beck & Siouxsie at Hyde Park the other week... drank too much vodka & Monster & completely screwed up my sleep pattern. But hey ho... Also I'm going to the Big Star/Robyn Hitchcock jig at Shepherds Bush Empire in just over a month. Should be good, power poppers!!! |

Jerry: You were right. Public Enemy was SO FREAKIN' GOOD Friday night. Especially after Mission of Burma doing "Vs." (kinda boring) and Sebadoh doing "Bubble and Scrape" (love the band, don't know the album), Public Enemy swept in like some kind of wrecking crew. Chuck D was relentless (GOD there's a lot of words in those tunes). Flav got booed for hyping his reality series but the revelation of the night is how essential he is to the whole makeup of the group and how talented a performer he is. Revelation of the night: One of the Shocklee brothers went ahead and switched the A and B sides of the record during mastering. Reason: They wanted the album to start with more bass. Oh, and PE played the whole show with a live band. I won't see a better live show all year. Except, and this is for Kev: The Hold Steady killed. Lots off "Stay Positive, strangely little off "Boys and Girls," but everyone seemed to know all the words and there was a guy standing next to me who smuggled in a bottle of Jameson, so all was right in the world. Coincidence of the day: my friend and I were driving home, we stopped at a light, and the Jameson guy was in the cab next to us. Today: Apples in Stereo, Dino Jr, Spoon and a girl I have a thing for meeting up with me in the afternoon. Like I said, all is right in the world. |

Day three of Pitchfork: Apples in Stereo were pure pop bliss, Bon Iver was quiet and lovely and got his ass handed to him by Dino Jr, who started up across the park about halfway through his set, Dino themselves sounded like they'd never left and Spoon was a nice, if slightly familiar, way to close the night. Generally liked the bits of Spiritualized and M Ward I heard, too. I managed to stay out until 2 am, so work's a bit kaleidoscopic. |

I haven't been going to shows lately at all. But a friend has a subscription to a concert series at the Hollywood Bowl that he renews every year. The Bowl is one of the things in Los Angeles that is genuinely terrific. I was his lucky guest last night to see Pacifika, Sharon Jones and Feist. Pacifika were a spare, quite pleasant Spanish-language female-fronted indie act. Just vocals, one excellent and restrained guitarist, a similarly excellent and restrained drummer and bass. Sharon Jones was entertaining but her act is a self-conscious 60s throwback--a big expensive soul revue. Her reinvention of "This Land is Your Land" was the highlight, with the runner-up peak being a good cover of "It's a Man's Man's World." Aside from these two numbers, good songs were in short supply. Feist, of course, was the point of the evening. This was my first real listen to her, as I'd only heard her "1,2,3" single (forgettable) and a YouTube live rendition of a cover of something linked from this Board. I remember liking that one quite a lot and this show was much more like that. She is an interesting and technically excellent singer and her ultra-smart use of cover material really impressed. There was a shadow artist doing the stage backgrounds. My host said that Bright Eyes did that recently too. I hope they're all getting the idea from Warhol's early VU presentations. It was a good show, probably with too wealthy--hence lazy--a crowd. |

I've got a very busy month of shows in August. Ed Kuepper in the tiny Vanguard in Newtown first, then Paul Weller in The Enmore, then Robert Forster two nights in a row in one of the cosier theatres of the Opera House. We're on the front table both nights and taking our six-year-old on the second night for her first ever proper concert. It'll be a surprise for her by the way, so no telling. |

I expect a full, rich, Collins-esque report on the R. Forster shows, Padraig. Especially since it seems Chicago's been shunned this time around. The rest of your concert schedule ain't too shabby, either. I've got Wire and MBV coming up, making for a pretty satisfying fall. |

Saw an angel last night: Emmylou Harris. A real beauty, a goddess, an icon, a helluva singer. Bonus pts. to her for dipping generously into early days back catalog. "Return of the Grievous Angel", "Together Again", "One of These Days", "Pancho and Lefty", and "If I Could Only Win Your Love", were just a few of the staggeringly great gems on display. And oh, of course, "Blue Kentucky Girl". The great bluegrass virtuouso, Ricky Skaggs, who was one of the openers (the other was Del McCoury), came out for a duet with Emmylou, as well. Her newer material, including a great cover of "Old Five and Dimers Like Me" was great, too. Lemme tell ya, the woman hasn't lost a step. She seems to have worked out some kind of reverse-time deal - she just keeps singing better and getting more beautiful. |

That does sound like a lurvely evening ETM...I only saw her once, about 8 years ago at the Bumbershoot Festival here in Seattle, when she was touring with Linda Ronstadt. And then later in the evening when we went to see the McGarrigles' big family show she and Linda turned up, and we were treated to those four voices plus Martha W. harmonizing on a string of numbers. Sheer bliss. |

Great review ETM! I saw her in concert here in Sydney a few years ago at the State Theatre and she was wonderful (and, yes, beutiful). The amazing Buddy Miller was part of her back-up band then. Is he still with her? |

No Buddy Miller, Mark, though she had an awesome and flashy band of six extremely talented multi-instrumentalists, most of whom harmonized with her - I guess that was in the ad for the band: "must harmonize while playing". The resident guitar gunslinger this time was a guy called Colin Linden who, apparently, can play the shit outta anything with strings. |

Saw Devo last night in Sydney. I waited 26 years for the opportunity! Boy, they looked old when they first came out, but as Mark Mothersbaugh tore the yellow radiation suits from his bandmembers, the years and paunch seemed to drop off too. They played all the great stuff from the first 4 albums and Peek-a-Boo. My only gripe was that they sold out of energy domes! If they come to a town near you, their show is still worth watching! |

Tom Waits, The Ratcellar, Dublin on Thursday Night. I don't know where to start! The venue, the Ratcellar, was perfect for the gig. A large blue and yellow striped circus tent in a field, surrounded by trees – even most of the food vending stalls were pretty traditional looking, it almost felt as if you could have been transported back in time to some travelling show in Depression-era bible-belt America. It wouldn't have been out of place to have seen a big old seen-better-days carousel there, paint flaking off its horses and poles. I could make a comment about the bearded lady collecting our tickets, but that would be unfair. The ticket/security people were very friendly and efficient, even if they were wearing standard issue security anoraks, not barkers' stripy jackets. And they were all clean-shaven, even the women! I met a good number of my friends from home there. It doesn't at all surprise me that they were there (they have excellent taste in music!) it was just a nice surprise that they were there the same night. One of the lads, who had been at the show on the Wednesday night, had emailed some of them, with a “guide to the ratcellar” list of hints and tips. He included such useful information as the fact that the bar shut at the start of the performance, and didn't re-open, so stock up if you want beer. And don't drink too much, as there's no interval, so you'll be pissed off if the bladder can't last the whole 2 ½ hours! As we stood about under the trees, waiting to be let into the tent, some loud banging could still be heard from inside, prompting one of the guys, Larry, to ask “what's he building in there?” He just couldn't resist, and the chorus of groans, were really saying “why didn't I think of it?”! Inside the venue didn't disappoint either. The change of use hadn't caused a loss of any of that circus-tent ambience. Thankfully though, it had lost it's old circus-tent smell (horse shit and candyfloss!). The stage set was amazing too. A wall of old tannoy siren/speakers (like the ones in 1930's prison movies, or in M.A.S.H. - think they're tannoy) were hung from the back of the stage, and a collection of what appeared to be old theatrical junk was strewn about the place – a lot of that “old junk” turned out to be useful props throughout the show – an old fight-bell, for instance. Dark red velvet curtains hung, giving the whole place the feel of an old forgotten theatre, long since closed, but someone had found a hole in a back door, and let us all in, for one last performance before the place would be torn down. OK, I've waffled on (and on) but I've still not said anything about Tom! When he finally came on stage (not late, it just felt like it, I was so impatient!) to deafening, foot stamping cheering, with a theatrical twist of the hand, operating our marionette strings, he had us on our feet for a standing ovation before he'd even spoken a word, never mind sang! He howled, spat, growled, moaned, grimaced, his way through an amazing set, which managed to cover just about the whole of his career – I've cheated and copied the setlist from someone else's blog page as I wouldn't have had a hope of remembering everything, and I was too engrossed to think about faffing about with a pen and paper! He stomped his feet, as percussion, the resulting clouds of dust added no end to the whole crumbling theatre ambience. His theatrical gesturing and posturing reminded me of some kind of macabre scarecrow hobo, caught somewhere between On The Road and Grapes Of Wrath, stopping off to pick up Woodie Guthrie, on their way to go drinking with Raymond Carver. At one point, even though I was completely enthralled, I couldn't help finding myself the tiniest bit scared! I thought I'd remember the banter, and the stories, but they've all become jumbled, except for his musings that if everyone in China simultaneously jumped from lots of high ladders, the result could cause Earth to go spinning off it's axis – A story which clearly sounds way better when told in a guttural voice, sitting at a piano... Actually, that piano didn't get as much use as I thought it might. I suppose the very title of the tour would be a hint that it would be that way. When he sat there though, it was gorgeous. We got House Where Nobody Lives and Innocent When You Dream, which was more haunting live than ever it has sounded on CD. I was very slightly disappointed when I heard he had played Tom Traubert's Blues the night before. At the same time, I'm sort of glad that he didn't play some of the others, and one or two in particular, if only for the fact that I would have bawled... There was very little yelling of requests from the audience – with the exception of a guy about 2 rows up from me who roared for Jersey Girl. A great song, but it would have been completely out of place with the rest of the set – about as appropriate as yelling “get your kit off” as the bride walked up the aisle... Hold On was the final encore of the night, and saw Tom off stage to a standing ovation, probably the twentieth of the night. Having got to the venue early, I was parked really nearby - an advantage getting there, but it meant it took close to 40 minutes to drive the mile out to the gates of Phoenix Park. "Hang on St Christopher" was the advice I received by text, which coincidentally I was doing! Had Frank's Wild Years along for company for the drive home... Lucinda Down in the hole Come on up the house The bottom of the world Jockey full of bourbon Chocolate Jesus Misery is the river of the world Picture in a frame Tango till they're sore Invitation to the blues House where nobody lives Innocent when you dream Lie to me Sixteen shells from a thirty-ought six 9th & Hennepin Black market baby Trampled rose Hoist that rag All the world is green Hang down your head Raindogs/Russian Dance Make it rain ---- Heart attack and vine November Hold on |

never have i seen such a grief-stricken crowd at a gig. i kind of went along half-heartedly, i make no secret of it that grant was always my #1. but as soon as i saw robert standing up there, looking and sounding as great as ever, my heart just started racing. and there i remained, expression and motionless for the whole thing. the mournfulness was palpable, but a very sweet set irrespectively. |

Thanks Joe for trying to describe the gig, have my ticket for RF in Dublin in mid September, hopefully i'll make is as we have our second little nippper due at the start of October so it may be a close call as our first was 8 weeks early... On the vein of RF's Evangelist, i played it a lot at the start but find it a 'difficult' record to play with all the GM references and the general feel of the record..maybe it's just me.. |

also i was at Tom Waits on the Wednesday night, the first of his three Dublin shows, sound a bit dodgy at the start but refer to Cateherine's description for a full report.... Also saw Daniel Johnson & Friends at Whelan's in Dublin a couple of weeks ago, very good but too short, that guy is a genius IMO.... |

also saw Spiritualized in Tripod in Dublin in June, that guy is always good live, i think their new record 'Songs in A&E' is great, more of the same but slightly different for Spiritualized if ya get what i mean. They're playing a gig in Kilkenny, Ireland in August and again in Vicar St, Dublin, mid-October, that one might be a bit tight to get to as my next kid is due a few weeks after the gig.. |

I saw Ed Kuepper play a great gig at The Vanguard in Newtown, Sydney last night. The venue was packed and I spent quite a while standing right in front of four people who were talking about inane stuff like what they were watching on TV. Why pay $25 for a gig to have a chat you can have anywhere else for free? He played two sets and in total was on stage for more than two hours. It didn't drag at any time though, and Ed was remarkably loquacious for a man who is generally thought of as just this side of morose. Some of what he said was pretty oblique though! With him was his regular band of Peter Oxley on bass and Jeffery Wegener on drums. They played several tracks from Ed's current record Jean Lee & The Yellow Dog (so one of my companions at the gig told me. I don't have that album yet. I'll be getting it now though). Highlights included Honey Steel's Gold, Everything I've Got Belongs To You and Messin' Part Two. They played several Laughing Clowns songs (including The Laughing Clowns). One of the Clowns' songs played had an amazing locked groove that almost sounded like Krautrock. Appropriate, I suppose, seeing as Ed was born in Bremen! That was probably my favourite moment of the night. I can't remember which song it was though! I took no notes. I bought a self-released live CD of Ed's there for $10. We got halfway through it in the car on the way back. It's very good. |

Saw Band of Horses at The Metro in Sydney last week. A terrific live band. Ben Bridwell has such a unique voice. Played a generous two hour set - including almost everthing off their two studio albums and a few promising sounding new songs. Quite a powerhouse on some songs with a three guitar attack. But also some nice steel guitar and acoustic stuff as well. Good sense of humour too. They played in Auckland the week before - and the keyboard player had his wallet stolen there. Cue lots of jokes about the 'sheep f**king kiwi' who ripped him off. |

One of these days I'll get to see Emmylou. She gets huge marks from me for keeping Gram's music alive, and her own remarkable song cycle is a big cherry on top. The best female country singer ever in my book. |

Today will be very special. I am going to see TV Personalities! Dan Treacy is back with his band in cologne playing a very special location the Gloria where I have seen the last Go-Bees concert ;((( Robert will play there in october as well! Haven't seen TVPs since the middle of the eighties! Wonder whether I will be able to get my original vinyls (first three albums and early 7"-es) signed by Dan?! |

What did you think of Paul Weller, Padraig? I thought the best bits were the light show and the Jam songs! The rest I found actually pretty boring...dare I say, like most of his solo output. |

The Moffs were part of that Sydney 60's psychedelic scene of the mid to late 80's - Died Pretty, The Moffs, Perth's Stems, Ups and Downs etc The Moffs were (early) Pink Floyd to The Church's Byrdsian tendancies. I'll send you a song and see what you think. I think they would be right up your alley Randy if you haven't heard them. I hope Weller reschedules Brisbane for you David so you can hear Eton Rifles in all it's glory live! He also strongly suggested on Thursday night that although he was enjoying it, it had been 20 years since he toured and he won't be back in another 20 years. |

Great review on your MySpace site Pádraig. I was at the gig the night before and was equally impressed. The setlist was a bit different - e.g. Speak Like a Child instead of Shout to the Top from the Style Council years. I enjoyed all the stuff from 22 Dreams. But of course the Jam songs were still the highlight for old fans like me - particularly Thats Entertainment which was quite transcendent. I'd never seen Weller before in any incarnation. Was surprised what a great showman he was - based on his interview persona I'd expected a bit of grumpy old man. But he was a thoroughly engaging performer. |

hi ya Randy. Not sure who's guitarist but the drummer is John Doyle, from the 3rd line up (Second hand onwards) it should be special. i think it got put back before due to devoto wanting to do lots of comeback gigs in a row and i think adamson only wanted one. that's what i remember anyhow. |

Weller's shows were rescheduled. I saw him Tues night. Nothing much to add to previous reviews, except to say it was an exceptional gig. This guy does soul rock really well. (Is that a genre?) Screamed along with Eton Rifles and he finished with Town Like Malice. Wow seen Ian Brown and Paul Weller in the last 4 months! Best show? Robert Forster! |

Ornette Coleman headlining the Chicago Jazz Fest. What a lovely experience. Sitting in Grant Park at dusk, the Chicago skyline providing some pre-performance eye candy, a few friends and a lot of wine. Inexplicably, the organizers gave the green light to a five-ad loop that ran continuously between sets on the park's projection screen and never varied. By the time Ornette took the stage, the crowd had firmly turned against the advertisers, going so far as to boo when an all-too-familiar ad popped up onscreen yet again. But Ornette's appearance banished the bad taste immediately. He was simply tremendous - drummer (his son), electric and acoustic bass simultaneously, and him on alto sax and even violin at one point (turns out he plays it a lot like he plays the sax). As is often the case with jazz tunes, I couldn't tell you the names of the compositions he played but I recognized more than a few of them. He even did a couple Prime Time-esque, funk workouts. Not surprisingly, a good number of people left during his performance, probably because they'd been at the fest all day, wanted to see what all the Ornette talk was about, and got their fill after four or five tunes. But those who stayed - still quite a large crowd but not suffocating - were treated to a magnificent performance. Unfortunately, for some reason the nightly fireworks at Navy Pier went on as scheduled (WTF?), so Ornette's last two numbers enjoyed the not-entirely-inappropriate accompaniment of explosives just a mile or so to the east. I'm sure it wasn't as noticeable to folks in the bandshell, but for us on the lawn it was quite an annoyance. And this is The City That Works? Then, when Ornette finished, we witnessed the return of the ad loop. We packed quickly and retreated. So the score? Ornette: A; City of Chicago: C-. |

I went to see Bon Iver last night in Manchester. It was supposed to be at the Academy 3 in Manchester, but due to high demand was moved to my worst Manchester venue - the Academy 2. I always find it difficult to get a decent view (being quite small), this was made even worse last night by a band who played sitting down....errrm cheers! On to the music, they've only got the one album out so songs are a little limited so (I think) the full album got an outing (plus a cover version), and it was all over in an hour. I have to say I enjoyed it, and they played really well, got the crowd involved and well worth £10. Robert Forster in Manchester on Sunday! Cheers Jon |

Robert Forster last night, don't want to talk too much about it, as it's well covered in the GB's section. I will say he played for 2 and a bit hours, excluding a 10 minute interval. An excellent set of GB's & Solo stuff, I've a rubbish memory so I won't try listing things. Up and coming The Ting Tings and The Charlatans in the next couple of weeks. Cheers Jon |

Joe I'm looking forward to The Charlatans, its a fair while since I last went to see them, it might have been the 'hits' tour. New Order are one of my favourate bands of all time, so anyone who takes their influence can't be too bad. A bit off topic - New Order's expanded re-issues are out next Monday (in the UK), well worth an investment. Cheers Jon |

Hey Joe (see what I did there with New Order) The 1st five albums are getting re-issued, with a bonus CD. To be honest, I don't think its that much of a bonus for obsessive fans as they'll have most of the stuff anyway. A couple of expanded mixes, remixes and so on. Don't know if this will come out as a link, but neworderonline has the tracklisting. http://www.neworderonline.com/News/News. aspx?NewsID=1390 If I was you I'd much rather not see The Charlatans and live in Australia than the other way round!! Technique is an absolute beauty! New Order made their 12"ers essential by the quality of the extended mixes/remixes. Really up to that point they were untouchable. Over the last month I've done the small gig, medium gig, huge gig. R.E.M. at Twickenham Bunnymen at RAH playing Ocean Rain with orchestra + greatest hits set. & Big Star at Shepherds Bush Empire. |

Yeah Big Star were good. The Bunnymen were exceptional. It's a well loved LP so they were truly preaching to the converted. Joe, it wasn't linked to ATP. Something of a 25th anniversary for the original Albert Hall shows, loosely tying in Ocean Rain as being an album-in-production at the time. |

I went to see The Ting Tings in Manchester on Thursday. I wasn't really expecting too much, and to be fair they surpassed my initial expectation. It was at the Academy (recently refurbished as great expense..shouldn't really have bothered). They played for just under an hour, only having one album, and they were off stage just after 10. I could get used to that! There's only two of them, and I'm not sure how much was 'live' and how much was tapes. All in all a decent night out....oh and Everton got knocked out of Europe, so a decent night becomes a good night! Cheers Jon |

Jonathan, though I've been a Liverpool fan since 1974, I've never particularly disliked Everton. In the last 12 years I've actually always wished them well (except when playing Liverpool). This change came about because one of my best mates is from Liverpool and is a huge Everton fan. Another friend from Dublin is also an Everton fan. |

Padraig, don't get me wrong its not like with United!! I think the feelings changed from Everton fans following Heysel, and the chants of 'murderers' kind of changes your opinion of people. Not saying Liverpool fans are perfect (certainly not at Old Trafford, and that makes me sick as well). The main reason for wanting them out this time relates to the jip they gave after we struggled to beat Standard in the qualifiers. Standard probably should have gone through over the 2 legs, and I wish them all the best in the UEFA Cup. Back to the subject - The Charlatans tonight in Warrington. Cheers Jon |

Went to see Los Campesinos! in Liverpool last night. They played for just under an hour, playing lots of their debut album, and a sprinkling off the forthcoming 2nd album. An interesting group, bit indie, a bit twee, a bit shouty and very studenty. No problems then! An early dart as well, back for the Endland highlights. Cheers Jon |

I've been remiss in posting about a couple shows I've seen recently. So: My Bloody Valentine: I don't think I need to say much about this. It was impossibly loud - and impossibly good. They did absolutely nothing new, and it didn't matter. Mostly "Loveless," a few older tunes, and a finale that devolved (or evolved) into a 20-minute noise explosion that ressembled nothing so much as a jet taking off. They handed out ear plugs at the door, which I used to no avail. My hearing was seriously messed up for two days. Rock and roll. Wire: Saw them this past Saturday on the last night of their American tour. I was a bit worried about this one, since I don't know Wire's entire catalog, and I know they're not ones for a nostalgia trip (no end-to-end recreation of "Pink Flag" was in store). Didn't matter - the tunes I didn't know sounded as great as the ones I did (which I barely recognized since many had been entirely transformed). Some off the early records, some from "Send" and "Object 47," some from in between. Wire's never had much audience in the States - even by the standards of, say, the Gang of Four - so the place wasn't packed. But the folks who were there were treated to a hell of a performance by a great band, sloppy at times but powerful, nimble and cathartic. I shouldn't be surprised I liked it as well as I did, but I am. Great stuff. |

Andreas, sounds a bit of a bargain at 35 Euros. On Tuesday I went to see Vampire Weekend in Manchester at the Academy. It was a decent night, they played a couple of new songs (off an up coming album?) a Fleetwood Mac cover and all of the 1st album (if memory serves). It came at just over an hour, and was a little samey, but not bad as a whole. Another highlight of the night being not getting caught in the United / Celtic traffic. Next up is Noah & The Whale and The Fleet Foxes. Cheers Jon |

Skulldisco - I'm off to see Magazine in Manchester (1st date - Saturday I think). I went to see Noah & The Whale at Manchester Academy 3 a couple of nights back. It was better than I expected to be honest. All the 1st album, an 'interesting' cover of Girlfriend in a coma, and one or two new tracks. Only time will tell if 5 years time will be an albatross for them (not in a Fleetwood Mac way). Nothing for a wekk or so and then Fleet Foxes, once again in Manchester. Cheers Jon |

Are you looking for something cheap/expensive? central location/out of town? etc. The venue (The Academy) is on Oxford Road and its postcode is M13 9PR if that helps sorting something out. I'm sure there are better people to ask than me, just have a check on the internet. if you get stuck let me know and I'll have a bit of a search around for you. Cheers Jon |
